Like a Wolf with a Bone by Shelly Laurenston- 4 flames

This was Eggie and Darla Mae’s story and I loved it. I’m not sure what I expected from Eggie, but I really enjoyed it. This story was a bit sweeter than Laurenston’s usual Pride books (no complaints here!) and her trademark sense of humor was present throughout.

This is yet another entry in the pairing of short stories/novellas from Shelly Laurenston and Cynthia Eden. I have to be honest I get these for the Laurenston stories but I am happy to say that due to these I did discover Cynthia Eden and have enjoyed other works by her outside of these.

How I loved this half-ology! Let me count the ways: Egbert Ray Smith is one of my favorite Wolf shifters, who just so happens to be very good at killin' . Darla Mae Lewis is a pacifist. That was pure genius. I love how Shelly Laurenston brings in previous characters like Sara's parents and Blaynie's father, Ezra Thorpe. And her novels are always hilarious. This one did not disappoint.

This has 2 stories in it. One from Shelly Laurenston and one from Cynthia Eden. The story from Shelly, Like a Wolf with a Bone, is a really good one. You finally get a look into Eggie, Dee-Ann Smith's Father, and see why Dee-Ann is the way she is. And I have got to say, I LOVE IT!!! I could read Shelly's writing all-day-long!! This particular story has good humor, fighting, alpha tendencies and more. Not a lot of explicit detailed sex scenes, PHEW!, but you still get your "romance" in the story....more

Eggbert *Eggie* Ray Smith is feared by everyone, the members of his own pack, his fellow Marines, mostly due to being very good at his job: killing……. Everyone except Darla Mae Lewis, (who is a pacifist), whom he encounters while on leave in Smithville, NC, where the Lewis Pack is based. She lives in San Francisco and works as a pastry chef for the Van Holtz pack in one of their exclusive restaurants. Mr. Van Holtz, for some unknown reason, sent Darla Mae home, insisting that she take a little vacation.

Darla Mae is the baby of her family and her sisters are very overprotective. And she couldn’t be more different than her sisters. Her sisters, whom are all “Maes”, are mated to Eggie’s brothers, whom are all “Rays”. (It really is hysterical!) And, of course, once Eggie and Darla meet, there is an immediate attraction for both. As the story unfolds, there is an attempt on Darla Mae’s life and Eggie takes things into his own hands, literally. Once he has the situation under control, he takes her back to Smithville, TN to his home, where he can better protect her. Of course, his brothers’ mates think he is evil incarnate and are worried for Darla Mae’s well-being, so they all follow them back to Tennessee. Once in Tennessee, things start to happen quickly. There are a few bumps in the road with the Lewis Pack being accepting of Eggie, and of course, the Smith Pack has to make sure that Darla Mae is worthy of Eggie. And, they all find out the reason behind Darla Mae’s boss being insistent that she take a vacation. She saw something she shouldn’t have. There is another attempt on her life and all of the shifters in and around Smithville, TN help out, and once Eggie makes the scene, they are reminded why he is so feared. No one messes with anything or anyone Eggie considers his.

I loved this story. No one writes with humor like Shelly Laurensten. Of course, this is a prequel, going back and telling us how Darla Mae Lewis tamed the enigma that is Eggert Ray Smith. We also hear from the Magnus Pack in this book, which was a hoot. The interaction between the brothers and their mates, is, as always, too much fun!! Those sisters are a force to be reckoned with. And, Eggie’s Sugar Bug!!! For those of you who haven’t read this series, that’s their daughter Dee Ann, affectionately known as Sugar Bug. And you really have got to read this series in order to understand how hysterical that name is for little ol’ Dee Ann!! The epilogue ends up in the “present day” timeline within this series. I am telling ya’ll, this is absolutely one of the best, funniest, action packed series that I have ever read. Definitely in my top five series of all time. If you’ve read this series, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, there aren’t enough words for me to tell you what ya’ll are missing!! ;)

The book starts off with Eggie and Darla meeting, both are on mandatory work vacations hiding out from their fighting mated siblings ( Eggie’s brothers mated to Darla’s sisters). Darla doesn’t know it but someone is trying to kill her and of course it’s Eggie to the rescue. Eggie might be a loner, a killer, and not much for emotions and talking put he is the sweetest shifter in history. He takes every measure to make sure Darla is safe and well taken care of, he knows he might not be her first choice for protection but he do anything to make sure she’s safe.

