When I finished that book, my first thought was "What the heck just happened?"

Ok, not my most original thought about the book, but seriously, WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?

Loved this book!
If you like hot vampires, twisted royal family lies,and deep dark secrets then you have the perfect mix all right here bundle into one little book!

While this book is awesome for trying to figure out what's coming next and trying to decipher the mysteries and twisted truths it does leave you hanging with loose ends. Sequel/Series MAYBE?! BRING IT ON!

There were a few minor things I'd like to see happen if a sequel is in line. One, I need some more action, hot romance (bring on the the steamy scenes) and not that there wasn't enough but more twists and SHUT THE FRONT DOOR moments!(Sorry Love those in books!) Two,I'd like to see more multiple character point of views then third party. Three, I'd like the book to be longer. I just felt I didn't get to spend enough time with anyone in this book. I'd pay more to have a little more time in the next book! I'm not expecting 600 pages but okay I would LOVE it!

I would recommend this book because I would honestly read it again and probably will. It's a shorter book so it will have to have a sequel or series to tie up loos ends.I will be adding this author and book to my favorites and pretty much going to be doing the pee dance waiting for the next book. If Cege Smith gives us more this could turn into amazing story and I would buy it!

The price was cheaper on Barnes and Noble than Amazon (rarely happens)so I chose Barnes and Noble. However,(And whether this has anything to do with formatting or not I have no clue?)but it froze and skipped me back a couple of times. Could just be Barnes and Noble???

After I wrote all this I saw on the authors Facebook page the Sequel come out in September! I'm not changing the review though...

I was very impressed by this first book of what I believe is a unique work by Cege Smith. I got so much more than I expected from this free Kindle read. I am referring to this as a novella because I read it in a few hours but it was not a short story by any means. I am not sure how many pages it would be in hardcover format. It felt like maybe 200 pages to me but I could be wrong. If I find out for certain, I will make a correction. The story was very rich so I don't want potential readers to avoid it for the novella label.

This story had a couple of master level accomplishments that are not commonly well done in a novella. First, Ms. Smith never lost control of the storyline or the characters. Sometimes authors aren't able to make a story flow seamlessly when they are trying to keep it short. Not the case here. Second, Ms. Smith did not box the characters into templates so they could fit into a shorter format. Everyone surprised me. These two factors were very critical to the validity of the story since the main character, Angeline, was constantly being winded by lie after lie. To make this work, the reader had to be as caught off guard as Angeline. Therefore it was important that the characters had enough range to both love and betray her. It was so complex. Loved it.

Angeline is the Princess and only heir to a kingdom always ruled by men. Her bloodline goes back to the man that won a bloody war against the vampires 300 years prior. Vampires were destroyed along with their threat. Maybe or maybe not. Along comes Malin. He is a vampire that kidnaps Angeline to take her to his Master. Along the way, things go to hell several times in several ways. Malin starts out with the minimum requirements of a hero. As he works his way toward doing what is right, he makes mistake after mistake. Again, amazing what Ms. Smith did with the novella format. There is romance but not fully formed only the discovery of forbidden feelings. I would say it's YA but there is quite a bit of violence so not so sure. That's about all I can say without giving away spoilers. Trust me, you don't want those.

I enjoyed this one so much that I immediately dished out $3.99 for book two. Of course there is a cliffhanger but I felt it was 'neat' to a degree. I didn't get too annoyed because the second book is out and available. I did take off one star for the worldbuilding. I felt that the corners were cut to close on this aspect. Sometimes good fantasy requires detailed descriptions of trees and wind direction. It was there but it wasn't enough to see things clearly. Also, the Angeline is a princess with a dying father. She has never really seen the kingdom fully so I felt her impressions should have been described in more detail. There were typos but they were few and far between. I highly recommend this book to lovers of dark fantasy with interesting characters and expert use of the element of surprise. (less)

Heiress of Lies is primarily based on Angeline and Connor's POV. Which gives readers the opportunity to see how events unfold through Connor the vampire's eyes.
Angeline for the past 2 years has been living at the convent, St. Abeth, when she gets word that her father is dying and wishes to see his beautiful daughter. As Angeline is on her way home from the convent her men are attacked and she is taken captive by Connor. During her time with Connar, Angeline recalls some memories and eventually she is introduced to the darker side of her Robart family line.

At first Angeline keeps trying to think of a way to escape but Connor always seems to be one step ahead of her. Every time Angeline has strong thoughts, Connor seems to know exactly what she is thinking/feeling. Angeline is very unsure of Connor ... she was told that "his kind" was extinct, as well as vicious monsters. But Angeline is torn by what she was brought up learning about these monsters and how Connor actually makes her feel. To her surprise, Connor is intelligent, thoughtful, and respectful of her and her needs. Connor is equally shocked and surprised by not only Angeline's beauty, but by the fact that she doesn't see him as a "monster".

Later on in the book Cege Smith gives us a glimpse of Connor's past life, when he was still human and how he became a vampire.

With this information, you find yourself actually feeling for Connor (if you hadn't yet) as well as gaining deeper insight into why Connor kidnapped Angeline. It also becomes easier to understand Connor. Not only the man, but the vampire that he has become.

