My first review after two months away from the blog....

Did you ever read a book and think to yourself right afterwards..

This would make a great summer blockbuster movie?

That is exactly what I thought when I read Cannibal Reign. It is full of action, horror, drama, and lots of edge-of-your-seat suspense.

With the action, horror and suspense that was a constant throughout the book, I feared that the story would be incomplete or si...more

Pretty good read so far! Lots of prep work for the end of the world had me waiting for the final impact :) :) It was very suspenseful! I always wanted to see what was coming next!

I'm glad that it was realistic (in an unrealistic scenario I hope!) Great premise, the story wasn't too far fetched and showed how on the edge society really is when things break down. The dynamic btwn the characters was good too.

Great book :D It's worth reading twice, which I will be doing at some point again!

Decent plot, excellent action, remarkably shitty portrayal of characters. Sadly, characters are required for stories. Everyone was two dimensional. All the women were helpless and happily dependent and never challenged the men's decisions...oh, except for the lesbian. She can give good head though, so it's okay. Koloniar's idea of a romantic moment is "Your dick is so BIG!" All the of character-driven conflict set up in the beginning of the story is abandoned somewhere along the way. I love a go...more

I'm a bit baffled by the rave reviews for this book. It started off good, I'm a huge fan of any post-apocalyptic story so I was immediately drawn-in by the story. The author started developing characters, but quickly forgot about it as the story progressed. As a result I not only had a difficult time remembering who was who (there were a lot of characters and because they pretty much had no personalities, it made it difficult to keep track of them), but I didn't care about them at all. When one...more

This is one of the first stories I have read where the main characters were fully prepared for most (if not all) eventualities. Yes, it helped that a majority of them had strong military backgrounds, but I'm not referring to their ability to actually handle the events that befell them, but their ability to accept the fact that terrible things were going to happen. That's not to say the only reason they survived is because they were military. Marty shows that, no matter your life before, anyone c...more

Cannibal Reign is not a great title, but it certainly is a great book. 5 ex Green Berets catch wind of a secret - an asteroid is going to strike somewhere in the united states within a period of 8 months. They decide to do something about it by buying an abandoned missle silo, outfitting it and inviting some family and additional others to live with them while events above ground go bad. They take advantage of the US's delay in telling the populous and then button up just as the asteroid hits.

I heard about this book from the morning radio show I listen to. Sarah, from Sarah and Vinnie (RadioAlice 97.3 FM - San Francisco) was talking about a book that had been recommended to her and she powered through and couldn't put it down. On an odd note, apparently her talking about it helped the book to have huge sales via Amazon and the author wrote her an email.

Anyway - I, too, decided to give it a try. In a nutshell, it's a great, fast paced read. It reads like a movie. Scenes from a movie....more

In CANNIBAL REIGN by Thomas Koloniar, the world learns an asteroid is about to end life as we know it. As the United States dissolves into chaos and anarchy, five Green Berets, benefiting from advance knowledge, have prepared, stockpiling food and recruiting a small group of survivors to join them in a refurbished, abandoned missile silo. Meanwhile, in Hawaii, a new nation emerges in the aftermath, one that might give humanity a second chance while the rest of the world succumbs to savagery and...more

Imagine, if you will, an unapologetic throwback of a creature- lovingly sewn together from parts of any number of John Wayne movies (Rio Bravo, Fort Apache, etc.), Lucifer's Hammer, Assault on Precinct 13 and an early Tom Clancy and what you have is Cannibal Reign....and I loved the hell out of it.

Now, when I say throwback, I say that in terms of a lot of fiction I grew up reading in the 70's- Robert Howard's 'Conan' books, the wonderful 'Casca' books, etc. You will not find a lot of philosophy...more

'Lucifer's Hammer'-like Book with Army SF guys buying a Minuteman silo and putting two years worth of food, med supplies and games and toys for a two year (or more) stay underground.

Meanwhile outside, the United States devolves into a 'Mad Max' dis-topia with renegade bike gangs and renegade military forces doing whatever it takes to survive.

One of the main characters, Max the Astronomer, who first discovers the Asteroid coming in from O.D.S. (Out Dere Somewhere), trys to warn the US but finds t...more

While no one wants to really see the world end (well, most don’t), we do love to read about it or watch it in movies and television. Not sure exactly what the attraction is; it is watching a very familiar world become suddenly quite alien, even horrifically so? It is sheer spectacle, of seeing massive explosions or getting the feel of walking through the ruins of once great metropolises? Is it seeing ordinary people, perhaps having survived through the mere luck of the draw, facing extraordinary...more

From My Newsletter Number 27:

I took two new books to the beach with me this summer. I had no idea how good they would be. The first one is called Cannibal Reign by Thomas Koloniar. It is his first novel and he tells a whale of a good science fiction story. I could not put it down. The story deals with an asteroid that slams into the earth in North America at over one hundred thousand miles an hour. There is no way to stop it. It will be close to an extinction event for humans, plunging the world...more

Cannibal Reign is by far the most terribly written, cringe worthy book that I have ever read. And I am shocked that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. There are numerous reviews on goodreads that describe the weak women and macho pitiless men. I agree with each of those reviews. There is little to no character development. While this book is called Cannibal Reign, I actually feel that it should be called Rapist Reign for as much as the word 'rapist' is used. There is no thought or curiosity g...more

Jack Forrest and his crew of former Green Berets are preparing for the end of the world in an abandoned missile silo, gathering a group of 50 men, women, and children in hopes of riding out the disaster to come. An asteroid is on its way towards Earth, and threatens to kill everyone within thousands of miles of impact, and kill millions more as the earth plummets into nuclear winter and ashy darkness. Meanwhile, astronomer...more

This book was recommended to me by GoodReads and several friends. So I gave it a try.

