meiji capitalism.
the argument that can be made from reading this novela is that small-scale capitalism was democratic and had the potential to liberate working class women.
it's easy to see why it might be used as a textbook for a japanese history class.
Anna Tatelman
Style was a bit expository, but I loved the concept of this novel. Think more assertive heroine of Their Eyes Were Watching God meets less wealthy Scarlett O'Hara meets snarky Jane Eyre. I think I just have an automatic weakness for spunky, independent women.
