This has to be the worst thing I've ever read in my entire life, I swear. I'm sorry, I'm sure there are a lot of fans out there, but this book was just fucked up and most of all: Boring. Oh-so-BORING.

My god. The sex wasn't even hot, there was no seduction, nothing. "I took off my clothes. And then he fucked me. My god. The sex wasn't even hot, there was no seduction, nothing. "I took off my clothes. And then he fucked me. And I came. And then he came. And he drank my blood. And then I drank his blood. And then I turn into a virgin again. And then the next day, I took off my clothes. And we fucked." Or: "He slid his hands down my pants and by the time the car stopped I'd had 3 orgasms."

Wow geez, I can barely keep myself in check from all the hotness, be still my loins! That's what this books is like, chapter, after chapter, after chapter. -yawns loudly-

The thing that bothered me the most wasn't the BDSM, or the fisting, or the knives and the blood, it was the fact that 'drinking Christian's blood turned her into a virgin again'. Now I know what they mean, cause a girl's first time usually hurts, and that's what he's aiming for because she bleeds every time, but it's not like being a virgin is something you can go back to once you've had sex for the first time. Unless if the author thinks there really is such a thing as a hymen that's some kind of closed membrane that 'breaks' when a girl's cherry gets popped. I'm sorry but this has to be the silliest thing I've ever read.

ETA: apparently, I am completely wrong about hymens in general and they felt the need to set me straight. It is in fact, a closed membrane, I'm told. I just feel so bad for all the virgins out there who have monthly nose bleeds when they're on their period. I mean, where else would the stuff go? My biggest sympathies to all you young nose bleeders out there. -sniffle-

On top of the fact that they had the most boring sex life in literary history (and I'm using this term loosely), he tells her he doesn't love her, but then about 5 minutes later, he does. But she shouldn't love him back! No! I'll wipe your memory, fair Juliette, and set you back into the real world! No Christian, don't, me lubs you so much, please, hurt me some more!

But he does dump her. (and I'm glad he did cause that meant the book finally ends) And it works for like 5 seconds, so she gets her memory back, tries to kill herself and, of course; he comes to her rescue and turns her into a vampire. I think this paragraph alone is longer than the chapter where all those events took place.

There are really no words. As Erin said in her review, what is contained in this book falls under my "hard limits". The way things turned around in the ending was not enough to soften the blow. This was not for me.

I can't begin to express how much I enjoy the amazingly dark and complex stories from Kitty Thomas. At times I have even questioned if it is alright for me to enjoy them so much because they can be so dark and disturbing. Okay, so I had to give myself some time to think about this story before I wrote a review, because parts just didn't sit well with me. I'm a huge fan of dark erotica stories, but certain aspects of Last Girl were too much.

Well, I'm becoming a Kitty Thomas's huge fan!!!

This is a vampire dark erotica book with not so light BDSM scenes, and there are very disturbing ones, specially with knife play. It isn't for everyone, but really I loved it!!!

Can I just say this book is very mature.
It took me completely by surprise and the author had me eating out of her hand by the end.
Wow. Just WOW. I don't know what happened.
One minuet I was reading about a teen in college helping out her mom. The next she had been abducted by a very sexy and intimidating god of a vampire who was using her for sex and for a bite every now and then.
So well written and the ending was everything one could hope for.

Ok, so, as you guys might have noticed, I'm a really big fan of power play reads. Well, I mean, not just reads but we're talking books here, lol. So when the opportunity presents itself for me to read some power play, I'm all in. Go into reading this review, or the short novel itself with the clear notion this is something I've read something like mountains on, and what I consider light may be sort of hardcore to some of you. This title is adult reading, and addressed to power play fans.

Short version of my review is, I had a total blast reading this. There were some parts that weren't exactly my kinks, so to speak, on which I will of course say nothing so I won't spoil your read in any way. I hate giving off spoilers. But I will mention that if you haven't read anything about the dynamics of power play relationships, or more like lifestyle and not play (there's a difference there, ask me if you're curious, lol), this read might not be the one to start off with. I have no idea what you should start off with, but this is pretty intense reading in some places.

The plot was sort of awesome, I loved the story through and through. This is not a hit and run sort of affair, Christian and Juliette get to know each other at some point, and then the affair happens years later. There's this cool build up because of that, this isn't instalove or instapassion or whatever. I really loved that. The whole story developed quickly once they got together, but it didn't feel rushed because they weren't stranger s bumping into each other. This aspect of the chemistry between the main characters is a make or break sort of thing for me in these reads. I have to believe there's a strong connection there, that there's this insane longing, this savage desire to own this person, to own every one of their breaths if it's possible. obsession and absolute possessiveness are natural parts of such a scenario, and they're key elements to making the story feel believable to me. I had that here, though as a personal note I would have loved this whole thing to have been explored more in depth, for the dynamics of the couple to happen a notch slower. Yes, that would mean mountains more of tension, which is, by large, my favorite part of things. Tension, insane intensity can't be reached without mountains of it. And it's intensity that I love in everything, reads, stories, characters, you name it.

