What a surprising book. I started this book with no expectations other than the description. The first part of the book was slow moving and not all that eventful. I was afraid that I would lose interest and have to stop reading it. However, by about 1/3 of the way through, the story picked up and I became engaged in the story and what was occurring. I must say, that the paranormal genre is not my forte, however Tegan and Ethan quickly became a favorite!! Tegan's blood literally is something special and a mytery as to why. It is hard to tell a vampire story these days and manage to bring something unique to the tale, indeed a lot of the supernatural worlds has now been heavily covered in many variations. But I’m still surprised at what new angles new authors can bring and this book is definitely one of them. The concept of Tegan being special but without any particular powers is still relatively rare in a genre that has legions of super-powered protagonists. Her power puts her at risk far more than it benefits her.

We have a world that has magic and vampires – and dhampires which could always do more exploration. As well as an interesting take on where the lines are drawn and how the politics lie. It’s also interesting to see vampire Slayers fully integrated into the supernatural world rather than at war with the entirety of it. I also quite like the nuance of the Slayers. We don’t see vampire hunters as evil monsters persecuting the poor misunderstood vampies, but nor do we see them as righteous crusaders battling out to save humanity either – similarly with the vampires. They’re neither poor misunderstood, sad angsty creatures (in fact, there was no vampire angst at all!) but nor are the unabashed monsters. It also seems to have an interesting magic system with actual rituals and rules being carefully planned out rather than just hand-waving, magic words – ta-da shinies!

Hands down, this is my favourite book so far this year. Tegan’s voice grabbed me from the first page and I couldn’t stop reading.

This novel is told in the present tense, something I usually dislike, but somehow it worked for me in Tegan’s Blood. When we first meet her, Tegan is an emotional mess. Her boyfriend’s suicide a couple of months ago has rendered her a prisoner in her own apartment. She is afraid to go outside, drinks too much, and is generally not looking after her physical or emotional wellbeing. Her good friend Nicky determines that enough is enough, and forces her out on a girls’ night to the club Crimson, a Goth-type vampire bar. The vampire persona is not just a theme; the place is run by Ethan Cristescu “a beautiful bastard” in Tegan’s words, and a powerful vamp of Romanian heritage, naturally. He quickly sets his sights on her, and not unlike Sookie Stackhouse from the Charlaine Harris books, Tegan suddenly finds herself immersed in the deadly world of vampire politics.

The setting is Tribane, a city divided by the Hawthorne River; I’m guessing this is a fictional place located in England given the references to Tesco and pounds. I loved Tegan’s dark sense of humour and the major flirting and innuendos going on between her and Ethan. Tegan’s down-to-earth nature and normality reeled me in straight away, and I sped through the novel. She’s quite self-deprecating and unaware of what a cool woman she is. She’s also brazen in her own way, like how she slyly nabs the job at the occult shop, Indigo. I could easily relate to Tegan and laughed at how similar our Saturday nights are: queuing to get into a club, having the girls behind her bitch when her friends skip the queue, fumbling in her bag to find her passport for the bouncers, ordering an unclassy alcopop like Bacardi Breezer at the bar… That’s my basic Saturday night! If all that wasn’t enough to make me love this book, Buffy gets an entire chapter named after her. What Would Buffy do?

And of course, no paranormal romance read would be worth much without a hot male lead. Ethan is strong and commanding, patient but authoritative, and he meets his match in Tegan. There’s also wicked imagery running through this novel. The images of the house rising out of the ground on Ridley Island, and the carnival lit up at night with all the rides going but no one on them, were both vivid and disturbing. I did notice a few slight errors in the text, but they didn’t take away from the beauty of this book which I cannot recommend enough.
Tegan’s Blood is the first novel of 2012 that I have absolutely loved. Bring on part two: Tegan’s Return. (less)

To be honest, I was hooked from the very first pages...I loved the atmosphere, story and writing of this novel! A beautiful dive into a fantasy world punctued by anxiety, dreams, romance seasoned with a great dose of magic and a touch of super-powers. A mixture accurately tuned!

I really enjoyed this book, but it wasn’t gripping. I like Tegan as a character and as the narrator; she is believable and does a good job of getting the reader to try to understand her. Some of the other characters are well developed and others seem a little flat, but it worked. In my opinion the world building could have been worked on a bit because it felt a little shoddy at some points.

My Thoughts
You know when you pick up a novel and are so captivated that you stay up all night until it’s read, well Tegan’s Blood is one of those novels. I read it in one sitting. It’s so well written and expertly delivered that it’s impossible to stop once you start. When I cooked dinner, I had my Kindle read it to me (even with that awful monotone voice). When my eyes got tired, I did the same. I just could not put it down!

