I’ve read plenty of books. Of those books, about 90% have paranormal elements to them. Because the majority of my books are paranormal books, you have repeat supernatural creatures. By far, the most often used supernatural creature in my book collection is....drum-roll please..... the werewolf. I know, you were thinking vampire. You were wrong.

Fractured Moon - 3.5 stars

Paranormal Romance is one of my guilty pleasures. I’ve always been a sucker for the mated pair/soul mate story. There’s something very primal about the mate bond and when werewolves are involved…I’ve got to read it.

Fractured Moon by debut author E.R. Pierce surprised me. I found myself lost in the story. This isn’t a caveman style “you’re my soul mate” story. No, it was about a couple that took the time to acknowledge their attraction and get to know each other first.

I'm always up for a good werewolf story and the synopsis for this one had promise so when the price dropped, I decided to give it a try. I downloaded a sample and immediately realized that the grammar and writing quality was pretty bad, but the story still sounded interesting so I went ahead and purchased it, first, because I was interested in the story, second, because I was curious to see if the writing would improve. We meet her whilst she’s standing backstage at her brother’s bar waiting to be called out for a bachelorette auction that her best friend, Astrid (or Az for short) has roped her into participating in. Aurelia is somewhat of an anomaly among werewolves – able to partially change her features and grow claws but not able to complete a complete shift into wolf form. This ‘defect’ makes her an outsider in her community and – despite their best efforts at being supportive – her family too. Depite this (or maybe because of it) Aurelia is a strong and capable heroine. She’s an incredibly smart, brave and passionate woman.

One year after the bachelorette auction, Aurelia comes face to face (quite literally as he tackles her to the floor of Az’s tattoo parlor) with Ceithin Starkley – a werewolf visiting the area on a business opportunity with Aurelia’s father. From the moment they meet they share incredible sexual tention – I could almost see the sparks flying! – but Ceithin sees himself as a little bit oldfashioned. He won’t cheat. Just Aurelia’s luck to meet the man who may be her fated mate and him be involved in a relationship with another woman. I admired Ceithin for that. I have to admit I get slightly annoyed when just because someone meets their fated mate – all rules and manners fly out the window.

I also relished in the chanced to see Aurelia jealous – and play a little dirty!

Just because Ceithin is in a relationship and trying to fight his werewolf nature and be faithful to his girlfriend doesn’t mean that Aurelia isn’t going to make a play for her potential mate! Her playful, sensual and jealous side made itself known when she was in the club. I didn’t expect it from her but it made me like her more. And made me realize that she wasn’t going to let circumstances stand between her and what she wanted in life. Her lack of shifting ability weighs heavily upon her and I was glad for her to see that she wasn’t going to give up. And this is fiction and a story of true mates! – so I don’t feel bad at all rooting for a woman trying to steal another woman’s boyfriend.

Ceithin unable and unwilling to ignore his desire for Aurelia, breaks up with his girlfriend and starts to court Aurelia. I loved the courting. Ever since I was 12 years old and read Jane Austen’s Persuasion for the first time, I’ve loved letters in novels. And whilst Ceithin’s emails weren’t quite as formal as Captain Wentworth’s, I loved them. He’s blunt and slightly awkward but I felt it was honest and that in itself was beautiful. Despite the chemistry and sexual tension between them – Ceithin and Aurelia got to know each other. The sex – when it happened – was hot but, for me, what made it ever better and that bit more intense was that the characters had fallen in love. This isn’t a story of instant love for no reason – these two knew each other. They knew their faults and their good qualities and genuinely cared for the other.

In addition to the romance plot, Aurelia has someone tormenting her with no apparent reason. Her tires are slashed and her house ransacked. Throw in some nearly incapacitating and blinding headaches

As the story goes on we get to find out more about why Aurelia can’t shift, her special mental bond with her brother, Ville. I thought it was an inventive and creative plot. I really enjoyed how everything unfolded. Many questions I had early in the novel were answered and I was satisfied with the ending. There was a shift in the point-of-view for a few chapters that I didn’t really like. I understand why it was necessary but the main reason why I liked this book was Aurelia’s sassiness, her cheekiness and how at times she mentally berated herself. She was a fantastic narrator. I missed that when we switched to Ceithin’s POV.

