I can't recall who said that parody was a clever form of compliment, but it's so very true of J.M. Frey's Dark Side of the Glass, a lovely antidote to the deluge of paranormal romance, the brood of Stephanie Meyer and her ilk. While Frey admits her sources and inspiration as vampire detective series such as Angel, she explores the realities of a romance with a sullen, emo-bloodsucker in ways that make light of every sexed-up vampire story since Anne Rice wrote Interview with a Vampire. The Dark Side of the Glass is an amazingly FUN read! It breaks the fourth wall in a magical, wonderful way.
I couldn't help but think...What would it be like if I woke up in my favourite show, Doctor Who or Once Upon A Time?
According to Ms. Frey, it wouldn't be as great as you'd think. ;)
Mary is a fantastic character. Very easy to relate to, with her many flaws and quirks.
And Leondre (LOVED his name! Ha!) was perfectly written.

“The Dark Side of the Glass” by J.M. Frey is a fun and light reading where the protagonist finds herself in her favorite TV show one day. You think it would be a very fantastic and extraordinary thing to find yourself in the middle of a “dream” reality, but the things don’t go on as it is hoped. The things and people that once looked like real now are not beyond the unreality. Frey's The Dark Side of the Glass is an exceptionally fun read; I blasted through it in one sitting and loved every minute of it. A refreshing and mind-twistingly meta take on the Mary Sue convention in fanfiction, Glass managed to subvert all of my expectations, and leave me smiling.

I love vampires and I'm a TV junkie so that appealed to me right out of the gate! It was a lot of fun and really interesting to think about and then get a glimpse of what it might actually be like to be a part of your ultimate favourite TV show! The characters were really well written and I quickly learned to love them (even the villain), especially Mary and Leondre.
It's a short book and a quick read and I didn't want to put it down until I was finished.

J.M. Frey pokes light at all things vampire, serial, and fan based. A satire on the vampire dective this is a light and fun read. You do not have to be a fan of vampire dective stories to enjoy this novella.
Smart, sassy, and original! If you've ever enjoyed watching vampire tv shows and enjoy a nice nip of humour, give this a try!
It was a great story with twists to keep you interested and, indeed, guessing. Looking forward to the next one.

The overall idea was cool but ultimately it did not live up to its potential. The entire book felt like a drag and nothing ever really happened. For such a short book it was a chore to read.

An interesting concept...what fan has not thought about being sucked into the world of their favourite show. I could really relate to Mary; both with her obsession and not feeling appreciated. My one complaint with this book ... I wanted more.
