Julianne counts the days until she can pack her bags and leave her old-money, tradition-bound Southern town where appearance is everything and secrecy is a way of life. A piano virtuoso, she dreams of attending a prestigious music school in Boston. Failure is not an option, so she enlists the help of New England Conservatory graduate Isaac Laroche to help her.

I don’t read a great deal of dramatic, contemporary, new adult literature. When done well, these stories are sad and haunting and gut wrenching and make me want to put a 45 to my head. People … Want is done well—and in this case—worth the risk of consuming a box of Kleenex, and, well, I was joking about the need for firearms. I loved this story. Truly. Read the whole thing in a day. I hated and loved all the characters respectively. I screamed at them in my head when they did stupid things and h...more

When we sin again, I think I could be in love with the devil.

I tip my invisible hat to Stephanie Lawton for writing such a beautifully flawed book.
Dust motes float in the air, dancing it seems to the quiet energy of his music. I feel his sadness now more than ever. He says much, much more through the piano than he ever does with his spare words.

My blind assumption that this was just another student/teacher affair was completely wrong. This is not your run-of-the-mill Mary Kay Letourneau st...more

I want my paperback now! :-)

First I have to congratulate the designer on the cover because it is not only beautiful but very significant to the story.

WANT was a real surprise...

Julianne is a southern girl of 17 years whose passion is music. When her piano instructor get sick, start taking classes with Isaac. As the days pass, the attraction between them becomes complicated by the age difference and the problems that each of them has.

While the beginning of the story is slow, the story is strong e...more

When I finished reading Want, I came to a realisation. Contemporary YA and I have never been the best of friends, but recently I've read quite a few of them that I particularly enjoyed. And Want helped me see what it is that I need to enjoy Contemporary YA - a gritty storyline and a less-than-perfect heroine. In other words, books that make me THINK, and Want certainly did that.

On face value, Julianne is an average girl with an above-average talent. Underneath, she is an insecure, confused girl,...more

Wow!!! What a long ride that was! It was a good trip I read for 3 hours and could not put it down. I am just not sure why. I have major issues with this book yet I am still thinking it over.

Family dysfunction and age of consent are issues that seem to way heavy on ones mind when you finish Want. I like that it lingers in my mind well after the last page. For me the age thing was never an issue.

Juli's family situation is just horrid and I really wanted to kill her Dad. HOW could you?????

I just finished reading an ARC copy of Want by Stephanie Lawton. I stayed up until 2 this morning unable to put it down. I thought about it all day and rushed home after work to finish reading it. It’s been some time since I’ve been so compelled by a book that I was unable to put it down, so I’m thrilled to share this review with you.

The main character in Want is Julianne, a complex, interesting and immensely talented seventeen-year-old. She faces a horrific home life, the psychological impact o...more

Uhm...What just happened??

Disturbingly good!
I'm not usually into teacher-student or age-difference romance but I was flipping page after page of Want like a lunatic.

Uncompressable thoughts:
Isaac WHY? I had so much patience and faith in you. Why must you break my heart and tear Juli's like that??

Juli, can I adopt you in my family and shower you with the love and care that you never had but deserve more than anyone else? Your psychotic breakdowns did very unhealthy things to my heart but I know...more

Julianne did whatever she had to in order to escape the abuse of her southern home. Isaac was a mystery throughout the book. Dave was absolutely sweet. But the drama in this novel was addicting and unable to take your eyes away from reading it. The book deals with a lot of things sweet love, challenges growing up, tough decisions, and coming of age. If you have the time, buy this book, It does feel a bit too dark for me, I really don't read things dealing with such dark themes.

A Solid Four Stars

To be honest, the cover is what first drew me into to this book. It’s just beautiful. The story itself was intriguing, but within it, laid a much darker tale.

**Possible spoilers ahead**

This is not another typical YA. It dealt with a lot of difficult issues, and I do mean a lot. Our heroine, Julianne, has a horrible home life and leads a life full of secrets. Her mother has severe mental issues and often times, takes her anger and frustration out on Juli. She practically keeps...more

If you want vampires and werewolves, faeries, fallen angels or zombies, you won’t find them here. I know a real-life monster.

Julianne (Juli)’s only wish is to get into New England Conservatory. When her old piano teacher has stroke and his job is transferred to his nephew, Juli thinks that this is a sign. Her new piano teacher, Isaac, is graduated from New England Conservatory. Isaac doesn’t show any emotional feeling at first, but as they spend more time together, he starts to smile and talk mo...more

I really enjoyed reading this story. I liked that the story had a southern twist; it was pretty refreshing! There are complex characters and I thought Lawton wrote them, characterized them very well. Dave had a great personality; I thought he lightened up the mood in some tense scenes. Isaac is more reserved and in a way mysterious, but as the story comes along, we definitely learn more about him. To me, Julianne seemed like a realistic character, and I enjoyed reading this from her point of vie...more

WoW! That was INTENSE!

I think this review will have a few confessions in it. For example… I confess that prior to this book being released I was drawn immediately to the cover. I confess that I passed on it because books like these are the reasons why I also hate to watch the news; hate to be emotionally and mentally beat up (the real world can be ugly). I confess that I hate...more

Let me fill you in on a little secret. Once upon a time, I auditioned for a spot on a junior panel of piano players. It was highly prestigious, and my hands were shaking like crazy. I prepared for this for months now, and I probably played the piece a million times, had nightmares over it, and gained twenty pounds for all the ice cream I ate when I played badly. When I stepped in front of those judges, my life flashed before my eyes.

Guess what happened?

I botched the audition. And then threw up....more

I have really mixed feelings here.

I'll sum up my review to what I liked and did't like.

