Alexander's life's mission is to restore his family's good name and standing in society, after his mother selfishly ruined it by running off with her lover. He has done everything considered proper: chair a committee, help charities, etc. Now he is trying to marry off his siblings to improve their family's connections. Meeting the unconventional Lydia has made Alexander realize that he needs a break from his life. Lydia and her math problems are a breath of fresh air for him: when he is immersed in answering them, the world melts away and he is doing something that is purely for his own pleasure and not anyone else's.

Being with Alexander has also allowed Lydia to discover that there is life outside of mathematics -- but, each day and pleasure she experiences with Alexander, brings up unwanted memories from her past that threaten to come between her and Alexander.

Lydia and Alexander were wonderful characters -- very dynamic and sympathetic, with very complex baggage. Both of them are trying to protect their families, but at the expense of their own personal lives. I thought it was ironic that one man's refuge is another man's prison: Alexander found escape and enjoyment in doing the math problems that Lydia creates -- and Lydia has cloistered herself in the world of mathematics.

Every encounter, every conversation chipped away at their armors, leaving them vulnerable to one another -- but, they learn that, being thus exposed makes them stronger and not weaker.

"Tell me what you want and you can have the locket back."

She spun around, her skin reddening with anger. "How dare you manipulate me!"

"It's a fair trade."

"It is not. No trade is fair when the winner also loses."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you haven't a care for either of the things being exchanged," Lydia said. "The locket means nothing to you and everything to me. My wishes mean nothing to you and everything to me. So I tell you what you want to hear and win the locket back, but I've still lost, haven't I? You've still gotten what you want."

There is also another layer in the story -- the mysterious "C" and his correspondences with Lydia's sister Jane. He peers into the domestic lives of Lydia, Jane and their grandmother with seeming omniscience and adds an edge of suspense and dangwe to the story. I kept wondering who he was and what he wanted with Lydia and her family.

Lydia's pursuit of the locket, the mystery man, and interesting supporting characters (Jane and Alexander's father are my favorites) make this a fascinating read that I couldn't put down.

I love Math and this book rekindled a bit of my puzzle-solving self. And this is why readers of historical romances should give this a try: Nina Rowan blends the unlikely combination of mathematics and romance and came up with a winner of a book.(less)

"Gee, that math is so romantic!" Um...yeah. I'm pretty sure I've never heard those words uttered. I like trying new-to-me authors, and I'm almost always up for reading historicals, so I decided to try out A Study in Seduction even if I feared the mathematician angle wouldn't exactly sweep me off my feet. Rowan gives readers a romance that is different in many ways. First, there is Lydia, a nerdy, socially awkward heroine with a dark past. Then, there is Alexander, a hero who legitimately can be expected to evoke the exoticism and dangers of Russian Cossacks and steppes. This book was a huge disappointment for me. I thought the writing was plain and sometimes not reasonably fast paced. The author tended to jump from one idea to the next without really delving deep or explaining what was going on. I found the writing to be confusing. Another thing is that the story is highly unbelievable. Lydia does not have any problems with whoring herself out with Alexander but then has issues when he proposes her marriage. Any smart woman in her deplorable situation would jump to the first man who proposes to her. In addition, the fact that she is supposedly a genius is mathematics does not redeem her as a smart person. I found Lydia to be annoying and immature. In conclusion, she is a highly unlikely woman, especially for that time period. Another thing I did not like about her was that she wanted to help Talia with ragged children schools, wanted to write papers on mathematics seriously this is impossible especially if she will be married. Once the reality of domestic life sinks in she will be overstressed and overburdened like modern women who chose to have careers. That is why a woman like her is just unbelievable; a woman like her simply did not exist at that time period. A rational woman would not choose work over comfort and love, as modern day feminists are choosing.

Alexander was a nice hero but like all characters in the book he lacked depth. He is the oldest son and he must marry and produce a heir yet the common girl does not interest him. Moreover, of course he becomes interested in Lydia (because she is sooo smart) another feminist dream. Nevertheless, other than that he is honorable he defends Lydia (although I believe her actions do not merit a defense, and why any man would want a woman with kids is beyond me). He loves her and he is always there for her. The only redeemable point of the book are the sex scenes, which are okay.

The hero and heroine meet when Lydia tracks Alexander down after she finds out that he has bought a locket, which her grandmother had pawned. She instills a wager and she looses, with no hope to get the locket she is not stuck with the dilemma of Alexander’s kiss. Which is so passionate and of course our heroine is quickly smitten by the hero. Their relationship escalates into a bond; however, our heroine is reluctant when the hero asks for her hand in marriage. As troubles looms from her past, will their love survive the tests and tribulations? Expect some unexpected surprises in the book, and overall it is not bad, however it is lacking. Lets hope the authors other books are better.

Alexander has spent the last two years working hard to restore his family's reputation. To this pressure is added the expectation that he marry and produce an heir to secure the earldom. Should he just do what his brother suggested? "Just find a sweet, empty-headed young chit... needn't do much except wed her and bed her...."?

It all comes crashing down when blue-eyed Lydia Kellaway walked up to his front door one evening asked him to sell the locket he purchased back to her, claiming it belonged to her mother. Their negotiation somehow turns into a challenge. Lydia sparks his curiosity: who is this woman? He even likes the sound of her voice, her scent, not of perfume or flowers, but of pencil and paper and clean starch. He wants to marry Lydia, but she keeps refusing his offer. Her reasons don't make sense, there's something she's not telling him. They love each other. She tries to quantify love with her mathematical theories, explains attraction and desire away with equations and theorems, it doesn't work that way.