Darla Mae takes one look into Eggie’s eyes and knows there’s nowhere safer than with him. Her sisters may think she’s lost her mind but she knows Eggie’s just misunderstood and mistreated by his pack. Darla is so quick to accept Eggie that he doesn’t know how to handle her. It’s great seeing the quietest, pacifist little Lewis sister wow the scariest Smith male around.

There are also glimpses of Sissy and Smitty parents along with Sara Morrighan of the Magnus Pack parents that add to the fun look into the past.

Wed or Dead 4.5 stars
Wed or Dead is action packed. Gage is a wolf shifter and Kayla is the woman hunting him, the only problem is she’s also the woman he just married. Kayla is undercover trying to get close to Gage so the hunters she works with can get rid of him and his pack of monster shifters. Gage has known all along that Kayla is a hunter but that doesn’t stop him from wanting her and convincing her that she wants him too. Kayla is turn between being loyal to the man she’s falling for, her hunter friends and coming to the understanding that maybe all shifters aren’t monster murders. Gage and Kayla have to figure out whose friend or foe and if they can trust each other enough stick together.(less)

My only issue with reviewing anthologies really is that the rating can be so mixed.

"Like A Wolf With A Bone" by Shelly Laurenston, wasn't my favorite. Shelly is one of my "guilty pleasure" authors...however this story was written like any other Laurenston book however almost all of the characters with the exception of the Hero and Heroine were really very annoying. I found myself skipping pages which is blasphemy for a avid reader like me. I would have given this story only 2 stars.

As much as I wanted to give this five stars because I'm a huge fan of Shelly Laurenston's work, I just couldn't. Like a Wolf With a Bone contained a lot of the usual elements in telling the story of Dee-Ann Smith's parents; Eggie Ray Smith and Darla Mae Lewis. It had numerous types of shifters but mainly wolf, lion and bear along with the rivalries between them leading to some bitch slapping. It had typical family arguments leading to bitch slapping and some hot scenes of loving which...didn't l...more As much as I wanted to give this five stars because I'm a huge fan of Shelly Laurenston's work, I just couldn't. Like a Wolf With a Bone contained a lot of the usual elements in telling the story of Dee-Ann Smith's parents; Eggie Ray Smith and Darla Mae Lewis. It had numerous types of shifters but mainly wolf, lion and bear along with the rivalries between them leading to some bitch slapping. It had typical family arguments leading to bitch slapping and some hot scenes of loving which...didn't lead to any bitch slapping. Perhaps because one just does not do that to Miss Darla Mae.

And I think it was that that was missing from the story. A lot of the best of the author's books, whether writing as Shelly Laurenston or G.A. Aiken contain a fair amount of conflict between the fated couple. After all, how can you know when someone truly loves you unless they've bitten / clawed / chained / muzzled you? There was none of that in Like a Wolf With a Bone. Darla Mae just happily accepted her rescuer and decided to go for it and Eggie Ray also didn't put up any fight. All of that was left to Darla Mae's sisters and from there we discover the origins of Smithtown's famous pie shop and the road race between the wolves and lions.

As a comparison,

When He Was Bad (Includes Magnus Pack, #4)

containing Miss Cogeniality is a better story of some of the more 'mature' characters. Or perhaps that should just be 'older' characters?

Cynthia Eden's Wed or Dead story maintains the standard that I've come to expect in that it was a good short story on a par with the story in the When He Was Bad anthology. This is the story of Kayla and Gage and starts right as they are walking up the aisle to get married. She's a hunter who works for a company contracted by the government to capture or kill supernaturals that the ordinary police couldn't possibly handle.

He's a wolf shifter.

A perfect match for each other then if not for the tiny fact that Gage is Kayla's latest target for elimination.

