Gizmo is a series of carefully organized interrelated poems complete with recurring characters and a common rural setting.

From “Heart Massage” comes a disturbing facet of small-town life:

....She knows if you go broke
you’ll end up living with her, and you terrify her.

What makes Gizmo remarkable is Stansberger’s avoidance of melodrama when talking about subjects which are otherwise replete with sentimentality. From “Padlocks” where domestic abuse is implied:

“How can you stay with a man you hate?