Lydia is a mathematical prodigy: numbers have been her love since childhood. But her genius came with a price, people view her as oddity, her world is full of numbers and equations, she's spent the past decade living a quiet life with her grandmother and sister, working behind the scene, away from spotlight and social events. But Alexander Hall made her feel things. He affects her in ways she'd never felt before. She must be careful not to let him get past the wall she'd spent years building to protect herself.
Alexander needs to convince Lydia to marry him, to show her that love can't be proven in mathematical formulas or equations. Has he pushed her too hard and pushed her farther away? Will he succeed? Will she choose love?

It is rare to find a heroine such as Lydia in historical romance novels. If you like heroine with brain, beauty and fire, this book is it. Lydia is quite charming, beautiful, passionate and sensual if one bothers to look past all the dull exterior.
I love the role reversal of characters. We don't often see a heroine who has her own followers of smart men, intelligent and prestigious men following her like a little regiment.

Nina Rowan has delivered a witty and unusual storyline that offers fresh idea, with very unique and fascinating characters and plot. Yet, not lacking in passion, the love scenes would certainly satiate and meet romance readers' expectation. I also enjoyed her candid descriptions of simple things in our everyday life and turned them into colorful images: of light and sound, of people on the street, of emotion and feeling, of sensuality and passion, of one's thoughts, one's feeling towards another... and of chemistry between two lovers.

The fact that I dislike anything mathematical in real life (and I'm sure there are other romance readers like me out there who'd feel the same way), instead, I found myself fascinated by a heroine who is a math prodigy, I found it charming and endearing, and I loved this book instantly. Maybe it's reverse psychology, I found myself drawn to Lydia and cheering her on as I was reading the story. The mathematical parts in the story didn't bother me at all, nor was it a turn-off, the effect was the opposite, another talent credited to Rowan for her ability to deliver the story laced with numbers and formulas with smooth sailing. This is one book not to miss. A five-star worthy novel which is now on my 'fave' list.(less)

A Study in Seduction was a wonderful debut from Nina Rowan. I could not put down this quick read. The added element of mathematics was inspired and not something I have yet come across in any romance novel I have yet read. I thought the writing was very evocative and pretty. I liked that the heroine had her own ambitions, but was disappointed that part of her 'focus' on those ambitions had so much to do with healing/hiding. A Study in Seduction was a fun and easy read! I really enjoyed this story and I loved Lydia, she's smart, feisty and a fun character. I really enjoyed this story because the attraction between Lydia and Alexander didn't just revolve around physical attraction but also personality wise. The two become friends and a chemistry begins to build more and more between them. I really appreciated that Rowan took great detail with her characters. Lydia's mind is what is valued above all. I was excited when I received a copy of this book for a review. The book is well written and the story hooks the reader from the beginning. However, there were just somethings that I didn't like. Wow what an awesome read and what a great first book. It is sometimes a scary proprosition to read a new author nowadays with so many people doing their own publishing. A Study in Seduction is one of my favorite debuts so far this year! I really enjoyed everything about this book. Lydia is one of my favorite types of heroines--sharp, opinionated and unique with her brilliance but encouraged to explore that love of numbers by her family. (I loved that when she is nervous she recites math facts in her mind!) She was never shut out because she is female and had all the best tutors. Everything was looking up for Lydia until one summer at boarding school and her life changed forever and she chose to continue her work, but in a much smaller, quieter fashion to avoid drawing attention to herself. And she had been doing a fine job until she meets Alexander. Alexander with his Russian heritage and gruff father and flirtatious brother and lovely sister. His polite, compelling manor that tempts her like she has never been tempted before. Matching wits with him becomes a joy and watching the love blossom between them was wonderful. During their first encounter, Lydia explains that she is trying to find the mathematical basis for relationships and this just intrigues Alexander so much and adds a small dose of humor and instantly sets the stage for the sparks that are to come later. I liked seeing Alexander struggle with his feelings for Lydia, after all, she is not a member of a prominent family and not quite the match society would pick for him, but he listens to his heart first and I really liked that. I guessed the mystery aspect a bit early but I still liked watching it all unfold and I also appreciated how it didn't all get tied up with a bow right away. There is a bit of drama at the end that involves possibly a murder, an abduction or a riot or some combination. Nina Rowan has delivered a wonderful debut and I am so anxious for more books in this series! This book had everything--romance, sparks, passion, strong family connections, mystery, drama, intrigue, and a lovely happily ever after and I would recommend to historical romance fans easily. Overall, a strong debut filled a wonderfully written story and a love so hot and strong you will believe that one plus one can equal one. 4 1/2 stars

Oh, and the math problems? I will bow to Nina Rowan's research and believe they are correct :) They do not overwhelm the story at all but I did find myself wanting to stop and try to figure out the riddles...but I just kept reading instead and thankfully the answers are revealed in the story!

4.5 stars .. LOVED it!! Couldn't put it down!! Literally stayed up until 4am reading this book .. the characters are tons of fun and lots of twists involved. All I can say is Lord Northwood is a very patient and persistent man! Cannot wait to start Sebastian's book! This is going to be a great series!

Alexander is trying to have his family regain their footing in society while Lydia just wants to live in the background. She is a math genious who has always stayed out of the limelight. She has secrets she doesn't want revealed and Alexander is trying to remain without blemish. Nice story.

I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. I haven't come across many historical romances that have been able to hold my interest lately. I was up late reading this and just flew threw the pages. I liked both the hero and the heroine and thought it was a good match.

Well I give it a 2.5, it was what I wanted to read currently. Something easy and to take my mind away from other readings. It was very predictable unfortunately. I wish it was not so easy to see what was happening in the first 10 chapters, but an ok read. Not sure if I want to continue reading the next one, but I am curious to see what happens to Sebastian Hall.
