As its own title states, Three Italian Chronicles consists of several stories dealing with Italy. One thing to know before starting this book is that Stendhal (or Marie-Henry Beyle) was in love with Italy and that he lived there for a long time, working as a French consul. The stories are based upon true crimes committed during (arguably) the Renaissance. And they are quite gorey. I wasn't expecting this at all, but they were very melodramatic and full of stereotyped characters. After reading Th ...more

i want to read this one no less than "the life of.." there is just something about stendhal i love. i adore the thoughts and sensations he stirs in me. i love the profound insights he offers.

Based on these three stories, Stendahl likes high melodrama. And vengeful women.

Henri-Marie Beyle , better known by his pen name Stendhal , was a 19th-century French writer. Known for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology, he is considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism in his two novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839). ...more
