Changeless (Parasol Protectorate #2)
by
Gail Carriger (Goodreads Author),
Emily Gray
Gail Carriger created a fascinating steampunk vision of Victorian England in her “intoxicatingly witty” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) debut novel Soulless—the first in the best-selling Parasol Protectorate series. Changeless is the second in the series and finds Alexia Tarabotti, now the Lady Woolsey, quite put out after her werewolf husband goes missing. So, armed w...more

Ahhhhhhhh...this was just what I needed. After suffering a cerebral edema brought on by “big idea” overload from reading Macrolife: A Mobile Utopia (review to come), this breezy, charming comfort read was the perfect curative to alleviate the swelling in my brain pan.

*Originally read 9/13/10 - 9/15/10*
*This is actually a 2 1/2 star book for me*
I really can't believe how disappointing I found this book. I thought the first book, Soulless, was so fun and fresh! I'm quite amazed that this one tanked so spectacularly for me.
A lot of the things that drew me into the first book were missing here. I was actually pretty bored throughout most of it. It felt incredibly tedious and drawn out. Now, the voice is still the same - which is a huge plus for me. Alexia is a...more

sure, i like candy. what's not to like? it's a sweet, brightly-hued thing to eat. but candy is not guilt-free. it is not substantial. it's not even the best dessert item out there. now chocolate, that's a dessert. chocolate can be sexy, right? when it's hot, chocolatey things get messy. on the other hand, candy is not really very sexy. it's cute - but it's too instantly disposable to be sexy. candy is for kids. now ice cream - that's a great dessert. i can spend some time with it. it is a more n...more

Need. Blameless. NOW.
Full review:
This book was one of my most eagerly awaited books of 2010, and with good reason. When I read Soulless, Alexia Tarabotti quickly climbed pretty damn near the top of the heap of my favorite characters. I was in love, a smitten kitten. But Gail Carriger didn't stop there, because she gave me Lord Akeldama and Lord Maccon, Professor Lyall and Ivy Hisselpenny. And Biffy! Spiffy Biffy, I adore you, too. Could it get any better?

Alexia Tarabotti, is awoken by her irate werewolf husband, who promptly dissappears, and leaves her with an encampment of soldiers and werewolves on the front lawn, and instructions to visit a certain hat-shop. At the hat shop she makes the aquantence of Madame LeFoux, a fascinating suit-wearing mechanical genius, and gains a new parasol. Then when Alexia finds out about the problem of whole areas where vampires and werewolves are entirely losing their supernatural abilities.. and that this area...more
While not quite as good as Soulless, Changeless was a delightful read and exactly what I needed to cleanse my brain after reading American Psycho. Gail Carriger writes good, funny yarns. There is a definite amount of repetition, but it can be forgiven. I can't bring myself to say that her stories and characters are original, but there is a certain freshness to her stories. Perhaps it is the way her points of view are written or the very, very mild inclusion of a few steampunk elements. Regardles...more

I'm so upset right now, I just want to cry for Alexia. Because for goodness' sake, the poor woman has no soul! She can't cry for herself!!!
Alright, I'm not going to be all spoilery. I'm just going to say what others have already--there is a cliffhanger with this one, so make sure you've got Blameless on hand before reading it. Also, don't read the Blameless blurb BEFORE reading Changeless. I was given this sage advice by my wonderful Goodreads friends, and it was good advice indeed.
Now--as for C...more
This book is a little flat compared to the first book in the series - it seems second books in trilogies often are - but still is well worth reading. Alexia, now married, is faced with a power that is besetting London - one that seems to be able to strip supernatural beings of their power.
Sounds quite familiar. But there is just one problem. Its not her.

