Jack Lawson grew up poor and can’t forget it. He’s a huge success in the business world, but it won’t be enough until the image of “poor little Jack” is completely wiped away. When Jack runs into his old friend, Noah Mercier, he decides that Noah’s sister, an up-and-coming movie star, would be the perfect evidence of glamorous success. If Jack can win Hayley, it will be cl...more

The story is interesting -- because it doesn't really build-up into the love-relationship between the two men. I mean, when Jack asks Noah out, he has no hidden intention except to escape the meeting with Noah's firm (though Jack recognizes Noah as his high school friend). Then, when Jack finds out that Noah's sister is a famous actress, Jack wants a date with her, as a trade to ensure Noah's firm gets the project.
With that premise, Jack comes as a bit a jerk in the beginning. He seems to be th...more

Fab short story about super CEO Jack Lawson and unassuming ad guy Noah. Jack likes Noah but thinks he needs to get with Noah's famous actress sister to prove to the world that he's made it. Jack's fairly unlikeable at first but this author knows how to play her readers and by the time you finish the story you just love him. Clever and elegant little tale.

Jack Lawson has come a long way in life from the kid who worked in the school cafeteria, he now has his own billion dollar company, he has the image, he has the right clothes, he eats at the right places but there is still something missing. First of all there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this story, It is what it is, a fairly short cute, fun story - well written, good concept, likeable characters and a nice feel good factor.
My actual favorite part of the book was the banter and witty repartee between Jack and Claire his right hand assistant, I love that style of humour and thought Kate Sherwood did it really well. The romance between exuberant Jack and shy Noah was also very nice, it was more like a gentle romance than a " s...more

I have a soft spot for adorable asshole MCs. You know, the ones who are self centered and arrogant but still come out so charming and sweet that you can't help but love them despite wanting to punch their nose at least once in the story?
Jack is like that but the assholeness is more a result of a misguided and naive view of success rather than an unjustifiably bloated ego. You see he grew up poor and has only ever worked towards being as successful as he can possibly be. He already has the house,...more

Although I wasn't too taken by the blurb, I knew I wanted to give this book a try as I've read a couple of Kate Sherwood's novels and wanted to see how her talent transferred to something shorter. I was delighted to find that same smooth style, gentle humour and cast of appealing characters here.

Reviewed by Stacey Jo: Jack Lawson runs a chemical company and Noah Mercier works for the marketing firm doing their marketing. He and jack are old friends from school. Jack seems pretty over the top and Noah is very reserved. They start hanging out a lot. The problem is that Noah really cares about Jack but Jack, who is actually bi, is so hung up on his image, wants Noah to set him up with Noah’s movie star sister. Jack spends the first part of the book fawning over her and actually makes a “dea...more

I have to say I was completely ready to hate Jack Lawson. He wants what he wants and expects to get it. He has ideas about what makes life complete, and those ideas can be painful to someone. He hurts Noah, and even when he realizes it sometimes, he doesn’t DO anything about it. So like I said, I wanted to hate him.
Fortunately, I suppose Jack Lawson isn’t hateful. While not everything can be blamed on his past, his view on life being a little skewed can be. He...more

Interesting story about Jack and Noah. They went to high school together and Jack has gone on to be the CEO of a very profitable company. He has a quirky personality and has some hangups about status - making sure it appears that he's "made it" in business. He is also bisexual. He grew up poor and he's got baggage. Noah is a gay man who now works for an Advertising agency that Jack is interviewing. Jack likes the mess with people and he decides that to mess with this agency, he'll only talk to N...more

Jack Lawson is hot, successful, on his way to being a billionaire. His problem? He can't forget that he grew up poor. Jack has spent his life becoming an uber successful businessman, CEO of a multinational company and acquiring all the trappings affluence brings. Still he is not completely happy, something is missing.

I've read a couple of Kate Sherwood books before and found them angsty reads. This novella shows us a little of the diversity in this author's repertoire as this story is a fun, breezy tale with a lighthearted tone.
Jack is the CEO of a chemical company who comes from a poor background. He has everything he desires but still finds that there's something missing in his life. At a sales pitch from an advertising company, he bumps into Noah who works as an ideas man for the company. Jack discovers t...more

