This book is wild. It has such a blistering tone throughout and offers such a litany of "This was How I Was Wronged" bullet points that it can really make you question why anyone would want to be a professional writer in any medium. Still the level of insight and candor is refreshing for a guide like this and I'm glad that Rebeck took the time to write it. For: all playwrights thinking about taking it to the next level. Also, very gossipy if you're into that sort of thing which I is, baby, I is.

Recommends it for: people against the Writer's Strike
Shelves: drama, non-fic, movies
While this book is incredibly well-written, it is also infuriating and ultimately, depressing. The things writers are subjected to in the name of the bottom line are apalling. The experiences Theresa Rebeck shares are vivid enough to make any aspiring writer to think twice about writing for a living--which is the problem (and why it only gets 3 stars).

Also, if you find yourself getting angry at the writer's side of the Writer's Strike, this book will help you re-direct your animosity.

Very informative and entertaining. Helpful for anyone trying to make a living--or even just some money--from writing in theater, tv, or film. She does come across as quite bitter much of the time, however. While she does this with some charm and wit, it does get a bit tedious. It makes me want to seek out another more upbeat perspective on these industries.