It took awhile for me to get used to the story being told in present tense - almost as though Tegan was writing in her diary...but in present tense. Anyway, you can see how much that tripped me out. Okay, moving on:

Story
The plot intrigued me. The overall pacing moves pretty quickly, and it wasn't until the end that I realized this entire story takes place in only a few days (a week, maybe?). I was really drawn in by the story and kept thinking about it when I wasn't reading...though this book is...more It took awhile for me to get used to the story being told in present tense - almost as though Tegan was writing in her diary...but in present tense. Anyway, you can see how much that tripped me out. Okay, moving on:

Story
The plot intrigued me. The overall pacing moves pretty quickly, and it wasn't until the end that I realized this entire story takes place in only a few days (a week, maybe?). I was really drawn in by the story and kept thinking about it when I wasn't reading...though this book isn't that long and took me about 3 sittings (across 2 days).

Characters
There's only really a handful of characters you need/get to know, but each one of them brings something different to the table. Most characters, including the heroine of the story, are quite mysterious and have very little (to no) background story, but what you are given is enough to get you by. In general the characters are all realistic, though not necessarily believable. What exactly does that mean? Well, I found the characters pretty much be relatable - they're confused, confusing, conflicted, and you don't really know why they do what they're doing. That said, sometimes I found their actions, or lack thereof, to be a little...out of character (as the saying goes). Perhaps that is a lot of vampire lore muddling my thoughts, but certain characters definitely behaved differently that one would think.

- Tegan: I liked her. She was fairly honest about herself, and found herself completely entangled in a world she never knew about. (This next sentence may contain a SPOILER, skip to the next character if you want to avoid this) What I didn't like about her is how she doesn't really seem to thank or appreciate Nicky.
- Nicky: What a great friend! She sort of fades out as the story progresses, but overall a nice gal indeed.
- Ethan: what an enigma. A little too much of one, IMHO. I can't figure out how I feel about him, which I suppose is a great sign of how good this writer is, as that's exactly how Tegan feels!
- Rita: so fiesty! I really liked her and her whole story (which is funny that you learn the most about her even though she is a "side character").

Setting
Things are described fairly well, and it's not really necessary to remember a whole lot (like specific names), so that was nice. Tegan does a bit of moving around the different parts of the city, but again not a big deal.

So, would I recommend this book? Yes. It contains a bit of romance, lots of vampire stuff, some witch/warlock/sorcerer talk, some funny moments, and overall character growth. Nice for all you paranormal fans like me :). Not too much vulgarity and no overboard violence. Plus I really liked the chapter titles. I'd definitely like to read the sequel!(less)

I could talk about this book for a while, so bear with me. Tegan’s Blood is nothing short of wonderful. It's a unique vampire novel that crosses a lot of literary genres, and I'm so glad I read it.

One of the greatest draws in the book is Tegan herself. First of all, that’s the coolest name I’ve heard in a while. As someone who has the same name as half of Henry VIII’s wives, I’m always drawn to people with lovely and interesting names. It really fits her personality in that it’s a bit mysteriou...more I could talk about this book for a while, so bear with me. Tegan’s Blood is nothing short of wonderful. It's a unique vampire novel that crosses a lot of literary genres, and I'm so glad I read it.

One of the greatest draws in the book is Tegan herself. First of all, that’s the coolest name I’ve heard in a while. As someone who has the same name as half of Henry VIII’s wives, I’m always drawn to people with lovely and interesting names. It really fits her personality in that it’s a bit mysterious but inexplicably beautiful. Tegan has recently dealt with a tragedy and she’s only starting to put back together the pieces of her life that fell apart. I was glad that Cosway referred back to this issue throughout the novel. So many times female characters are reeling from a loss and suddenly forget everything that happened when they meet a new hottie love interest. I really felt for her and could not imagine dealing with such a tragedy myself. This level of realism really carried the story within the paranormal context.

Tegan’s far from being a damsel in distress, however. Despite her woes, Tegan approaches life with a sardonic sensibility that is refreshing in a paranormal novel. The norm with vampire novels (thanks to an obscure little gem called Twilight) is that the female protagonist is completely weak to her male love interest and she accepts his vampire-y ways, no questions asked. I liked the fact that Tegan was skeptical throughout the novel, and at times, even a bit disgusted. Not once did I roll my eyes at her or say, “Seriously? What are you doing? Girl, please.” Despite her vulnerability, she’s a girl who thinks through her situation and tries to be logical about the paranormal elements that occur around her. In one scene, she’s forced into a Wiccan ceremony, where she sits there a sort of wonders, what the heck are these people doing? I laughed out loud and loved it, because that’s how a normal girl should act in a situation like that.