This book has tons of suspense and ups and downs. I would definitely recommend you read it if you're a fan of Vampires and or Historical Fiction!!

Quite a good example of a para/supernatural vampire story. The main character is heir to the throne of her kingdom, which is all fine and dandy except for one small minor secret. That secret has changed the way she thinks and feels about everything and everyone around her. This story was everything I hoped it would be. I loved the twisted truths and trying to figure out what would come next. I also loved the history of the country, Altera; and finding out that one version of the history was not necessarily the correct one.

I have to admit I like reading a good vampire story or two and was pleased when I was offered a complimentary copy to review! Heiress of Lies has a little more to it than the average vampire story. From the beginning to end, I was hooked. Heiress of Lies is a captivating novel that I couldn't stop reading until I had finished, and still wanted to read more. The story starts off strong by introducing Angeline and giving us a good look into her character. As a protagonist, Angeline is exceptional. She's immediately accessible as a woman who is strong and sensible yet riddled with misgivings. She's the kind of leading lady you can happily root for, telling yourself, "yeah, that's totally what I would have done had it been me."

Much of the praise for this character's likability is due to the author's skill with words. Cege Smith writes with clarity, subtlety, and sophistication. She's created a convincing portrayal of a young woman caught between intention and impulse. Angeline wants to be clever, controlled, and responsible. But she's also sheltered, vulnerable, and emotional. This tenuous balance lends realism and respectability to her character.

Plus she's smart, and I always like that.

In contrast, I didn't feel much for Connor. He lacks Angeline's complexity, and there's a general sense of weakness just under his surface. I'd say he's as well-written as Angeline is, but he isn't as attractive. He's saved by the fact that, as a duo, they're quite interesting. I really enjoyed the way Angeline's feelings for Connor developed. From early on she's attracted to him, but she tempers that with caution and practicality. Meanwhile he has to contend with just how deep his feelings really go.

As for plot, the first half of the book is a little slow. Then things pick up greatly with a healthy dose of intrigue and urgency. And more intrigue. Sadly, the book leaves off just as things really get interesting. Clever Cege. I definitely need to know what happens next and plan on buying the sequel, The Queen's Betrayal. And then there's the third book, Trials of Truth, which isn't out yet.

This was a great story, I enjoyed each character (good and bad and maybe a bit of both). I won't go into describing the story line as that has been done already, but I will say I look forward to reading the next book in the series to see what happens. This book starts off with a smart and strong female MC and ends with you wanting to know what happens next. The very different vampire origins premise is a nice addition. This novel has quite a few twists and surprises that separate it from other paranormal stories. The historical/fantasy setting also sets Heiress of Lies apart from the more blase vampire novels. But in the case of this book, the prologue gave away far too much. Therefore the book did not have enough tension or surprises as it went on. Adding insult to injury, the prologue is repeated as Chapter 35, Word for word as far as I could tell!!! With only one short final chapter after that - which resolves nothing, really, except perhaps readers' interest in Book 2. This just feels like lazy writing (which is a complaint I had about a lot of this book, actually, especially where the romance is concerned).

This had a pretty fresh take on vampires, which I appreciated, but that being said I didn't think that the take was developed enough as vampirism. That is, the vampire coven seems simply like a political faction against the Robarts' reign over the Kingdom of Altera, as opposed to a dangerous supernatural enemy. Their threat never quite feels visceral, only political, which is an odd thing when you're talking about blood-drinking immortals.

I generally liked the main character, Angeline. She is compelling, smart beyond her 18 years, and massively pissed off when she finds out that she's been lied to so deeply her whole life - truly an heiress of lies! However, I take issue with the following: rather than calling out the raging sexism of her world, she - and thus the book itself - simply repeat various iterations of "She cursed the day she wasn't born male", thus upholding male superiority without real question. One would think that as part of Angeline's 're-education' (also via males) in this story, she would call out how messed up that is rather than going along with everything. She remains a pawn being manipulated by men, and the book doesn't give any indication that it's aware of social commentary. The book plays it straight, and the excerpt from Book 2 didn't give me a sense that the rest of Angeline's tale will be all that different.(less)

As with the main character of the book, Angeline, the reader is left confused and unknowing, even though the book is told from 3rd person and not particularly attached to any characters. I did enjoy the premise of the book, and the characters are well written - realistic and likable. Plot-wise there aren't many characters, so its pretty easy to keep things straight; the difficult part is remembering all the history/lore that makes up the country (world? it seems like there's only one country).

This book was given to me as a r2r.
To be honest I didn't finish the book. Perhaps its because I have gotten busier but the book didn't capture my attention. I almost felt like it was a chore to read at times. However I do like the way the book developed up to the middle. I stopped because I was confused at some point about what was happening. I think I may restart this book when I get more time.

I got this book for free so I didn't expect much out of it. However, it was a lot better than I thought and now I'm wondering if there's a sequel. I enjoyed the world Smith created with the vampires, clans, wraiths, and humans trying to compromise. Some parts of it were a bit on the cheesy side but I'm looking forward to reading more.
