There have been many stories penned about vampires, werewolves and supernatural entities, so these days the key to grabbing the attention of the reader is originality, and in Slippery Souls, Rachael H. Dixon achieves this in fine style.
Most of us considers where we will truly end up when our days on earth are over, well imagine entering a seaside resort, complete with scorching sun, deep blue sea, deckchairs, golden sands and ice cream. Sounds great, right? WRONG! Sunray Bay, the author's uniqu...more

Libby is having bad day. That tends to happen when you’re run over and killed. She finds herself in the perplexing Sunray Bay with her dog Rufus, who now has her soul. No one seems to know what to do on the beautiful beach, but it soon becomes clear the donkey man is trying to kill Libby - again. Escaping from him she bumps into the unemotional and mysterious Grim, who seems to have an idea about what’s going on. He grudgingly takes Libby to see someone called Gloria and gradually Libby finds ou...more
Libby is tired of her relationship with her boyfriend. She just doesn't like him anymore, yeah they fight and argue but it's not that, she has no feelings for him whatsoever. A delightful writing style and very wry humour makes an enjoyable novel and a fast-paced read. Poor Libby, thinking the worst problem in her life is waiting to dump her boring, unpleasant, live-in; she just doesn’t realize worse things are in store-namely, not living at all. If Libby could have expected any sort of afterlife at all, instead of oblivion, it’s for certain she would never have imagined Sunray Bay, the strangest “other side” ever. What’s more, not only is she installed there, her te...more
I finished reading this book a couple of days ago and I’m still not sure how I feel about it... It was so different!
There were several things that jumped out at me. The first was the tone – it was the kind of dry quirky text that is fun because it’s so matter of fact. I enjoyed it, but I also have to point out that I never really forgot I was reading. You know the feeling I’m talking about, right? When you’re pulled into the story and go one hundred pages without taking notice? Well, I did notic...more

Libby is an ordinary girl, with a decently ordinary life, with a crappy boyfriend and a dog.
This one sunny day, she goes out to buy some milk with her dog Rufus, since her crappy boyfriend left her without any milk, she was just deciding that she would leave said crappy boyfriend when she dies. She's hit by a car, rather suspiciously, I might add.
Suddenly, she wakes up in the afterlife and her dog can talk.
She's in Sunray Bay, a little city by the sea, full of dead people.
But the afterlife isn't...more

Slippery Souls by Rachael H Dixon is a fun read about a girl named Libby Hood. At the beginning of the book, she and her dog, Rufus, are struck by a car and end up in a place called Sunray Bay, purgatory for the rest of us. Now Libby finds herself on a beach where her dog can talk to her, monsters are real, and nothing in the world makes sense. As we travel along with Libby, we discover one kooky place that will keep you entertained for hours.

This book was delightful, in the full, italicized sense of the word. It takes on a vivid, irreverent style (think Terry Pratchett) and melds it with some dark(ish) fantasy.
One moment, Libby is marching out of the grocery store, jug of milk in hand, set on breaking up with her slob of a boyfriend-soon-to-be-ex. The next, she is killed by a hit-and-run. When she wakes up, she’s in a beach house at Sunray Bay, a kind of afterlife, she assumes, since her also-dead-dog Rufus can now talk.

A wonderful debut from Ms. Dixon, and a tremendously fun twist on the usual urban fantasy tropes. At once familiar and comfy for fans of urban fantasy, Rachael switches up the setting from the usual dark cities to a sunny seaside resort, and throws in a healthy dash of irreverence to the proceedings.
From a talking dog to a pack of werewolves living in a gentleman's club to an OCD vampire -- and our plucky, snarky heroine Libby -- Rachael populates her world with a unique cast of characters, and...more

Rachael has created an amazingly dark yet funny world in Slippery Souls. It starts with Libby considering changes in her life to dying to being chased by monsters with her now talking dog in tow. The book is well written, the world of Sunray Bay feels as real as anywhere when reading it. Even with the fantasy and paranormal beings and activity, there is no duex ex mechana (spelling). This novel gets down to the gritty when nescessary and even with close calls these characters have to work to esc...more

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this incredibly witty and dark fantasy!
I loved the main character! Libby's sarcastic inner dialogue paired with her odd disposition was laugh out loud funny. In truth, all of the characters were well written. They leapt up off the pages in this vivid, dark and twisted world. I did have a little trouble keeping up with all of the switching of character perspective and time at first, but ultimately found this to add depth to the story.

I paid for this book after meeting Rachel at an author talk and I wasn’t disappointed. This is not a genre I normally read but I was glad I did. I found this an enjoyable read with plenty to engage a reader and keep their interest. I simply could not put this book down once I started to read it. And this book has gotten better with repeated reading. Little things you may miss in the first reading become apparent adding humor and emotion to this little...more

Slippery Souls reveals a new look into the world of the dead. While it had all the typical scary, go Boo things, such as witches, zombies, werewolves, and vampires, it had such a different take on all of them that it was refreshing and a delight to read. I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to everyone.

Rachael H Dixon is an Urban Fantasy & Horror writer who lives in the cold and windy northeast of England. She craves sunlight and warmth, and as such her skin is so white it's almost translucent.
She's been writing ever since she could hold, albeit strangely, a pen. Her love for the macabre stems from reading James Herbert novels and watching Vincent Price films when she was small.