The characters were interesting, but I wouldn't say I was completely a fan of either of them. I tend to be the fan of the alpha in any story, and I particularly love the master in a story. Maybe we'll talk about some of my favorite reads ever sometime, I'm a big fan of the master/pet sort of thing. Ranting, sorry. As I was saying, the characters here didn't make a fan out of me though I was very with everything going on. Though on their own they didn't completely charm me, as a pair they had awesome chemistry, and I particularly liked the way their relationship developed.

The writing style was a bit different from my usual, it's a present tense narrative. It's a bit edgier by large compared to a past tense narrative, and in a story like this one that's going to make more then a bit of difference. The present tense had me totally on the edge of my seat, things felt tenser. I think it had a really positive effect on the read overall, though I would have loved this just as much with a past tense, don't get me wrong. Another thing that I love is we have a constant POV and it's Juliette's. It's a good point of view for my personal tastes, though it's certainly fun to read stories from the other POV as well. I think you've noticed I tend to lean more in favor of first person narratives, and this is a first person.
Vivid writing, all the fun things were in there without becoming completely overwhelming (for me, you might feel differently though).

All in all I'd say this was a great lot of fun to read, intense but not overwhelming. Give it a try, I had fun with it.

Read for Dark Mind Book Tours, i didn't know what to expect with The Last Girl. I hadn't read any of Kitty's books before, but noticed a lot of comments about her work being very dark and more than capable of messing with your mind. Like all KT's it's definitely disturbing, but this book had a few funny moments for me.

A lot of the things that go on in Juliette's inner dialogue got to be so redundant that I didn't feel like she was much of person to start with. I -- it seems weird to say that I like reading about Stockholm Syndrome because that makes me sound really fucked up. I find instances of women falling in love with their captors interesting in the way that I don't understand it but would like to see how it works. I think that the world within a story exists to vicariously experience the inner workings of almost anyone's mind; victims, predators and bystanders all alike. When I read this story I felt as if that wasn't accomplished because the means to get there weren't really fulfilled.

Christian, who is supposed to be this incredibly powerful and deviant person felt to me to be in a lot of ways full of talk. Sort of like when you hear from your mom that if you don't behave you are leaving the store but really she means I am a threat in your mind but not in reality. The sex club seemed rather kind in a lot of ways, the music hypnotizes you so you are more turned on so she is more uninhibited... I know that's not really the pain he promised her. And he only really actualizes his threats once. And the word debasement is used a few times but in my opinion other than a few times he calls her slut, he treats her sort of like a princess. As for the whole he is forcing her... unfounded, as she repeatedly goes on and on about how much she is willing to do what he wants.

I was unimpressed by the story and I felt that the best part of it was the cover. (less)

I have been looking forward to reading The Last Girl it has had lots of good reviews and after reading Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas, which although was disturbing I really enjoyed, I thought I knew what to expect. But I was wrong. I didn't like this.

"The Last Girl" is simply a story about a vampire (Christian) who comes to claim a young girl (Juliette) years after their first encounter; one in which he burglarized her home. I don't want to spoil to much, but the story quickly evolves into one of dominance and submission. Christian makes it clear she will only be around for a short time to suit his needs, and well since Juliette IS human it probably won't be a good resolution. What follows is predictable at best. We learn it might not be too easy to let Juliette go once he's through with her. Juliette's feelings change, and well...I didn't expect the last arc of the novella to surprise me...but it did.

I suppose there is a dangerous sort of seduction in the forbidden, especially in the type of story Ms. Thomas has written in "The Last Girl." Again, I have to emphasize if you are going to read this be read to be thrown some very intense scenes and moments. It is not a typical "erotica," because the crux of the story isn't just the sex. It's in the seesaw nature of these two in a very dysfunctional relationship of sorts.

I remember finishing the book, and feeling something sad, and curious about them. What will they do? Where will they go? I wanted more resolution, although I doubt Ms.Thomas will go there for now. I haven't read anything that suggests she'll be writing more about these two.

What drew my attention was the vampire storyline. I wanted something intense and different from the typical vampire protagonist in the speculative/horror genre. And boy did I get it, and maybe that's why I wasn't initially so harsh.

I still have very mixed feelings about this story, some parts I gravitated to more than others. Still, regardless, the story has stayed with me long after I read it because Christian and Juliette are not quite like main characters I've read in this genre. Ms. Thomas pushes the envelope far enough for you to want to peek at what's over the edge.

So for piquing my curiosity, delivering the sort of twisted vampire love story I wanted to explore I give it 3 stars. (less)

I really like Kitty Thomas, she's an edgy writer who pushes buttons. I just finished reading this book and I was left feeling ... nothing. The concept was good, the writing was good, it really had all the qualities of what should have been a good book. But it just lacked ... something. Vampires interest me but for the most part it is all pulp fiction. Kitty Thomas' book was pretty much what I would consider the perfect vampire novel. Things I had always considered logical were addressed - like making sure your blood source was pure. Mostly I felt there was a real sense of fear between them even when they were inevitably bonded so closely, Christian came across as lacking humanity - which is just how it should be. Faced with what Juliette was faced with it would be stupid not to be scared all the time.

