Desolate soddie dweller Cal is only a heartbeat away from giving up on life entirely. He’s lost his wife and kids and the will to survive life on the bleeding edge of the frontier. He spends his days grinding out the barest living and at night he sits in the small family cemetery and looks up at the stars.

A short story with a big presence. Two men with difficult backgrounds in a barren scorched land. Utter defeat and lack of hope morphing into a tentative something.

Despite the short length there's enough here to give a strong impression of both characters, they both felt very real. Both have troubles, both are alone.

There's no magic HEA but instead the shared heart-beat of hope and new beginnings. While life might be hard for them yet, the burden is now shared.

Amazingly beautiful story so much emotion wrapped into such a short read! So sad but with a glimmer of hope and the start of something special and a new beginning. Loved it! Please Ms. Maxfield I hope you will think about writing another story with Cal and Laurent.

This was a beautiful story about forgiveness and compassion. In so few pages we have a sense of time and are moved from loneliness to hope. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sad yet sweet story about a man who's given up on everything after losing his family, when a stranger shows up offering a second chance at life, and love.

This packed so much emotion for a short story. Redemption is key to the fates of these two men. Don't overlook this story.
