My all time favourite Strindberg! Walking the streets of Stockholm can never be the same again once this novel gets under your skin. The pubs, the parks, the cold wind, the meaningless dialogues, everything reminds you of the restless soul whose inconvenient and politically incorrect quotes now decorate Drottninggatan, The Queen's Road. The Queen of Stockholm today: shopping! Strindberg would have had something to say about the cheap commercialism that defines the street where his museum is to b ...more

description

(Berns Salonger, Stockholm 1887)

The world is so full of lies, that nobody will believe a man when he speaks the truth.

The Red Room is a scathing satire of Stockholm society set in the 19th Century, which can just as well be transposed to any society anywhere. It was first published in 1879 and is often referred to as the first modern Swedish novel. Strindberg wrote it between February and November 1879, when he was in great debt and after going into personal bankruptcy. Although The Red Room ini

Opening lines:
It was an evening in the beginning of May. The little garden on "Moses Height," on the south side of the town had not yet been thrown open to the public, and the flower-beds were still unturned. The snowdrops had worked through the accumulations of last year's dead leaves, and were on the point of closing their short career and making room for the crocuses which had found shelter under a barren pear tree; the elder

I went on a tear on 2007 and read all of Henrik Ibsen and all of August Strindberg. Before I could get to all of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, I had to turn back to writing, and I can't read while I write. Strindberg is wonderful. A bit more sarcastic than Ibsen and less tragedic. But both are great.
Though I'm not a big fan of Peer Gynt. Strindberg's parody of Peer Gynt, Lucky Per's Journey is a hoot. If you ever have a chance to see it performed, definitely go.

I haven't reviewed individual plays.

The Dickens influence is inarguable. Oh wait. I can't say I'm a big fan of Dickens, what with his superficial plots and Victorian humor. Strindberg tries the same techniques, and I suppose I would have gotten a bit more of the satire if I'd lived in 19th Century Sweden. Yeah, this books didn't do anything for me. I haven't read/seen any of Strindberg's plays, so I can't make comparisons. But the Red Room, supposedly Sweden's first modern novel, bored me to tears.

Regarded as the first modern Swedish novel, and indeed Strindberg's first, it is rather episodic book, with scenes rather than having a strong narrative arc (but then Strindberg was first and foremost, a playwright). It centres around Arund Falk, who wishes to become a journalist and the varied assortment of people he meets. Not many of which, it has to be said, are particularly likeable. There is a sense of sympathy for the poorer sections of society but overall the vision is a pessimistic and ...more

Underbar bok.

There are some amusing satires, especially about the Swedish civil service, which is portrayed as a vast scam organised for the benefit of the bureaucrats, who either do nothing or spend time engaged in useless and trivial employment of no use whatsoever to the people or government they are supposed to serve. This, of course, reads like an English Tory's parody of what all taxpayer-funded bureaucracies look like now, and especially Scandinavian ones, so that we can read Strindberg and say "Ha! I ...more

Salonul rosu de August Strindberg, aparitie in limba romana in cadrul Colectiei de buzunar a colaborarii editoriale Litera-Jurnalul national, Bucuresti, 2010, in traducerea lui Corneliu Papadopol, este un roman de seama al secolului al XIX-lea si nu numai ce ofera o placuta delectare intelectuala a tonului sarcastic cu care in maniera existentialista este prezentata lumea schimbarilor sociale, ajunsa in plina expansiune de la o parte a Europei inspre o alt

This novel features much navel-gazing by earnest artists trying to lead "authentic" lives. I wasn't entirely sure whether Strindberg identified with them or was laughing at them.

The Red Room is a strong social commentary of Sweden in the 1870's that was remarkable in its foreshadowing of Sweden in the 20th century. It was also remarkable in its depiction of the Bohemian nihilism in Sweden that was likewise present throughout Europe. A few quotations that I liked were:

1. Genius is the infinite capacity for taking pains.

2. In the world outside nations are bellowing with fury against oppression, but in Sweden all we do is to celebrate jubilees.

3. All [political] parties ha

Podjeća me na Branislava Nušića.

; ...more

Over the past few years I've been reading all of Strindberg. It's slow going because: 1) you have to find it translated into English; 2) you have to find an existing copy; and 3) usually that existing copy has to come from some interlibrary loan system and takes time. Then you get the play and it's the usual chewing over childhood trauma, mother blame and misogyny. He made a real mishmash of his marriages, as well. Who will read you in 200 years? Who can say. Strindberg's name pops up within the ...more

This may not be the exact version I read in English or Deutsch but it's close enough.

Probably my only entry at goodreads for Strindberg as the rest of what I read by this author just, as this, didn't do anything for me.

This may have been an early or groundbreaking writing about gatherings of people discussing things in way not previously written about yet it never spoke to me. These disenchanted and rebelliously portrayed provocateur wannabee's just seem to complacent.

A collection of young men in Stockholm, struggling artists, writers and actors who know each other. The main character Falk is a guy you feel sympathy for, but he seems a little too trusting both in friends and family.

Johan August Strindberg was a Swedish writer, playwright, and painter. Along with Henrik Ibsen, Søren Kierkegaard, Selma Lagerlöf and Hans Christian Andersen he is arguably the most influential and famous of all Scandinavian authors. Strindberg is known as one of the fathers of modern theatre. His work falls into two major literary movements, Naturalism and Expressionism. He is widely read in Swed ...more