Dare I say, better than the first? I do have to give fair warning that the end will make you wish it was September already and you had Blameless in your hands. But, can you really consider that a bad thing? I also have to confess that I actually woke up in the middle of the night and my first thought was of Alexia; poor poor Alexia. The ending is heartwrenching to say the least, it just made me so sad and I can't imagine how things are going to work out. But they have to work out, right? Right?!...more

I must admit I thought book 1 was good but that's about it. On the other hand, book 2 was AMAZING, loved every page of it! It took me a while to get into the book because the topic is so very different from everything else, but once I did I could not put it down.
I'll explain a bit for those who have not read it yet. We have this amazing soulless Italian heroine who is very practical and efficient, then we have her super sexy alpha werewolf of a husband. Both of them make such a gr...more

What an ending! I confess, I've been craving for something bittersweet but this just tore my heart and broke it to pieces! Worse, I don't have the next volume. How shall I endure not knowing what will happen next?!
This volume didn't made me laugh so much as the previous one, but the mystery to what was sucking the supernatural powers out of, well, the supernatural creatures kept me turning the pages. We also get to know a bit more about the supernatural and the preternatural.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series "Soulless" I thought that it was original and fun. I was really looking forward to the second book. The beginning started off okay but somewhere towards the middle of the story it got lost and never really found its way back. The plot really didn't make a lot of sense and it left me scratching my head. It wasn't until the end that I was really gripped by the novel. I definitely want to read the next book because it eagerly left me wanting more. This...more

I'm not, I'm afraid, a huge fan of steampunk. It's not that I mind it, so much. I find some of the ideas quite intiguing. I like steampunk drawings and artwork, I used to enjoy Jules Verne as an adolescent and Brazil is one of my favourite films of all time. It just doesn't rock my world, I suppose. Or, to put it another way, it's not of itself enough to have some dirigibles and goggles to make a book for me.
I am also beginning to get slightly fed up with vampires and werewolves. Pure oversatura...more
Jiminiy Crickets! I finally finished this book. It took me forever. I started it in late 2010 when Blameless came out because I kept hearing about a terrible, horrible, cliffhangery ending. I hate waiting for the subsequent book to come out after a cliffhanger. Well I needn't have worried. This book seemed to drag endlessly for me, I kept picking it up and putting it down. In the meantime, not only did Blameless come out but so did books 4 and 5, Heartless and Timeless.

I’ve just finished a book where I didn’t want to read too fast, but couldn’t stop myself even if I wanted to. There are not many books I can think of that have engaged all my senses, where I’m wrapped up in the story and overall love and hard work put into the words, where I was utterly lost in the world the author has created.

What a fabulous book! The mystery here was fantastic... although I had an idea of who the spy was Ms. Carriger still had me guessing at who it could be. The possibilities were endless.
I guess I had a different picture of what this book would be like. I was under the impression that Lord Maccon wasn't in the book all that much but I thought it was the perfect amount. His background story was great, although I think he and Alexia need to fine tune their communication skills.

In the words of Ivy Hisselpenny "Woe is me" there's a HUGE cliffhanger ending. Gasp. Flail.
Despite being left hanging, I really enjoyed Changeless. The plot was very entertaining. Ms Carriger’s true to period (or rather alt period) story telling was spot on.
I continue to enjoy Ms Carriger’s progressive characters that never disappoint when it comes to originality and authenticity.

First off let me just say that I hated how this ended!! There is a reason I read romance, I like the happy ending! I do enjoy this type of series, but man, don't end a book like this!!

In Changless, Alexia Maccon has adjusted to seeing the odd and unusual, and not just because she was born without a soul. Now married to the werewolf Lord Maccon, she's used to seeing naked men and wolves roaming about the grounds. However, when a crisis hits Queen Victoria's London, she's as baffled as the rest: all supernatural powers within a certain radius turned off. Werewolves were stuck in human form, vampires became mortal, and the local ghosts were permanently exorcised. When Lord Macco...more

It's not technically a spoiler if I warn readers that this ends on a cliffhanger, is it? Frankly, that's something I want to know.
I do like this series, but I prefer my books wrapped up and finished when I hit the next page. Manga and graphic novels at least have the courtesy to say "Vol. 2 of 5." Book series should be so gracious.

Ms. Carriger writes steampunk urbane fantasy comedies of manners to cope with being raised in obscurity by an expatriate Brit and an incurable curmudgeon. She escaped small town life and inadvertently acquired several degrees in Higher Learning. She then traveled the historic cities of Europe, subsisting entirely on biscuits secreted in her handbag.