I really enjoyed reading this book. There is a lot to love about the characters and the storyline. It was interesting and sexy and highly enjoyable.(less)

Aurelia is a werewolf...well kinda. See when she was little and the rest of her siblings were able to shift she couldn't. All grown up now and long since given up on ever being able to fully shift in wolf form, she has learned to deal with all the snide comments and the dirty looks. She's also come to accept that she will probably never have a mate of her own. I mean who wants a mate that can't actually shift?

My Review: This was a middle of the road book for me, it had some great high points but also some low points. I will start first with what fell a little flat for me; I really did not like Aura at all. I would have thought I would love her as a main character, she has a bookstore and does a kids reading hour! But throughout the book it was said how strong she was mentally, but all I saw were breakdowns, until the end. I did however like Ceithin, and Aura's brothers. I also loved the building that Aura designed, it sounds like a fantastic retreat. The story line is also great with some surprising twists and a bad guy you would have never expected! It was a great story all in all, I just wasn't a fan of Aura. It does leave you with an open door and a need to read the next book.(less)

Things start to change when Ceithin Starkley comes into town to meet with her father for business. Ceithin’s wolf immediately scents Aurelia and can’t let go. Aurelia doesn’t know what to think of Ceithin who she finds very attractive but wary all the same. When someone slashes her tires and then breaks into her apartment, Aurelia needs her friends and her family to figure out what is going on.

I have mixed feelings about Fractured Moon. I very much enjoyed Aurelia’s voice. She is a likable heroine who has a good mix of snark and warmth. I liked that she has a close knit family, and the scenes with her brothers are well done. I truly felt her loneliness and despair at not only fitting in with the other wolves, but just being an outcast and alone in life.

However, this book has a very slow start. It was very hard to figure out what the conflict was going to be or where this book was headed for quite some time. I don’t think Ceithin truly comes into the story until the 25% mark. Each scene seemed to drag on for so long, and many scenes seemed more filler than actually moving the story along. I felt like bouncing in my chair, impatient to get the story moving.

Once Ceithin enters the picture, I felt like he and Aurelia go from strangers to you may be my true-mate way too quickly. I wanted a little more sexual tension and buildup to their relationship.

And while scenes were too long, the villain doesn’t get enough page time to make him a viable threat in the reader’s eye. All of that seemed to be really rushed. While almost all of this story is told in Aurelia’s point of view, at the 85% mark it abruptly changes to Ceithin’s point of view which was really confusing until it again changes back to Aurelia’s to end the story.

So while I think the core of this story is good, and the author gives us likable and interesting characters, the flow and structure of this book leaves something to be desired.

I had this book for a while but i didn't realize it was werewolf one till now.
Fractured Moon is story of Aura who is an outcast in her community as she can't shift into her wolf form and always face the snickers and insults yet she is strong,independent,all worth a women can be ..only if can find her true mate ..can she?
And then she meet Ceithin and the rest is history..they try to connect with eachother and explore their bonds..but something bad is stalking Aura and she is in trouble..why can't...more

I liked the book a lot, which says a lot because I don't particularly enjoy first-person writings. I generally won't read them, but I liked Aurelia and I liked Ceithin.

The plot was excellent, and I liked the less 'hop instantly in bed' concept of their courtship. Just a personal preference thing.

Admittedly, this isn't erotica-with-almost-a-plot... why I liked it. And the plot was good. :)

I have to admit- I haven't read that many werewolf books, so I'm not that well versed in werewolf lore. I'm familiar with the fated-to-be-mated thing, but I've never read a story based on it. It was interesting to read about the way Aurelia and Ceithin's relationship would progress. From the moment they meet, there is most certainly an undeniable chemistry between the two.
