If you had any feelings that Enchantment was a fluke, you were dead wrong!

On my review of Enchantment I said it was a sweet love story... if that's true Taken it's slight darker counterpart. While I really enjoyed Enchantment I loved Taken. I had not expected to like Enchantment so much when I picked it up but it pleasantly surprised me. Taken pulled me out of my chair into a gripping adventure, it was absolutely more my style. What a ride! Taken is the second book in the Channie series and I absolutely cannot wait for the third!

The title: Perfect – although I didn’t understand it until the very last chapter.

The heroine, Channie: Young, honest, considerate and real. She doesn’t always make the best decision, but all her decisions are pure of heart. Channie is one of those fictional characters that I’d like to hang out with for a day.

I did not like this book quite as much as the first book, but I still liked it. I think I would have liked this book better if the characters were older, but I struggled with shy, quiet Channie spending all her time with Josh in bed. I would have liked to have gotten more of them doing normal couple things, not just sneaking around and hooking up in the back of Josh's car. I understand that it was somewhat a product of their circumstances, but, as Channie pointed out, they went from doing nothin...more I did not like this book quite as much as the first book, but I still liked it. I think I would have liked this book better if the characters were older, but I struggled with shy, quiet Channie spending all her time with Josh in bed. Channie no longer has powers, and I feel sorry for the way she gets treated because of this. It does not help that her mom is crazy (though I will not go into detail about that as much because the details are important and I do not want to give them away). However, she adjusts to not having powers pretty well, though I hope their is some way she can get them back.

Josh kind of goes emo in this book. This surprised me because that goes against his power name of Valor, and after the way Channie's names made her act in the first book, I did not think Valor would allow Josh to through hissy fits, but he did. I completely understood where he was coming from, and they made sense, but they did not totally match what I knew of his character, so they somewhat surprised me.

Hunter played a much bigger role in this book. I really tried to like him, but I just could not. Part of it is that he thinks the way of his people, with all of their old-timed schools of thought. The way he acts is a product of that, and not his fault, but I found him to be sort of closed minded and judgmental which did not work for me since other people judging him bothers him.

I was impressed with Channie's dad. Even though he is still a greedy jerk, he was trying to do right by Channie, and I had to respect that.

I liked Diego, though his appearance came out of left field. He was trying his to do right by Abby and his boys, and, even if he makes some questionable decisions, I have to respect that.

I love the trips, I am a little worried about them, particularly Savvy. He is one devious little child, and I really hope that they will be able to play a bigger part in the last book.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I flew through it. I did not like it as much as the first one, but I still liked it quite a bit.

REVIEW: Abel does it again!

Normally, I can't stand books with southern influence in them. Take Shiloh for example. I just couldn't read through the thick-accented book! Taken, however, doesn't let the southern influence ruin the book. It's also hard for me, a Northwestern-er, to understand Southern-ality, BUT this book manages to keep it fun, and doesn't sacrifice itself!

I've never read an e-book this amazing! I started the series believing it would be ok, but I've been spellbound ever since. The book keeps moving, it's action-packed with twists and turns, and great characters. You'll laugh, cry, and find yourself on edge wanting more!

More than just a story about historical grievances between magical clans (Ahem, Nightshade), it has dark, realistic fiction that makes you weep! It has love so pure (but not too mushy)! It has a plot that continues to unfold with every page, never obviously.

If I had one complaint, I would say that some of the scenery descriptions are lacking. Its a fine line between lacking and becoming the next Steinbeck. I had trouble picturing the first scenes in the book, and that was hard to fill in the blanks.

Ok, I have one last issue: No recap from book one! This can make or break a book for me. Like Insurgent; I waited a long time to read it, and then when I go to read it, I have no clue who everyone is, where we are, or what's the problem! I had forgotten why Channie and Jossh were hiding in the backwoods, or how Channie lost her power,etc. Eventually, I remembered, but I'm finicky about this!

