On a six-mile hike on the Maine-New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail, nine-year-old Trisha McFarland quickly tires of the bickering between her older brother, Pete, and her recently divorced mother. But when she wanders off by herself, and then tries to catch up by attempting a shortcut, she becomes lost in a wilderness maze full of peril and terror.
As night falls, Trisha has only her ingenuity as a defense against the elements, and only her courage and faith to withstand her mounting...more

I read a lot of Stephen King in middle school. I wanted to see how he holds up to present day scrutiny. The answer--not so much. I think it's funny that friendly critics of King claim he masterfully captures the voice of young or adolescent characters--because he completely fails in this one, and since the child in question was the same age as me in the year the novel is set, I should know. She speaks in what seems to be a tapestry of cheesy expressions she knows from her parents, with none of h...more

Everyone - especially girls!
I love this book. It's one of my favorites of all time. I love Stephen King to begin with, but I think any one - even people who don't like his style or genre typically - would like this book. It's a great, simple story about the power of the human will to survive and the strength of the human spirit - it's bravery, humor, resilience and ingenuity - in the face of great obstacles. It is really a fantastic book for anyone who has, or is, going through a tough time. The plot is very simple - a you...more

Karen Allen suggested I read this book, since I have liked Stephen King in the past but avoid his current novels, which are too horror-filled for me. She said I'd probably like this one of his, and she was so right. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is really marvelous! I loved it. It's a very simple story, about a nine-year-old girl who starts out on a hike along the Appalachian Trail with her recently divorced mom and brother but gets separated and then lost in the woods. First of all, I need to point out that this book is *nothing* like the standard King lineup. Its a refreshing change of pace for his Constant Reader.
Strangely enough, I think Stephen King felt the same way. There's a passion in the lines of this one that almost makes the words glow on the page.
If I were to recommend a Stephen King book to a "fraidy cat" this would be the one. Its not scary, not even really creepy, although it does have some fairly tense scenes.

When nine-year-old Patricia McFarland wanders off the path that she is hiking on with her mother and brother in order to go to the bathroom, she becomes incredibly lost. Now, with very little food, energy, and sanity, she turns to her one and only link to the human world... her AM/FM walkman which is broadcasting the games of her beloved Boston Red Sox with closing pitcher Tom Gordon. Very soon, she begins to see Tom walking with her protecting her from the dangers of the woods in which she is l...more

Također, krasi ga netipično sretan za...more

This was my first experience reading a Stephen King book. And I read it because of, once again, my love of baseball (Mom gave this book to me one year as a gift). It is summer and the Cubs are in first place, so books with baseball themes have been coming to mind for me! This is a great read. Not too scary, but definitely suspenseful and if you like baseball, you'll appreciate the way the chapters are organized and all the baseball references. And if you loved baseball as a tween girl, you'...more

Oddly, I felt this story could've survived without the actual supernatural element added to it. It could easily have been passed off as psychology without the final confrontation and variety of dead animals and I don't believe it would have lost anything. Seeing Trisha transform from a little girl to a survivor is quite fascinating and well done. I was actually caught by surprise when the hunter appeared in the chapter "Bottom of the Ninth" despite several times it being mentioned that...more

I read this on a flight from RDU-Detroit. I flew over for my grandma's funeral and wanted a quick book to take my mind away from the realization that I was flying ValueJet/AirTran.
This was perfect. Short, simple, engaging. Girl gets lost and has to survive. Oh, and she wakes up one morning to find a disemboweled animal sitting in front of her. The stalking creature was pretty spooky, I must admit.

On a six mile hike Trisha, Pete and their mom where all walking and Trisha had to go to the bathroom so she walked off the trail, but when she tried to find her way back. She got lost.
Now what ? Is she going to die ?
She ends up walking 9 miles off the trail within a few days.
She is running low on food.
She is getting really sick of all the bug bits.
The ground is really muddy.
Will she ever find her way back home ?

I did really like this book. It was not what I would have ever expected from Stephen King so I was very surprised. The story is about a 9 year old who wanders off the trail and gets lost in the woods. The story is about how she survives alone and was really very interesting.
My only problem was that she seemed to be to rational and too mature for a 9 year old. Of course, I don't really know 9 year old mentality too well so maybe he wrote her very well, I just kept thinking that she was just ...more

Sometimes life is just puppy shit. This book was very intense. It is the story of a nine year old girl who gets lost in the woods while hiking with her family. This story is the epitome of man vs. nature and man vs. self conflicts. The heroine of the story is in love with a baseball player and the book parallels a game. You grow to admire this amazing little girl and she shows strenghth and courage above and beyond what most people could give. If you enjoy newly created curse words, this b...more

This is possibly my favorite book by Stephen King. I have read it several times, and my 10 year old is in the process of reading it also. This is a great story without the usual Stephen King weirdness (which I like in all other books) so it is appropriate for anyone to read. I love survival stories, so this was right up my alley. It is probably the book that got me started on reading the "survival" genre lately, although that may have been "Hatchet" when I was younger.

The single best novel I've ever read about how it feels to be lost in deep woods - King outdid himself in this one, without overdoing it. There's a bit of unnecessary supernatural stuff late in the book, but it's understandable, given the physical stress of the central character. It brought back more youthful terrors than I wanted to remember, kinda like dreams of being sucked under by heavy waves...he really is a good storyteller, even when he's mass-marketed.

I liked this one. It was a true survivor/horror story. I liked that Trisha imagines Tom Gordon was actually there with her. It gave the story more depth and interest. I also think that the parts about her father was not needed, as the girl only needed Tom Gordon by her side than her father. It was kind of weird when Stephen King makes ordinary "getting lost in the forest thing and seeing a dead deer" plot so scary. The God of Death was actually just one fat bear.

Was it a moderately entertaining telling of the "lost in the woods" tale. Sure. Did King pepper the piece with his distinct brand of thoughtful prose and intriguing insight? Yeah. Does the story hold up against his other works in terms of excitement and originality? Not really. Did I get the sense that King was trying to create myth and legacy around a home-town team. I did. Does the fact that the Sox suck and the Yanks rule effect my review? Barely.

So, this was the first horror novel I ever read. I thought it was pretty good. I feel like Steven King did a good job of capturing the way a young child would feel being lost in the woods. Especially the way that they would be startled by every little sound. The thing with the three different gods was interesting if not a little weird and I found myself wondering whether she was imagining them or if they were really there. Overall a pretty good book.

I didn't care for this when I read it, but that's probably because I don't understand or like baseball. "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" is about a girl who gets lost in the woods while hiking with her family. She wanders around, listening to baseball games on her walkman and thinking about baseball while trying to figure out how to get out of the woods.
Sidenote: I do love the Boston Red Sox, but I'm from Boston, where it's illegal not to love them.
