Congratulations to Kealan Patrick Burke for Thirty Miles South of Dry Country appearing on the final ballot for the 2012 Bram Stoker Awards.
For a horror novella, this was spot on. The voice of Warwick Tanner, the story's plot & pacing, and characterizations in general were all polished, phrasing professionally turned, subtly horrifying, and thoroughly entertaining.

This novella was a wonderful tale told in the same style and setting as Kealan Patrick Burke's previous fantastic novel CURRENCY OF SOULS. In "Thrity Miles..." (TMSDC for short), Burke further explores the very strange and dangerous world of Milestone. Kealan Patrick Burke is probably the most subtle writer I know in horror today. He builds terror under the surface in this story, slowly ratcheting things up as the story progresses. There's something odd from the first paragraph, something bordering on paranoia that grows into pure dread as the lead character faces his fear. The ending doesn't disappoint!

This novella is a finalist for long fiction in this year's Bram Stoker Awards and is a pitch perfect example of understated, creepy horror. Burke does a great job of capturing that sense of dread so prized in this type of story. Written in the first person point-of-view, the protagonist speaks to the reader of a nearby town, a no-mans-land of sorts, that never returns any who are fool enough to venture there. Thirty Miles South Of Dry County by Kealan Patrick Burke is a novella of friendship, a forgotten secret and a haunted town. A brilliant follow-up short story to Currency Of Souls, once again visiting the creepy town of Milestone and its mysterious pull on certian people who are destined to visit and stay for a while. Highly recommended.
I read this without having read the novel CURRENCY OF SOULS, having been advised this novella was a sort of sequel to, but which also serves as a fine stand alone story. Good advice. This was a deep and satisfying read, tinged with mystery and sadness. The end was quite admirable. Once again, Mr. Burke has shown me, through his mesmerizing prose and seamless storytelling style, that he is an author who deserves all the respect in the world. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
