A monster plagues the tiny kingdom ruled by King Awiergan. The dragon, left unchallenged by untrained warriors of a weak king, is pacified only through a monthly sacrifice of the kingdom’s young people. This was a wonderful coming of age story. A dragon plagues a small, poor kingdom demanding that a youth between the age of 15 -20 be sacrificed every month to sate its hunger. Crown Prince Caedmon watches in agony as his friends fall in the monthly lottery to their deaths. Caedmon discovers one day that his father has purposely kept Caedmon's name out of the lottery. Through his time on the rock as the knight battles the dragon to sa

A quite enjoyable read from Hayden Thorne, someone I've grown to learn has a real knack for stories such as these where the prose relies on narration and storytelling. Written like a fairy-tale, though more of a YA historical fantasy, this story has the feel of a oppressive radical government, a la The Hunger Games, and with a sweet, honorable, and steely young hero at the moment he reaches adulthood. It's a nice little short typical in the style of Hayden Thorne's YA stories that I've

Um... Depressing much? A good ending and all, but man it might as will not have been! I hated parts of it and others were alright at best. I love fantasy, but not like this. Ugh! Good thing it's so short.

I’ve lived most of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area though I wasn’t born there (or, indeed, the USA). I’m married with no kids and three cats and am a cycling nut. I write speculative fiction for gay teens and adults, my stories largely inspired by folklore, gothic fiction, and even superheroes, among others.