I was drawn into the world after the first chapter and couldn't put the book down. This is the first book that has given me hope for the post-apocalyptic world. The human cock roach can survive just about anything and this books plays up on that. People are only one DNA short of being an animal and this book proves it.

Marty spies the asteroid hurtling toward Earth and knows it means doom. Jack Forest and his fel...more

I'm a huge fan of post apocalypse novels, so much that I often overlook poor writing or lack of development. I really like the start of this story. Totally sucked me in but for some strange reason once the asteroid hits earth it goes to crap. Basically the book boils down to this. Guys rape and eat people. Women are defenseless and have no chance at survival. Now the women who are safe have some bizarre sex drive so in the midst of death and destruction oh and people eating people they are someh...more

So, this is weird. This book was such a fun as interesting read!! I really couldn't put it down, to the extent that I nearly boiled my tablet while reading it while making dinner. It's a totally different genre than I ever read, and it's definitely not high brow literature... I did skim some parts because I don't care about military training or what weapons do what, but the book is surprisingly easy to read and a ton of fun! I recommend for something different and thought provoking! Keep in mind...more

I loved this book! Although a lot of the characters were secondary, the important charters shined, and they all had their flaws but yet were important to the story line.

I enjoyed this book because I love zombie and apocalypse style stories, and this one was very well written. It also wasn't sugared down in any way. It was gory, it had detail, and it had depth. The story kept you guessing, and was a real page turner.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars out of 5 is because although it was very good...more

Well written -- engaging with enough threads and events to hold my intrest until the end.
The author seems to be confused mysogynist. On the one hand he as a tough female army medic who turns combatant and a female head of state. On the other hand the dynamics between the group leader and the women in his survival group seem to be traditional small town middle america. I found it unlikely that any women would be content to look after the children while their men were being overrun by a hord of...more

I loved this book. It wasn't perfect but it was very good. There were too many characters to keep track of and it got confusing at times as to who was who, but I loved it.

And after that . . . Hell.

Even though I think the title will turn some people off, this is a very good post-apocolyptic thriller. There is just the right amount of build up to the big impact which is very thrilling. Although I found one of the female characters, Susan, a bit unbelievable and stupid (but maybe that's how geniuses actually behave), I think the author paints a very realistic scenario of the chaos both before and after such a life altering event. There are some very unpleasant and gruesome events in the nove...more

I don't know what I made of this book. I don't think it went into as much depth as it should with it's characters. Certain chapters left me like... ?? I really like post apocalyptic books, movies etc. I guess I felt like this one missed the mark a little. Don't get me wrong. The author captured what would happen if only a small part of the population survived a natural disaster, plague, man made sickness or an earth shattering asteroid. It did entertain me. I guess the character development didn...more

Started out well, interesting idea. Characters seem a bit one dimensional, especially the women. Sex in the book are from poorly written porn scenes. (Not sure there is such a thing as a well written porn scene.)I'm a guy and even I was offended by the authors characterization of women. The message here was, just sit back, take care of the kids and let the men do the heavy thinking. The only exception is the woman who would become president of Hawaii.
The book does a better job at describing the...more

This was a fun read, well crafted and compelling. I'm a big believer that the character drives the story and Koloniar doesn't disappoint. His characters are believable, his dialogue genuine and the story is well paced. There is a real verisimilitude here, one that shows the amount of research he must have undertaken in the course of writing.

Thomas Koloniar reminds me of a young Bob McCammon or Joe Lansdale and that's a damn good thing. If you love post apocalyptic fiction, don't pass this one b...more

I heard about this book from the morning radio show that I listen to. After hearing the DJ talk about this book, I decided why not check it out. From the moment I read the first page, I was hooked. Even though the premise of the book is a little dark and scary, it was so much more than that. I can't believe this is the author's first published book. I'm hoping they end up turning this into a movie because it would be so interesting to see this played out on film. I highly recommend this book to...more

Character-driven and engaging, this was a hell of a read, particularly since it's a first novel. If I had one gripe, it's that the title really doesn't do it justice; it is far from a run-of-the-mill cannibal story! I was pleasantly surprised that the lead-up to the apocalypse occupied a significant part of the book and while the big "C" does factor into the post-disaster world, more emphasis is given to the emerging social dynamic of people who choose to retain their humanity, rather than goin...more

Not something I'd normally read ~ not into apocalyptic stories or cannibalism but this was really a good read and I didn't want to put it down as I wanted to know who, if anyone, was going to make it. The character development was very good and I felt connected to the main characters. And the cannibalism wasn't graphic so that part was bearable. I guess the only reason I took off one star was because of the cannibalism but really it's pretty close to getting 5 stars.

I had a hard time putting this down. One of the better apocalyptic novels I've read. I have to wonder if the main characters were able to create their "arc" how many official "arcs", backed with the full resources(pre-meteor, sorry asteroid) of the government are out there. The most frightening thing is when you realize how much is flying around our solar system and how little we actually watch. This has happened in the past..... Looking forward to a sequel.

When the world ends, people act like straight fools. Instead of banding together and trying to make things better, they make it worse. Author
Thomas Koloniar is an exceptional new writer that took us on an incredible journey. The story was well written and researched. I loved the interaction between the characters which included some great one liners. The market is so saturated with zombie novels that it was refreshing to read about cannibalism. Apparently a sequel is in the works. I would defin...more

Great book, really interesting idea. Really enjoyed the story, the only reason for the 4 stars is because I felt like the ending kind of puttered out. Not sure if it was because I was just SO into the book I felt a sense of disappointment when it ended, or if I just felt like I wanted to know more about what happens after the point the book ended...Maybe there is room for a sequel?

Anyways, well done Thomas Kolonair.