All in all, a spellbinding read that is like a roller coaster ride. I can't wait for book 3!(less)

(view spoiler)...more (view spoiler)[A cold wave of fear quenched Channie's anger. Their bond was stronger - even after that unsatisfying quickie - but a magical bond was no match for selfishness. She'd hurt Josh's feelings on purpose. He'd given in to his carnal desires with no thought to what she wanted, but he'd been swept away by his desire for her. It was actually flattering, now that she thought about it.

Seriously? Flattering? Oh yes, especially the way he immediately jumped up and stomped out like a toddler with his feelings hurt, not letting her know where he was going (despite the fact that they're in mortal danger and he just left her completely defenseless, not to mention the fact that he could be killed and she wouldn't know until well after the fact). I think the point of that little blurb was to show us that she felt she was being selfish, but frankly, in that situation, I can't believe that they can even think about sex. Hi, you could die. That's ok, let's do it! :D :D *shakes head* I'm obviously too old for this crap.

That's what it always came down to - whatever Channie wanted. She'd knocked his entire life off course. All those years of training every day and racing every single weekend...wasted. All those injuries and surgeries and excruciating physical therapy... It was all for nothing.

Instead, he was stuck out here in the middle of nowhere, married, and doing his best to figure out how to use magic so he could protect Channie. He was still committed to that goal, and to her, but that didn't mean he couldn't take one lousy afternoon off and do something he wanted for a change.

(Actually, yeah, it kind of does mean you can't "take one lousy afternoon off and do something [you] want." How about focusing on keeping yourselves alive? No? Well ok then.)

And that pretty much summed up the book for me. Two spoiled teenagers who aren't mature enough to be married. If my marriage worked like that - *laughs* - I'm pretty sure we'd have been divorced within a year. And I'm not talking about sex, either.

However, since we're on that topic, that appears to be all this book is about. Not impressed. (hide spoiler)]

I generally judge a YA novel on how well it was written and whether or not I'd let my son read it. (Which is a recent development; I've always enjoyed YA novels for myself, but I like the fact that he's now old enough - at almost 12 - to share them.) We talk about the books he's read (I really love this age), so mention of sex and swearing or some violence (within context) isn't reason for immediate dismissal. This book does not qualify, based on those standards, and it'll be deleted off my Kindle after I'm finished with it.

I have to say: I'm not sure how this book classifies as a YA novel. Aside from the fact that the sex scenes aren't as descriptive, it's certainly more obsessed with sex than many adult romance novels I've read. I don't think YA has an erotica category, and this book reads more like soft core porn meets teenage fantasy of playing house. It's not very appealing to an adult, and with the main focus being "omg let's have sex!" (with an otherwise rather weak plot line), I certainly wouldn't want my kid reading it.

It takes a lot to make me seem like a prude (no, seriously), but this book definitely got under my skin and I can safely say that I don't approve of this stuff being targeted towards teenagers.

Further, the main characters, Channie and Josh, are both real assholes and this is definitely not a stand-alone book. None of the background is being explained (social hierarchy, what makes and Empty different from a mage or more importantly why some people are mages and others aren't, wtf the war is about, who the hell these people are, why they get the names they get, etc), and the writing is just so immature I can barely stand it. Urgh. (However, I did read the entire thing, even though I had to put it down a dozen or so times.)(less)

Okay so number 1 when I downloaded the book it did NOT say it was a sequel. So I came into the book a bit behind others. I let this be known because honestly I feel it dampened my ability to get attached to Taken. Book 2 did a lot of repition but it was always going over crap said 15 pages ago and not book 1. Very little was given away as to wth happened in the previous book, any characterization, plot, rules of the world, or political structure most of the time was explained well past the point...more Okay so number 1 when I downloaded the book it did NOT say it was a sequel. Which is as helpful as an apology for slapping someone about 3 days after actually doing it.
The book starts you off with the two main characters just out in the middle of the woods freezing to death. It sounds interesting till I tell you they both are going to whine and put themselves into deaths way OVER AND OVER again. Neither character was intellectually sound either in the common sense department or book sense. Further by readin we find both on their own in book 1 were excelling in their natural talent (josh a racer and channie as a healer) but their relationship has ruined both their lives. They keep saying love conquers all...but as the death toll rises and the story goes into the drink its hard to remember that. This was a love story right? Remind me please because never once did my heart go all a flutter. I am told they are in so much love and all the school girls giggle and gleam over the 16 year old girl getting married but I never saw it...
Moreover, the book is tagged YA. Really? Maybe the writing style but the content surely is NOT. There are quite a few murders, grusome torture seens, plenty of talk about rape, gambling, underage sex (he is technically 18 and she is a minor, dependent on what state your in the two year gap could be tried as rape especially since she never has permission from her parents), plenty of sexism, bigetry, do I really have to go on?