Ethan, the love interest, is super sexy and that she can resist him on any level is shocking to me. He says all the things that you want a guy to say to you. At the same time, their relationship is surprisingly healthy. As much as he wants to be manly and constantly protect her, Tegan keeps him from being controlling and dominating. He is just as drawn to her as she is to him, and their relationship is one that I’m willing to root for. Supporting characters stand on their own and are unique, offbeat individuals that are anything but clichéd. I especially liked Rita, although I was ready to dislike her when she first appeared. But the characters kept me guessing and it was nice that as a reader, I was hesitant to trust many of them because the stakes were so high in the novel. To me, that’s a sign of carefully crafted relationships between the characters in the novel, some of which go back long before the temporal confines of Tegan’s story.

The story line itself is complex. Tegan’s city is teeming with secrets and hidden layers, and is nice complement to Tegan herself. Like Tribane, Tegan has mysterious qualities, most of which she cannot explain. These elements unfold throughout the novel and keep things interesting without relying on action, violence, or unnecessary bloodshed. There is some closure towards the end of the novel, but things are certainly left open and there is unfinished business that will surely be addressed in the sequel.

All this aside, my last comment is that this book is just simply well-written. That’s an important factor. Cosway is a fantastic writer and she could probably make the phone book sound dark, mysterious, dangerous, and sexy. The book is wonderfully indulgent and leaves mystery and intrigue in all the right places.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes vampires, magic, strong female heroines, and dark urban tales. It’s a great read.

L.H. Cosway sent this book quite a while ago an honest review. I finally got around to reading it. I waited because,honestly, I am so tired of vampire stories. When I first got this book, I wasn’t sure if I would like it. I do enjoy reading about Vampires but only recently I have been looking for something different, but I thought I would give another vampire romance a go. I started reading it but left it for couple of weeks not getting into the story. However, I picked it up again being bored at work. The main character Tegan just gone through an emotional meltdown after finding her boyfriend dead in her bathroom. She hasn’t left the house for a while not able to cope with the trauma. However, when she finally goes out and tries to enjoy her time with friends in the local nightclub something else happens. In the nightclub, she meets Ethan he won’t leave her alone after discovering that she is immune to his charms. Everything would be perfect if Ethan were a human, but he is a vampire. Tegan not only catches the interest of Ethan but also few other magical individuals. Despite the circle of new ‘fans’ she gets close to Ethan, who is trying to protect her, but she fights back. Tegan does not want to be dominated and controlled. She manages to find a job and sort her life out independently.

The plot of the novel is complex and it’s based on Tegan and her precious blood that her mother had hidden casting a spell when Tegan was a toddler. The first half of the novel was engaging and made me turn the page after page, but the second half was slightly confusing pushing aside the romance. I wanted to read more about Tegan and Ethan’s relationship instead I was thrown directly into the battle between vampires and slayers.

I did like the characters, although I thought that I wouldn’t like Rita that annoyed me in the beginning but further in the novel her personality evolved. Ethan is corky and aims to bring the main character out of the darkness.

It’s difficult to present the new unique vampire story as there are so many books out that repeat the similar pattern of paranormal romance, but the author managed to pull off the new interesting plot with original character that the reader I can relate to. There is a new idea of magical rituals that flows well with vampires and other paranormal creatures within the story. I can highly recommend this book to all the lover of paranormal romance or anyone who enjoys reading about vampires.

I can't remember the last time I read such a spineless, defeated, and annoying main character. She spouts antagonistic tough talk and then backs it up by letting every stranger in the vicinity walk all over her and her common sense past the point of a death wish.

I can't remember the last time I read such a spineless, defeated, and annoying main character. She spouts antagonistic tough talk and then backs it up by letting every stranger in the vicinity walk all over her and her common sense past the point of a death wish.

In the very first chapter, Tegan is cornered by three creepy people in an alley behind a club. They intimidate and threaten her and demand to know her name and address. She promptly cries and asks them if she's allowed to go now. (Oh yeah, that'll work.) They demand her name and she goes through her tough routine of "No way, I'll never tell you!" Then they ask her nicely and... she tells them. Next, one of the creepsters insists he will drive her home so he can learn her address. Once again she's all, "That will never happen! I'd die first! Blah blah blah!" (I'm paraphrasing.) Of course two minutes later she's given in because they just seem so insistent, and well it would just be easiest this way, and she really does want to get home, and besides Mr. Creepy is hawt. So she gets in his car alone, lets him drive her home, and then invites him inside!! This girl is a danger to herself and others. And my psyche.

