The Galvanic Century series is set in an alternate steampunk world where the reign of Queen Victoria has extended well into the early 20th century. As the world edges inexorably towards a World War that few can even begin to anticipate, brave men and women must contend with airship pirates, clockwork assassins, galvanic monsters, and anarchist madmen.

Well, this is the second short story/book I have read by Michael Coorlim and it is the first Barlteby and James story that I have read. The other story I read was Sky Pirates Over London which was the first story in the Chronicles of a Gentlewoman and I must say that Maiden Voyage was just as good as Sky Pirates. I really, really enjoyed them both; it must be something to do with the steampunk genre and Victorian era setting! The dialogue was just awesome and the characters were very ...more

"Maiden Voyage of the Rio Grande" is, I believe, the second story in the Bartleby and James Adventure series. Much like the first story, And They Called Her Spider (A Bartleby and James Adventure), it contains a good mystery, fantastic writing, an interesting steampunk setting, and a delightfully clever detective duo.

Unfortunately, however, I found "Maiden Voyage of the Rio

While this is technically Book 2, and I thought I had listened to Book 1 by listening to Sky Pirates Over London (which is actually Book 5), it stands alone just fine. So, don’t shy away from picking it up if you run across it. I really enjoyed the steampunk background, and on an airship. I found this book to be more tightly written than Sky Pirates Over London, perhaps because it all takes place in one location. Michael Coorlim filled this novelette with plenty of action, which I enjoyed seeing ...more

I received this as part of the LibraryThing Member Giveaways program.

Another great story in the Bartleby and James adventures. This time, our introverted engineer (James) is accused of murder! Our detecting consultants are enjoying time on an airship the size of a luxury hotel when James finds the body of the airship's engineer. Before he spends too much time in the brig, Bartleby rescues him, asserting their skill in solving crimes, and the airship captain quickly lets the duo get to doing what

A nice quick romp of a steam punk mini mystery. The author successfully creates a cadre of characters that come to life. The investigation, which is the thrust of the novella, is a bit like a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The ending however, was a bit shallow hence the 4 stars.

Michael Coorlim is a teller of strange stories for stranger people. He collects them, the oddballs. The mystics and fire-spinners, the sages and tricksters. He curates their tales, combines their elements and lets them rattle around inside his rock-tumbler skull until they gleam, then spills them loose onto the page for like-minded readers to enjoy.

He writes fast-paced stories about real people in
