Pilate’s Key is an excellent and compelling beach read that turns out to be quite a bit more.

John Pilate has dodged some bullets in his life but he’s also taken a few in the pursuit of his curiosity and in service of his highly intelligent imagination. We find him at the beginning of this novel in Key West, Florida, literally soothing the most recent entanglements he’s had with bullets and a bruised ego. His goal is to round out the page count on a memoir about said bout with baddies and bullets

After a near death encounter in Nebraska John Pilate is temporarily re-locating to Key West Florida to write a book about his experience. He is a man who seems to find himself involved in circumstances beyond his control. In Key West he becomes inadvertently entangled in the death of a stranger and becomes immersed in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

This story is excellently crafted and written with a cast of characters that lend to the successful progression of the story. John Pilate is a charac

Enjoyed this sequel to Pilate's Cross. The characters are further developed and I enjoyed the Key West setting.

I thought this mystery to be enjoyable despite the slow start, though I think I probably would have had a better idea of where Pilate was mentally if I had read the previous book. There was ample backstory that was frequently referred to. I wasn't lost since everything was explained so well, but many of the characters like Kate were difficult to connect to simply because I didn't experience the first mystery beforehand. In other words, read the books in order.

The action was a bit slow at first.

This book clearly follows a previous book, for there are continuous references to it. What I think this book is about is that John Pilate has gone to Key West to write a book about the events of the previous book, but when he goes into a rest room at the back of a restaurant, he bumps into someone, who is shortly afterwards found with his throat cut. Eventually, he works out that the victim has passed something to him, and it appears those who killed the victim have worked this out too. We have ...more

I love a good mystery and the second book in this new series by Alexander Greenwood, Pilate’s Key, is a good example of a good mystery. This is the second book in the John Pilate Mysteries series and best read after the first book – Pilate’s Cross.

John Pilate has had his share of near death experiences and now is taking it easy on the beaches of Key West. John is getting some therapy to deal with Simon – his imaginary friend while writing a book. Things are looking up for John – including his lo

In this, the second of Alex Greenwood's novels featuring author John Pilate, the titular hero has gone to Key West to finish writing his memoir.

While out minding his own business one night at dinner, he witnesses a murder ... and his peaceful time in Florida suddenly becomes one round of accidental criminal involvement after another.

Throw in his alter-ego, Simon the Rat, constantly talking to him, and it's a constant round of adventure.

This book has so many twists and turns that it's almost impo

After reading Pilate's Cross (John Pilate Mysteries) I had to pick up Mr. Greenwood's newest creation. All I can say is "John Pilate does it again!" He's in Key West this time, a place I now want to visit after reading this book. It sounds like an absolute hoot!

What the author does successfully is create an atmosphere of intrigue, adventure, AND it's a lot of fun being there with his cast of characters. Just when you think, "how are they going to get out of this mess?" A plan is devised, and the