Oh and let me not forget! I hate the main characters. Both of them. We have 2, let us look at our "loving couple"
Josh...
An ass who the second love scene in the book I think it was finishes so fast our girl's head spins and doesn't even bother giving her a bit of foreplay. Okay...he is her first, they have only been dating/married a bit...she would be tight as ... especially when she describes her previous lifestyle of complete abstinance and that would be equivalent to rape. So when she is upset he LEAVES her alone when apparently there are assassins out to kill her. Then she feels bad?! wth really?! She even begs him to stay and runs after him breaking her ankle in the process..
He has no real skills other than apparently being able to ride a bike well and SUPPOSEDLY strong magic. I say supposedly because he is always getting his arse kicked and I have not seen him do to many impressive things.
He takes his wife/gf to his mom's house even though she begs him not to because she knows the mother will call her a whore etc...he promises her it wont happen (guess what it does! SHOCKER)
He actually asks her to stay in town till he graduates knowing at home she is being BEATEN.
He brings her to his dad's home for a few days and lets the father assume they have been shacking up.
He has no life skills... he can't cook/clean/etc
Channie...
Reminds you how much it hurts to be beaten by "Daddy" when he uses his belt and glad he isn't atm, then rushes off to hug him crying I love you Daddy !!
Leaves 3 small children alone in a home where she knows the two adults are both physically abusive.
Whines all day about how she is "empty" and how cruel life is without magic.
Is friends with the girl who called her a hill billy whore.
Allows her boyfriend to make her look easy to get out of explaining a ton of situations which would be "difficult". Hey channie I dont want dad asking questions just let him think we arent married and shcking up, hey channie I dont want to explain to dad why we got married let him just think I got you knocked up, hey Channie let me get you half naked in the back of the car so it looks like I am screwing you here in the car in a back alley on our wedding night and that way we dont look like we were the one's who just shot at your "momma's" car. That came right from the book sadly.
She is a mary sue, despite not being stunning, gifted beyond belief, and is definitely a pathetic reject. Let us face it when the story bends to facilitate her whims and everone seems infauted with her we still have a mary sue just at least the normal one you can understand why people would want to stalk, love, gush about her. Instead, here I am left with feelings of disgust for the incompetent, unfriendly, unwitty mary sue as I refuse to release common sense and logic. I have disbelief of anyone actually enjoying her character in REAL life.

The support characters are really unlovable to, the knocked up cousin of josh who is a snobby ...lets leave it at that, the physically abuse parents of channie, her sister who sees watching her own children as "babysitting" and bitches about them, diago the father of the three boys who was going to let one of them die so he could instead save abby, abby who ran away from home abandoning her children in book 1, Dad of channie who reminds us women have no opinion, should not be allowed to drive, or hold a job, obey the man, sit and do housework, etc. Mother who actually kills one of her daughters, almost kills her three grandchildren, is planning to cut out her other daughter's heart out, kills her husband, etc etc. What an award winning cast.
I hope the evil book sacrifices them both and blinks them out of existence. Taken ends with "momma" taking someone's memory away (I wont say who here), I just want to know if "momma" can take my memory away of the last 3 hours of reading this book.(less)

Okay Charlotte Abel you are now one of my favorite authors!! I loved this book. It was better then the first one because the characters are coming into their own. We get a more mature sense of Channie and Joshes relationship, even if it includes a lot of sex lol. I like how we get to see Josh learn and grow with his powers. I had the wonderful opportunity to read this story. And I must say, Charlotte Abel has outdone herself. The story of Channie and Josh runs twist and turns that rival a modern day roller coaster. Never say that things get easier for those two, because it didn’t.

