In this spectacularly original picture book, the story mirrors an origami activity: As a pig-tailed pirate girl travels through mountains, valleys, a cave and finally by sea to reach the treasure her grandfather has hidden for her, imaginative illustrations show different incarnations of a single folded sheet of paper within the scenes. Best of all, clear instructions at t...more

I've always loved origami, and the idea for basing a story around the folds for a simple origami shape intrigued me. While I still like the idea and can see how hearing or reading the story might guide origami novices in making the right folds, the story itself lacked appeal for me. I enjoyed the story up until the lightning strike and shark attack, but after that, I lost interest. Finding a pirate t-shirt as treasure didn't seem that appealing to me. The paper would have to be mighty big in ord...more

This was a pretty fun read. The story was nice and the art is just awesome. The idea to make it a story to help a kid remember how to make origami is kind of cool. What I didn't like is that it's a long way to go just to get a torn up piece of paper! It was kind of fun to build it, but I couldn't do it without the instructions in the back, even though the story is supposed to be instructions itself. Maybe after practicing a lot I could remember how to do it, but I don't really want to! For a kid...more

For older kids. Once upon a time, there was a pirate girl who, like her pirate grandfather, sailed the seven seas. One day, she received an unusual letter from him and a treasure map. Will the pirate girl succeed in her quest to claim the mysterious booty her grandfather has left for her? And is that the only discovery awaiting her on the journey? A creative combination of paper folding how to and adventure story.

Every stage of the girl's trip, starting with the letter for grandpa are used for the origami activity, which can be done along with the story.
When a pirate girl receives a letter with a map from her pirate grandfather she sets out on a voyage up a mountain, down a valley, through a cave, and over the sea to find his treasure, in a book with an origami activity to accompany the text.

it's a great story with fun filled adventure. Fun landscapes and interesting characters. It also provides kids with a how to retell the story in origami.(with a step by step easy to follow diagrams)
I'd totally recommend reading this to kids while folding/orgigami to go along with the story!

An alternate version of the Captain's Hat fold-and-tell. I like how the illustrations/graphics incorporate the origami forms into the scenery.
Donalyn
An entire book designed around an origami trick-- not enough to build a narrative. I did like graphic novel titles hidden on the girl's bookcase.

I was not in love with the book. I like the origami directions in the back. I prefer to tell the story with paper instead of the book.