Here's a real quote from later on in the story that nicely illustrates her character. This is of course right after she's told the vampires that she doesn't need them because she's Super Duper Tough Girl, and then a riot breaks out:

"I try to get up but the pain in the left side of my ribs is a killer, and I was never one to handle pain well. The slightest twinge and I’m out for the count. I need help, even one of the vampires would do. Hell, I’d even accept Marcel at this point. I hadn’t realized it until this moment, but as I peer down at my hands I notice that they are shaking. A human riot is frightening enough, but a supernatural one? Well that’s just a little past my capability level."

I'm afraid most things are past her capability level. She relies on her inherent "specialness" instead of any skill or intelligence of her own. And the few times in the story where events actually call for her to be diplomatic and conciliatory, those are the times, for some reason, that she chooses to stick to her guns and be rude and histrionic and demanding! I just couldn't connect with any manifestation of her bipolar character.

And on a writing mechanics note, the run-on sentences were pervasive to the point of being majorly distracting.(less)

What a fantastic storyline and very well executed! The writing is almost flawless but of such an excellent quality that you are quite happy to overlook the few grammatical errors that are present.

This book gripped me from start to finish and definitely left me wanting more. There are so many characters in this book that you feel for and some that you take an instant dislike to - which is not always an easy thing to accomplish for an author.

The first book starts off with Teagan trying to overcome the loss of someone that was close to her.
The author does a very good job with portraying the main character's, confusion and sadness. In this book the reader sees the main character, Teagan, trying to come to terms with her current emotional state and new found information about her self.

I decided to start reading this one after reading, Painted Faces, by this author. It's like night and day and I don't even know if I'll be continuing with this series. The heroine is very selfish and is more concerned with herself than anything else most of the time. This book started out great but the second half seemed rushed. The main character, Tegan, does things that make no sense in the context of what we know in the story. The final action showdown is more "tell" than "show" and seems anti climactic. The book could also benefit from a good proof reading. Good but not great. Perhaps lacking a little in depth, how Tegan can progress from housebound emotional incompetent to falling for Ethan is beyond me. Maybe if the time frames were different (i.e. longer between the tragedy of the ex and the finding of Ethan) I wouldn't find this such an issue. Tied with this was my issue with Tegan's commitment to Nikki, true friendships are give and take - I saw a lot of take and no give.

I will possibly have a look at Book 2, but not in a hurry.

i wasn't quite sure about this book when i first started reading it but it quickly became one that i couldn't put down! i read pretty quickly but this one was by far my fastest read yet. i wanted to know what was going to happen & my stomach was in knots. i found myself frequently holding my breath while turning the pages, anxious to find out what was going to happen next. i got this for free for my kindle & HAD to buy the 2nd book...which i loved just as much as this one.

I saw this book on a blog it was recommended. I hadn't heard of the author so I checked the book out and I loved it. Hope to read more about the series. I like the to main male characters.Finn & Ethan I want them both lol.I think tegan has a hard choice ahead of her.End the end I bet she picks Ethan over Finn.If that happens I hope Finn gets a lover to.....O I loved the shapeshifter Ira hope to finally hear more from his character.

this book caught me off guard! it was way more than What I expected. Tegan was a considerate girl and she put her friends safety first. when she starts to unravel more about the past I am shocked! her life is so complicated and the fact that she worries more about others than herself it brave. Ethan is just so egotistic it's amusing but he really cares for Tegan's and That makes up for it. I can't wait to read the sequel!!!!

This book has instantly become a favorite of mine. I was hooked from the very start. There was just enough mystery & intrigue to keep me on edge & as the mysteries unfolded all I wanted was MORE!! This story is unique with vampires, dhampirs, witches, warlocks, & slayers. And they ALL WANT Tegan!! What's a girl to do when she's torn between love, revenge, & freedom? Love it!! Can't wait to finish this this series. :)

I loved this book it was better than I excepted it to be. I stayed up late reading it and woke up early to finish it. I love Tegan lived a paranormal world at many times acted like a normal girl would. My heart broke for her. i wanted to her take her pain away . And yes I'm in love with Ethan, he's perfect.This book really does have it all. I can't wait to read the next one.

I agree with someone that said the first half is better than the second half. I read every word of the first half and then something started falling flat and I just skimmed the second half.

For that, I'll give it three stars.

And if that dude ever came into my bed without my consent, heads would roll.