Life together brought on a whole other set of challenges that this couple had to face. Being independent wasn’t easier than living with their families. Like all people, mistakes would be made along the way. Charlotte capitalizes on this t...more

"Taken", is the second book of the "Channie" series and what an awesome continuation of the series. I stayed up all night last night as I could not put this book down!
Josh and Channie continue on their road to being married and have many struggles along the way. This book takes them through many hard times but through it all they remain strong in their love for each other. The evil magic book continues to control their life. They also have to deal with Channie's mother Prudence after her use of the book made her crazy. Channie's family were at the mercy of Prudence's wrath when she totally flipped her lid.

Some characters made a turn for the better in this book. One of such character was Hunter. When we were first introduced to Hunter in Enchantment, I thought he was just a jerk trying to get into Channie's pants. I fell in love with Hunter in Taken, he turned out to be a great guy who cares for Channie's well being and a good friend to Josh.

Channie continues to be her same old moody self, and Josh continues to be the sweetheart that Channie doesn't always listen to. There were somethings that Channie had to deal with that made me uncomfortable but definitely added to the story. Channie was used to her mage way of life so when her father and mother either hit her or threatened to she did not see a problem with it. She even thought she would deserve it if she was stupid enough to disobey. Channie and her sister Abby had a conversation about it being okay for a man to hit them if they stepped out of line and that a male in control of their life is okay too. I thought it was funny that Channie never cut Josh any slack for reacting angrily to upsetting situations although Josh would never try to control her or think of putting his hand on her. My female equality mindset really wanted to shake some sense into those women that this is so not right. This scene definitely builds on the mage world and life, it also shows Abel's boldness with her in-depth storytelling.

There is so much happening in Josh and Channie's world that kept me tuned in to their story and experiencing their trials and triumphs to their ultimate destiny. Such a intense action driven read. This time the cliff hanger has me anxious about how things will be in the next installment of the series. (less)

I should say that this book was better than the previous one. The characters have grown and with them the author's skills. The beginning was a little slow, and kind of made me want to slap Channie and Josh for being such crybabies. It felt like the only thing Josh wanted to do was have sex and that's it. It was so annoying.
I was so glad about that encounter with the two trackers, that you wouldn't believe it!! Finally everyone was rushing to do something meaningful! Something other than argue o...more I should say that this book was better than the previous one. The characters have grown and with them the author's skills. The beginning was a little slow, and kind of made me want to slap Channie and Josh for being such crybabies. It felt like the only thing Josh wanted to do was have sex and that's it. It was so annoying.
I was so glad about that encounter with the two trackers, that you wouldn't believe it!! Finally everyone was rushing to do something meaningful! Something other than argue over a pot of stew or killing mice or making cornbread. But, all that annoyingly normal stuff was kind of insightful of the characters' thoughts and feelings. And I liked how this time there were multiple points of view. It was nice to hear Josh's thoughts for a change.
This novel seemed to take the story to a whole new plane. There was action, lots of running away from things and people, strong emotions and of course - every decision came with its consequences. Towards the end, everything was so intense, I was having hard time breathing. It was really an exhilarating ride.

The characters:
*Channie - Oh goodness, this girl irritated me so much with her weird decisions! Protecting Josh would've been much better if she'd actually listened to him. Besides, how could an Empty protect a powerful mage? She brought more trouble than anything else.

*Josh/Valor - I can't wait for him to actually step into his real shoes. Josh is a boy, while Valor is a man, and I really want to see the man. He's been peeking out from time to time both with resolution and cold-blooded decisions. Too bad nobody listens to him half the time. I guess though that this is what keeps the story going. I mean, if everything got solved right away, then there would be no story, so I get it :)

*Hunter - omg, Hunter was hilarious. And the new job he got - it cracked me up!!! I can honestly not imagine him doing those things. His accent was amazingly well portrayed.

