The air raid siren. The bomb shelter. The gas mask given out at school-you were supposed to carry it everywhere you went. Crawling under the desk-like that would save you. The Nazi's. Hitler.

"That's. the sound of British might right there. You'll see, we will beat the Germans back.
Just like last time," his father said.

When the new kid came to school, Sam finally had a friend. They spent all their time together. When his friend passed out at school and was taken away, it was only a matter of d...more

Just downloaded this and read it. What a terrific story. Its 1940' s Britian WWII era. A young man, who feels so on the outside of everything. His parents , and adults in general disgust him, the kids at school ignore him, he feels misunderstood by everyone. The war rages around him. Gas masks are the mode de jour. Bomb shelters are a necessity but not everyone has one, his father begrudgingly builds one in his back yard, but is it safe, even he doesn't think so.
He finally finds a kindred spiri...more

Sam is a young boy living through the air-raids of World War II. We get to know his family and something of his school life. He seems to live much of his life in a state of worry and has only had one friend. It's a poignant little story, well written and believable. I enjoyed it.

I quite liked this story. Usually I'm not a big fan of short stories as they are not usually fully developed and lack description. But I feel this one had just the right amount. I liked how you could connect with Sam's character. This was a very quick read but I'm glad I read it.

This is a very short but well written book. I enjoyed the character of Sam and felt that he was very easy to relate to. It is a sad story but one which would have been all too familiar with those living out the Blitz. I will definitely read more from this Author.

I'm an author who lives in the sunny, green hills of England. As you can see in the photo to the left, I'm mostly bald.

Over the years people had often said that I should write a book so, in mid 2011, I did just that! Anyone wondering which book of mine to read first should start with Shelter from Thunder. 'tis short and available for free.

Feedback of any kind is always welcome.
