This was my first time reading this author, but I will be reading more. The story deals with a cult, where women and children are inferior. The scenes of brutality against the women are horrific and made me cringe, and kept me reading.

The author's strengths are her characters, taking such a simple, basic plot and creating a unique and vibrant story out of it. The ones helping the main character aren't two-dimensional throw-aways but multi-layered, even with only playing a small part. I liked tha...more

What makes this story so gripping is that cults such as the one described in this story really do exist, as do the abuses described. The story is riveting as the patterns of abuse are passed from father to son. Vengeance is not a concept I support, and as it turns out, that it is not what the main character seeks either. She is rather a conduit for retribution. The story is very well written and I would venture to guess aspects of it were carefully researched. Paranormal aspects aside, the so ca...more
What a harrowing start to a story, and beware because it only gets worse. Poor Macie and the women/children of High Gap. This is a bleak life and world that Ms Yares paints, eloquently, but still bleak and horrifying.

As Macie suffers one final beating she crosses over into another "world", here lies some good things, is it heaven or hell though?

What she is used for by the other women sits badly with her, however as hell becomes reality in the village of High Gap, she does appear to be having fun...more

Vengeance, a controversial act. All main religions today warn us against this baser, instinctive reaction to a perceived slight. Nonetheless, each major set of beliefs include scenes of revenge in their canonical texts. Vengeance is a human thing, frequently the last resource in a failed struggle, and too often, the last card in the loser's hand.
I love stories of revenge. The book of my life is Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, and there's no other story so dre...more
I can only start by saying that Kat Yares is an amazing writer who captured my attention and my emotions from the first page and her writing held me within the story throughout the entire book.
Even though this is a work of fiction you can not help but fell the pain, fear, loss and hate that radiates from the pages, but you also feel love and redemption as an entire town pays for the horrible way it women and children were treated.
This story gives you the chance to live through the main female ch...more
This is a novella about religion gone oh-so-wrong and the self righteous abuse that comes from it. Abuse of women and children, where males rein supreme and women are there to serve. Where children are thrown away because they are born the wrong sex. This should horrify you and when you start to feel like you just can't stomach anymore, the author throws in the element of the paranormal to shake things up. With excellent character development, Kat Yares writes in a very descriptive manner, that...more