*Daddy turned out to be not-so-selfish after all. I felt really bad for him when his wife turned psycho.

*Momma - urgh, just URGH!!! Magic here was like drugs in our world. The woman got seriously addicted and it turned her all Wicked Witch of the West. I really wanted to just see her dead. Harsh, but true. Sorry.

The ending was really powerful. It made me all emotional, but I didn't cry. I was just angry. Such a cliffhanger, Charlotte!!! You're playing dirty!!! LOL
Love it :) Really a great read!!

One a serious note, let's talk about how AWESOME this book is... Channie is scared, and frustrated, and stuck... oh, and don't forget about EMPTY... You know, everyone must make choices, and the one's that Channie made we to save her life and the lives of the ones she loved, but it cost her dearly. She got the fairy tale Prince, but had every single other part of her life taken away. I don't know if you can call it a fairy tale in this instance, but at the same time, LOVE IS ENOUGH :) I believe that's one of my favorite quotes directly from the book... you should read it to hear who says it! There is no one who writes like Mrs. Abel, and words flow, like a summer river... beautifully and strong. Seriously, you know the book is good, when you finish it, look at the clock, and realize that hours have passed and you never looked away from the words. If these people were real, I would be driving them in my car and taking them everywhere with me :) that's how realistic her characters are... with that said, let's talk about the characters!

Channie started out being the main character, and in a way she still is, she just isn't alone anymore. She is growing wonderfully, and has matured so much, as being thrust into a whole new world (again) can be a handful. She has her petty, childish moments, but what 17 year old doesn't? I think it's pretty awesome that Channie's ridiculously HORRIBLE childhood prepared her for this story, but prepare her it did, but boy did it throw her boyfriend for a loop...

Josh, is totally unprepared for this life, and he doesn't want anything to do with "this war" as he feels it isn't his to fight, and he doesn't understand things, but he LEARNS so much in this book. and I know that he loves Channie, and to him that is all that matters. He will do ANYTHING to protect her. And by the end of the book, my heart is shattered for him... read it, really, cuz I'm not gunna tell you why I am in pieces of tears for this :)

I secretely have a crush on Yummy Hunter (that's my nick-name for him) and regardless of the situations that come up between him, Josh, and Channie, I am SO GLAD he is on this journey! As for her sister Abby, and the Trips, I LOVE THE TRIPS, I am glad they are still accounted for in this story, but I swear, my stomach fell out of my toes at the end of this story! I cannot say anything else about this, but OH MY GOD!!! WOW... *deer-in-the-headlight eyes... looks devastated* yep, I was very quiet and stunned at the end... ARE YOU GOING READ THIS BOOK YET?!?!?!

So, I just finished this book. It took me a really long time to get through it and several starts and stops. I finally made myself plow through it.

It gets 2 stars because the end of the book does pick up and the story gets better. However, for most of this book I was just annoyed. Again, it felt like the whole book focused on sex and how soon the main couple could get back to enjoying each other physically.

Sequel to Enchantment….MUCH BETTER! I think I liked it more because I didn’t have to deal with the ‘parent’s as much. I read several reviews that sex was mentioned too often in the book, but I think the author does a brillant job at describing the two worlds these teenagers live in. She reminds us that even though Josh and Channie are part of a magical world, they are still in fact teenagers and face all of the same issues teenagers face. I really really really enjoyed this story! I knew I would from reading the first book in the series but I would have never ever expected this ending! First I want to state that although I was given this book as a gift from the author in exchange for a review, my review is my own opinion and not influenced by anyone, author included. Enjoyed the dynamic and evolution of the characters. I feel bad for Josh - it pretty much always feels like he's sacrificing everything in his life for Channie. He actually did have a great shot at making a (non-magical) name for himself. Anyhow, I do think the author made the characters as realistic and likable as possible. Characters make decisions I don't necessarily agree with but I can understand them nonetheless.