Wed or Dead had a lot going in its 150 pages or so. Everything from some hot sex between the couple, numerous betrayals, family matters, a lot of fighting and two weddings. In fact, it was probably too much happening all at once but the fact that despite everything going, there was still a resolution to the story speaks of a very good effort. However, there was probably enough here for a full novel with a just a little more fleshing out.

On the whole, a worthwhile read filling out more of the history of known characters of Shelly Laurenston's world with the added bonus of a story from Cynthia Eden.(less)

Howl for It is Miss Darla and Eggie's story. Up til now we've known Miss Darla as a sweetheart who is excepting of everyone and kind of a mother hen. Eggie is a homicidal maniac who only cares for miss Darla and Dee Ann. The first Novella in the book is called ‘Like a Wolf with a Bone’, and it’s by Shelly Laurenston.
Keep in mind as I write this review, that I typically don’t read novella’s, or books with more than one story inside, as I like my books to be a bit longer, however, recently I read a story, ‘Bear Meets Girl’ by Shelly Laurenston, who is one of the authors here, and as I loved it so much, I decided to give this one a try as well.

Like a Wolf with A Bone, starts on, somewhere, I think in the 1970’s, but as the wolves are somewhat long lived, I cannot be entirely certain. There are a few hints to give that impression however, such as one of the cars, a 1971 Plymouth GTX, which I know, really could mean nothing; but there was also a concert, in which a rock band famous in the 70’s was one of the coveted entertainers, as well as a few other mentions, that you’ll have to read to find out about.

I liked the first story by Shelly Laurenston, ‘Like a wolf without a bone’, but I LOVED ‘Wed or Dead’ by Cynthia Eden.

This being my first story by Cynthia Eden, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but again, I am so, so, SO glad I gave this book a chance, as it’s definitely going on the keeper shelf.

In this story, we have the female lead, Kayla, a bad-ass; take charge, paranormal butt-kicking human, whose fate led her to a small chapel in Sin City, where she’s married male lead, wolf shifter, and all around good-guy Gage.

I highly recommend this book, to anyone who likes fast, action packed drama, with a little love, blood, and lust thrown in for good measure. I’d consider this a paranormal romance, but true to my love of detailed plots, I gotta say, I would love to see ‘Wed or Dead’ as a full length novel, or even a sequel would be awesome!

Sensual reads, my first introduction to Ms Laurenston, will definitely have to look for others by her.

Great combination of colloquialisms and stereotypes about a portion of the population that traditionally has a large family that is interrelated and a tendency toward two name sobriquets...Egbert Ray (I ask you, a killer nicknamed 'Eggie'?), Darla Mae...drag races against the lioness shifters...pie bake offs...what fun!

3.5 stars - I am going through a reviewing slump (and am itching to get to the next book:) so just a few thoughts and they aren't proof read very well either - sorry.

I liked Laurenston's story the best of the two here, though for a stone cold killer like Eggie Smith (who we've seen in the background in other books) his mating/romance was almost sweet. I actually really liked this story all the way up to the epilog when the story jumps to the future and Eggie's daughter is bringing home the enemy...more

"Like a Wolf With a Bone" - reminds me why I like Shelly Laurenston so much! The characters in these stories are so funny, and in the midst of all their animal characteristics they show sweet, "human" qualities. In this story we go back in time (a little) to learn how Dee-Ann Smith's parents, Darla Mae and Eggie Ray met and fell in love. Too cute.

Loved this short story! I think this is now one of my favorites by Laurenston. Set in the 1970's and centered around Dee-Ann's (Big Bad Beast) parents, Eggie and Darla, this was a really fun romp. It was great to see a different perspective of one of the most feared characters in the series. Eggie was really endearing in his awkwardness around Darla and I only wish that the story was longer so we could've spent more time with this couple.

In this book we are taken back to when Eggie was first out of the Marines and how he met and fell in love with his wife. This background story helps to take a fascinating character from flat and frightening and transforms him into a three dimensional being with fears, loves, strengths, and weaknesses. Retrospectively, it allows the reader to understand just how much his daughter loves him, and idolizes him.

The second tale in this book almost makes me want to see what else Cynthia Eden is capable...more
