This was an excellent debut novel which I enjoyed thoroughly. The book starts in 4th gear and the author keeps his foot on the gas throughout. I was gripped to see how the various sub plots would knit together and the author achieved this commendably. It is clear that the author has in-depth knowledge not only in law but also in the fields of aviation, mountaineering, chess, astronomy and sailing and he uses this knowledge to inform his imagery and his plot in a fascinating way.

The protagonist J...more

Clive Hindle has found a way to combine words in a way which dazzles the mind and stretches one’s imagination. I can’t say that I have read a book where I was constantly stopping to think “how did he come up with that?”

The Eighth Square is not a book to be taken lightly or to be read in a single sitting. The story is intense as it follows Jack Lauder through a web of mystery and secrecy as he searches for the truth. Hindle is a master at letting us into Jack’s thoughts and I could feel his empa...more

I used to be a Grisham fan, but after reading The Broker where learning Italian and drinking coffee were all that seemed to go on, I gave on on the guy.

Hindle writes legal thrillers with far more action that Grisham but with the attention to detail and the legal knowledge that give a thriller that edge of authenticity - you get the feeling that he draws from personal experience and that is great for a reader as you feel you are a party to a secret.

The author blends his knowledge of climbing, che...more

I was hooked in from the first two pages and that does not happens to me often. The opening was atmospheric, intriguing and I felt I had a grip of the characters from the start.

On one level the plot rushes along quite linearly but you have to concentrate as there is another more lateral branch of the plot running alongside. The main character Jack is believable, likable and somewhat sympathetic.

Having been to the areas mentioned, I do love the way the author captured the wild, windy magic of the...more

A terrific story and thrilling plot. Jack Lauder, a lawyer, is left reeling from the loss of his beloved wife, in a mountaineering accident; a traumatic experience because her body was never recovered. When Jack is asked to inventory an old friend’s estate, he agrees hoping this may assuage his mind. Instead he is plunged into a terrifying adventure, plagued by dreams and visions of Rachel at every turn, until he fears he is on the verge of losing his mind.

A convincing, exciting tale where Jack...more

The Eighth Square begins with Jack Lauder's return to his legal practice. He is almost immediately commissioned to handle the post-humorous estate of an estranged acquaintance. From the very beginning this strikes him as strange and the impression is only amplified as the story progresses. It is pretty clear that Jack is wrapped up in something bigger than himself. The story progresses quickly as he tries desperately to extricate himself.

I liked the book. It moved along steadily, had some inter...more

I believe that the desire to write first came to me in my teens. When I was at university I intended to become a poet because of the influence of Basil Bunting.

I became a prose writer in my 20's and I had some some ideas for complicated plots but in those days they were too complicated to bring to to a proper conclusion. I still have those original books and I want to go back to them. I still hav...more