At first I was a little worried that Jack was going to annoy me, he walked pretty close to the line a few times, but once I kind of got used to him he grew on me. He is always on, barreling ahead and no one gets in his way. He's not mean about it really, he's just got an agenda and people seem to fall into line around him, until he meets Noah, who went to high school with him and kind of throws him off his game. Jack's relationship with his admin was hilarious. The whole thing with mini-muffins...more
It's a cute story. Old high-school colleagues meet up in totally different circumstances years afterward. Instant chemistry from both sides yet one lets logic (his term of logic, that is) and ambitions get in the way and decides to date the other's sister instead. It would've brought a lot of misery and drama, but (thank god) after one designed date with said sister Jack, the daft bugger, realizes his mistakes. Not that he's spared the anxiety when things don't turn out as he expected (serves hi...more
This was a sweet and funny story that really just worked for me. Jack is pretty oblivious and sometimes I wanted to shake him, but his underlying motivations made him sympathetic. I loved his combination of almost innocent enthusiasm and driven achievement (and to a scientist like me, his love of chemistry didn't hurt either.) Noah was great as the guy falling hopelessly for the hurricane that is Jack, and trying his best to keep his bearings and not get sucked under. This would be a great story...more
This novella was cute as a button. Jack was interesting and intelligent bloke. Even if Jack was rich and well know, he only wanted to present a mask of success. On the other side Noah, wow he was a shy and calm character. When Jack came into Noah life, he was like a hurricane breaking down all his walls. I liked how Jack interacted with Noah, so self assured and smart.

More Than Chemistry was perfect, totally cute, and really well written. I enjoyed it much more than I expected to based on the blurb. I was expecting to hate Jack but I actually found him quite lovable. Although I did exclaim "what a bastard!" at one point because, quite frankly, he was bloody stupid to have made that deal with Noah. I thought it was a little heartless, but then I suppose he didn't realise how Noah felt at that point. I really loved the epilogue too, which rounded off the story...more
Kate Sherwood is an auto-buy author for me and More Than Chemistry is a delightful novella that surprised me because I thought I’d have a hard time liking the main character Jack Lawson from the blurb. But Ms. Sherwood was able to take a self-absorbed and sometimes juvenile man and make me like him.

I really liked this story. It's a quick read that was very cute while a bit intense. I didn't necessarily like the main character, Jack, for most of the book because I found him too shallow and too focused on what everyone thought of him. I loved the second MC, Noah, though. He's a bit mousy and shy but he gets all excited and chatty about certain things which I found really cute.

Sadly the characters didn't do it for me. As a CEO of a multimillion Dollar company Jack seemed too childish for me. His decisions, his reactions just didn't fit with his corporate role and that made his character so unbelievable for me. I had the feeling a lot of background information about the characters were missing. And the ending came out of nowhere, too sudden and too homey when five pages before Jack was still figuring out if he liked Noah more than his sister.
I am yet to read a book by Kate Sherwood that I haven't loved. And this was no exception. Jack was charming and funny. I loved his interactions with Claire; I read them all with a big grin plastered across my face. Dialogue is one of THE keys in a good book; and Kate just nails it every time. It just flows, naturally - as if you are in the conversation; and the romance angle was cute.
This is why Kate is an auto buy for me - she never disappoints .

My God, Jack was annoying. He desperately needed to grow up. And the way he kept calling his assistant Claire-- a grown woman, older than him-- "girl" made my skin crawl. And the way he kept thinking about what a ~good little wifey~ Haley would make; she's an actress, asshole, she has a career and success of her own. What a douche. I feel sorry for Noah, frankly, stuck with a guy like that.
I just adored this! Excellent writing, I loved how dialogue driven it was and how Jack came off as a jerk at first but had the inner ramblings of a kid. Several things had me laughing out loud, like asking about an elephant and his back and forths with Claire...definitely some great lines in this. I could definitely read more about these guys, it was very entertaining!
A cute but substantially light weight story about a man who comes from a poor background (glossed over but hinted at in the story) who thinks he needs to show certain outside signs, like going to the right restaurants, wearing the correct clothes and being seen with the perfect companion, to show he's made it in this world. When he meets Noah Mercier he begins to question if what he should want is really what he desires. It's enjoyable but lacking in depth to really form a lasting impression.
This is a wonderful book. I loved Jack, his sarcasm, his exuberance and the way he fell for Noah without even realising it. Noah is so sweet, and goofy, just lovely. Claire was perfect as Jack's right hand woman, as was Noah's sister. I loved everything about this story and particularly the epilogue, it just finished the book off perfectly. This is the 'let's curl up on the sofa, on a rainy afternoon' book as it will bright brightness to your day.
This was light and fun. In the beginning Jack comes off as a bit shallow and breezy for a very successful billionaire executive, and a touch cynical -- but this all fits when you discover his backstory. I really liked his slightly snarky inner dialogue and the witty, teasing repartee with Noah. Shy, quiet, vegetarian Noah who doesn’t know what to make of Hurricane Jack. You see, Jack is all omnivorous and that doesn’t mean just food, he likes girls and guys. The fun is in watching him thrown o...more