Liked:
- Mr. Cline. He was family to Julianne and the only one who actually had some sense in him, besides being a really likable character.
- Dave. I connected with him from the moment he steped into Julianne's studio. He was there for her whenever she needed him and even when she didn't.
- The ending.(view spoiler)[I was actually glad that Isaac left. Who knows where, but he left. The asshole.

I liked that she

Juli can’t wait to blow the doors off her southern town. She hates the gossip and the small town drama. She’s getting out, and her piano is the ticket. When her piano teacher suffers a stroke, her lessons are taken over by his nephew Isaac.

Juli seems to have a perfect family on the outside and that’s just the way her mother wants it, but there are unsettling things happening under the surface. It seems like Isaac might be the only one who can understand what Juli is going through, but Isaac has...more

When I read the synopsis, I was a little hesitant. Student-teacher relationships usually go on my extremely small list of Things That Make Me A Bit Uncomfortable, but I am so so so glad I didn’t let it deter me because this book grabbed me by the neck and even at 6am when I REALLY had to put it down and go to sleep, it was very difficult for my brain to leave it.

Why was that so hard? Because this book is seductive and completely twisted. I wasn’t expecting this story to be so dark, but there wer...more

Julianne Casquette comes from your old school, traditional southern family with the amazing talent for the piano. Her world has never been that of a sane one, but it goes for a trip when her piano instructor has a stroke and has his nephew, Issac Laroche, continue on with them.
Trying to form a relationship with him could be the end to either him or her.

Julianne is 17 years old and a talented pianist from Mobile, Alabama. What she wants most is to get into the New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston so that she can escape from home. When her piano instructor gets sick, his nephew, Isaac, is hired to help Julianne prepare for the NEC audition. Being an NEC graduate, Isaac knows what it takes and pushes Julianne to play with passion beyond her technical abilities. First, I should warn you I'm still in the moment when I finished a book that I loved, I don't know how to describe it. So this review is all my thoughts and my feeling about Want.

Let me start by saying this book was absolutely nothing like what I expected when I sat down to read. I have read a fair share of YA books, but WANT is miles above anything I have read from this genre lately.

Stephanie Lawton presents us with a southern world, steeped in tradition and dark secrets. The MC, Julianne is flawed and "real" and I was rooting for her from page one. What a wonderful departure this was from the usual perfect life, beautiful flawless MC's present in so much of today's YA...more

People say you should never judge a book by its cover. In this instance IGNORE THEM. Want is just as beautiful on the inside. And that’s saying something because the sumptuous cover is one of my all-time favourites.

I finished Want in a day. Couldn’t put it down, much to my husband’s annoyance! I adored this darkly seductive story with its dysfunctional characters even though the violence, abuse, and self-harming were an excruciating read – at times. (But the book is about so much more than just...more

Wow, this book was really good!!Like really!!LOL…Want definitely takes your emotions on a ride. At first I thought I knew what would happen but towards the end I was intrigued because things weren’t panning out like I expected. I could not figure what in hell would happen next for the life of me, and Stephanie Lawton sure surprises us. But life is like that; you never know how your story will turn out or who will come out your hero in the end…. This story showed me that.

The ending was no

We’ve all read a book that had a character that was so completely talented you were envious, almost a little jealous!!

By the second paragraph, I was engulfed into Want.
The writing is exceptional. It flows like poetry.
It has a touch of forbidden lust, a damaged family, and one very talented girl.

Julianne is a brilliant pianist. When her instructor turns ill, he suggests that she employ the help of his equally talented grandson, Isaac Laroche. (view spoiler)[Good grief. Even his name is hot. (...more

As a young girl, I watched my mom watch countless hours of shows and movies on Lifetime. I’ve come to realize that “depression” is entertaining. “Hardships” as a whole bring us together thinking with one mind of justice, hugs all around, and Kumbayah. Yet it is hardships at its singular level that separates. It separates with secretly and closed lips. That one individual experiencing it within an isolation of their emotions emits selfishness to thinking they are the only person in the world that...more

Julianne lived in a small town called Mobile. she was seventeen, with extraordinary talent for playing piano and dreaming of attending a music school in Boston, away from her abusive mother. after Mr. Cline had his stroke, Julianne had no mentor until Mr. Cline sent his nephew Isaac. Isaac graduated from the same music school in Boston that Julianne wanted in, which made him a perfect mentor. they were attracted to each other, but Isaac's history didn't give him too much freedom to be with a gir...more

Loved this book!

This book was so different; It was one of those books that even after I finished reading it I kept thinking about it and the characters. What I like most about it is that it is real, real in that it deals with real problems that happen to real people, it doesn't hold mystical creatures like vampires and such which was refreshing for a change. It dealt with real life issues like abuse and depression, and the struggle with what to do with your life when nothing goes your way and ev...more

Yup, you saw right, this is my second blog tour! I've actually tried to schedule everything before my exams so I can be sure of posting, so the next blog tour I take part in may be next month.... But anyway, today, I'm here to review Want (an Upper YA Romance) by Stephanie Lawton.

Basically, Want revolves around Julianne (Juli), a music prodigy who's trying her best to escape her mom and the small town she grows up in. But due to some unfortunate events, she ends up with a new teacher just before...more

I wanted to take some time and really construct an adequate review for this story. Yes, this is a lovely, layered, heartfelt story but it's something more. Miss Lawton created real characters with real struggles. I don't mean your average teenage angst stuff - I mean big-time, heavy-duty issue stuff. There were times I winced, felt uncomfortable and really upset. Times I wanted to shake Juli and punch Isaac. (Dave I just loved). I wanted to call CPS on Juli's parents... Okay, I'm stopping. That'...more

After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.

A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, i...more
