As I enjoyed his other kid's book, "Remembering Crystal" which was about death and friendship (I especially liked the illustrations), I jumped at the chance at a new one of his books. This book is all about the power of imagination, aided in this case by transparencies of whatever animal Zelda the goose is pretending to be. My favorites were the GooseyBee, GooGiraffe, and Goosey Peacock for the illustrations and the Butterfloose for the name. Highly recommended for ages 1-6, 4 stars.

Zelda is a "varigoose." With just a turn of a transparent page, she can become all sorts of exotic animals, such as a "goosenail." I love the use of the transparencies in this book. Kids probably don't see them too much anymore in these days of PowerPoint. Zelda's shape can mold itself into all sorts of creatures with the help of the embellishments painted on the transparencies.

The book is also a tribute to the power of imagination; kids often picture themselves looking like different animals d...more

I love the illustrations in this book! It's really great for showing the students that they can be or do anything they want to. I love the creativity of the names and how the goose transforms to be different creatures. I would definitely suggest this book to parents and teachers. This could be a cool writing and illustration project as well.

Zelda the Varigoose has an active imagination. Simple illustrations of Zelda are overlaid with transparent acetate to transform her into animals like a goosnail, goosephant, and googiraffe. But in the end, Zelda admits she is happiest being herself, a goose. Clever illustrations, the interactive nature of the clear pages, and concise lyrical prose will captivate the reader and lead to hearty laughs.

It's a shame this book is too small for story time, because it is so beautiful! Zelda the goose "becomes" different animals---each page has a tranparent overlay so you can see the "goosnail", the "goosephant" and the "whalegoose"! This would make a lovely gift for children who like animals and art.

The illustrations of Zelda the Varigoose are adorable. Simple, but colorful. The overlays are bright and fun, and children will enjoy Zelda's transformations. The accompanying text in verse was ok, but not phenomenal - it could have been left out entirely with no deleterious effects.

Simple illustrations of Zelda the goose, that are overlaid with clear page to transform her into other animals such as: a goose-elephant, a goose-bug, and many others. Such a cleaver idea for a story that children will wish to read again and again.

I love when books have unique uses of transparent pages. Fun for art. I'm going to try this as a poetry read aloud. Read aloud only the poem to see if kids can guess the animal before you show it.

Wonderfully imaginative - children will be able to relate to this fabulous book. Very creative artwork - kudos to you Mr. Loth! I love this little book and will be seeking out the others done by Loth.

The transparent pages were adorable. This book would definitely feed a child's creativity. I found some of the wording to feel clunky.
Dawn
A wonderful, interactive picture book that asks, "Just who am I?" Love, love this new book by an author I'm not familiar w/Sebastian Loth.

Super Cute. The drawings were ingenious. It could spark talk about being yourself, or being flexible or about differences.
Kara
Good poetry book for younger students. Also, the overlay illustrations are fun and interesting.
Linda Atkinson
A great book for one-on-one. Think the kids will love the transparencies.
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy)
Interesting concept, not sure it was as well executed as I would have liked.
Paula
Transparent pages transform Zelda into different creatures.
Edward Sullivan
Fun concept somewhat reminiscent of Jack Prelutsky's Scranimals.
Ashley
Cuuuute. Zelda is a goose who imagines herself to be all kinds of different animals, and tells us a bit about each one in rhyme. Transparent pages make this SO neat to flip through.