There were things that grated a bit - towards the end Christian had some out of character wimpy moments. It seemed just too neat that she was 101 (plus that resonated with the British Radio programme Room 101) and I couldn't help wondering if he carried the urns and pedestals with him every time he moved. However the visual was powerful.

If I am am honest I would have preferred a different ending; either that he did kill her eventually or that he let her go. The actual ending probably satisfied more people though and was written well enough that it didn't come across as trite.

Maybe the Club bit was a bit OTT but the knifing in the dungeon was clever and creepy. The whole growing back of the hymen thing seemed very in keeping with this mindset. (whether it is an actual barrier or not there is something physical (even just tightness) which caused her pain the first time and this was reinstated continually)

All in all a very dark vampire story with erotic overtones, well realised.(less)

No idea why I actually bought it in the end, the 1 star reviews are really not in favor for this book.

But I finished it in one read and the only thing I can complain about is:

I might have a different understanding from this book than Kim, but there was seduction, none stop. But this kind of seduction happened in her mind, there was no long foreplay (thanks God), there was no preparing for it. Why should it be? This is dark erotica.
This book is not about 20 pages long fore play, this book is more what is going on in her mind. The struggle with her feelings and her needs.
If you want to read how someone is sucking on someones nipples for 10 pages and then sucking on the other nipple for another 10 pages, this book is really nothing for you.

The fisting scene felt for me out of place, but it is a sex scene (or should be). This book does not need detailed sex.
I had the feeling I was there, I was able to follow her feelings and her thoughts. And it is not pages of pages of thoughts, things happen actually. I really love this kind of book, some books have only action and no thoughts in it and other books have so many thoughts that you forget what actually happens.

I don't recommend this book for most readers, because again this book is not happy D/S relationship sex, if you want that, read Shadowlands or something like that.
This is dark, this is not supposed to feel right. She is getting raped, she is getting hurt and it is supposed to be like that. And the ending can be seen as a happy ending or not so happy ending. He told her what happened to others like her and he tells her "welcome to hell". I'd love to know what he will do to her now.

My first book from Mrs. Thomas and certainly not the last one.(less)

To me it would make more sense for vampires to be dark beings. They live forever and probably within the first 100 years have had a taste of every decadence and pleasure available, only to take the next 100 years and explore what not only can be stretched, but also can be improved. Such is the case with Christian, our not so virtuous hero. He found Juliette at a rather young age and remained fascinated with her throughout her growth into womanhood. Six years is a drop in the bucket to a vampire but the patience is quite another thing altogether. It was a six year torture for the man himself of waiting for the right time to strike. For even though he knew he would eventually destroy her, the temptation she presented pushes aside all residual human emotions with the exception of possessiveness. But could he save her? Or would she become just another on his list and in his locked room?

As much as Christian tries to put distance between the two of them, he can't help the emotions rising up inside of him. He knew it was pointless to fight his nature, so he had to plan around it. Could he give her up in order to save her life?

Juliette has known Christian wasn't finished with her since the first day she met him. She knew somewhere in the back of her mind that he would be back, she was just never sure when. It was almost a relief when he finally claimed her. She just never fully fathomed what being in his world really entailed. The dark parts of her soul rejoiced at finally being with him, because only he held the keys to her most intimate fantasies. And those fantasies, were wrapped up in leather and chains.

This was, in my mind, a more accurate portrayal of these beings if they did roam the earth. The most deadly of predators with a taste for fear and pain. Playing with their food before the sampled and indulging in all forms of decadence. The question will always remain on how much of their humanity the would retain. I think the answer lies in the being itself! Great read!!

Shelves: read-in-2012, fucked-up-relationships

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Kitty Thomas from my Goodreads friends, so when I came across this book, the beautiful cover and the high ratings finally convinced me to give her a go.

So I read it. And the problem is…I’m really kind of stuck for words. This is not usually the kind of book I read and I was quite shocked with the characters, their thoughts, and their actions.

Simply put…I thought it was kind of fucked up.

I have to say this book was a shock to read, never have I been more torn about the male lead in a book or the nature of the relationship. This one cut deep. I'll read it again once I stop having nightmares!

I am a HUGE fan of Kitty Thomas, so any book of hers goes on my inner TBR list automatically (note: I am so behind on listing my GR read and TBR it's not funny). That said, the cover alone hooked me. Back into the Vampire world,
thought it would take me awhile but i'm really glad i did with this book.

Tiny complaint that i'm sure a lot of people will notice beginning to read this--It's hard to be original with all the vampire fiction that has been shoved in our faces so although i cringed a tiny bit toward the use/blend of familiarities from other vampire fiction And bdsm, it was still original in many aspects and plus you can't ignore KT's lyrical voice...so worth it.
