In YA, there's a lot of romance, am I right? You'd be hard pressed to find a single book without some kind of love story. If you'd love to read a book that is, wonder of wonders solely about friendship and family... look no further than Emily For Real by Sylvia Gunnery.
I really enjoyed how romance was never really an option between Emily and Leo. There's just no chemistry. And that happens in real life--hello, high school. Which is why it...more

There’s a lot happening in Sylvia Gunnery’s YA novel Emily For Real. Emily Sinclair’s boyfriend has just broken up with her and her grandfather has just died. She’s drifting away from her long-time best friend Jenn, and her family is beginning to uncover a series of secrets that upset all of them, especially Emily. Meanwhile, her new friend Leo is trying to care for his little sister and shield her from the problems caused by their alcoholic mother. These are all weighty topics, and it can feel...more

Gunnery hits a lot of topics in this short book. In 196 pages she deals with a break up, the loss of a friend, anger issues, alcoholism, cheating, adoption, even gay marriage flits into the story at one point, and although these are all good topics to be discussing I felt like few of them got the page time they needed to really be dealt with properly. That being said I really loved what she had to say about some of it, and there were some truly touching moments between Emily and her family, I gu...more
So, this was a quick read. It's kind of one of those that hovered between two and three stars at times.
Emily is actually a good protagonist to read about. She comes across as a real teenager going through some real problems (or, perhaps, she is Emily 'for Real'... ba dum chh). She doesn't come across as too wrecked nor too perfect so as not to be relatable at all. There are times when she comes across dull to the outside world, but her inward thoughts keep it interesting.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
My Summary: When Emily's grandfather dies, he leaves behind a few dark secrets that threaten to tear apart her entire family. To add to her troubles, her jerk of a boyfriend breaks up with her after meeting someone else. Emily's sure life can't get much worse - until her best friend starts hooking up with some guy and Emily's on her own. When she meets Leo, they develop an unlikely frien...more

This is a gentle, thoroughly engaging book. The characters and situations are fully authentic and I really cared about the two main characters. Highly recommend it for adults and teen readers. I know, I'm breaking my own rule about not commenting on books written by my friends, but I hope a lot of people do get to read it.
My biggest problem with Sylvia Gunnery’s Emily For Real was that it squished a variety of topics like a breakup, family secrets, alcoholism, etc. into a short book. As a result, none of these subjects were covered in depth. However, there were other problems as well: namely, that Emily was kind of immature, that what was supposed to be a meaningful friendship between Emily and Leo felt superficial at best, and that because I felt emotionally disconnected from Emily, I just didn’t find her family...more
