Thirty Miles South Of Dry County
by
Kealan Patrick Burke (Goodreads Author)
Milestone is not a town that can be found on any map. Those who are aware of the place avoid it, and those who call it home treat it with a respect borne from fear. A once thriving mining town, the legends of myriad horrors operate as a warning to those who seek to cross its borders.

Congratulations to Kealan Patrick Burke for Thirty Miles South of Dry Country appearing on the final ballot for the 2012 Bram Stoker Awards.
For a horror novella, this was spot on. The voice of Warwick Tanner, the story's plot & pacing, and characterizations in general were all polished, phrasing professionally turned, subtly horrifying, and thoroughly entertaining.
At heart, the story is about aging, loneliness, and loss. The creepy aspect feeds on vulnerability, yet, in a way, redeems it....more
Keelan Patrick Burkes’ “Thirty Miles North Of Dry County is a sometimes sad and poignant look at old age, memories, loss and friendship.
Warwick Tanner spends his days on a bench in front of a liquor store with his friend Dick, he has nowhere else to be and no one else in his life. When Dick and the liquor store owner Sven hop in Sven’s beat up old Volkswagen to confront the Mayor of Milestone about what he did to Sven’s store and don’t return.

Milestone is not only the name of the run-down kudzu-covered town that haunts those who live outside its borders, it is a central character in Kealan Patrick Burke's "Thirty Miles South of Dry County," a novella linked to his previously published "Currency of Souls." (The latter of which need not be read to enjoy this haunting little tale.)
While the town is the main player in this heartfelt read, the beauty of the story lies in its narrative, the first-person account of Warwick Tanner, an old ma...more

Another tale from the world created by Kealan Patrick Burke in his novel, "Currency of Souls" 4-stars, too. "Thirty Miles South Of Dry County " features one of the characters we met in the previous work, but the story can certainly be read as a stand-alone novella.
Warrick Tanner, "Tan" to his friends has spent, nearly, the last ten years of his life, hanging with his friend Dick, outside Sven's Liquor & Gas. The establishment is just a bit outside Milestone, a place you wouldn't want to be,...more

This novella was a wonderful tale told in the same style and setting as Kealan Patrick Burke's previous fantastic novel CURRENCY OF SOULS. In "Thrity Miles..." (TMSDC for short), Burke further explores the very strange and dangerous world of Milestone. In CURRENCY OF SOULS, Burke introduces us to what feels to be a highly isolated (and desolate) decaying town of Milestone, where dark miracles happen to unfortunate souls. In CURRENCY, Burke leaves us with the notion that Milestone is perhaps a to...more
Kealan Patrick Burke is probably the most subtle writer I know in horror today. He builds terror under the surface in this story, slowly ratcheting things up as the story progresses. There's something odd from the first paragraph, something bordering on paranoia that grows into pure dread as the lead character faces his fear. The ending doesn't disappoint!
This novella is a fine introduction to this writer--after reading Dry County, immediately buy and read his novel KIN. For a transplanted Irish...more

Recommends it for:
Lovers of slow-burn, creepy spec fic.
This novella is a finalist for long fiction in this year's Bram Stoker Awards and is a pitch perfect example of understated, creepy horror. Burke does a great job of capturing that sense of dread so prized in this type of story. Written in the first person point-of-view, the protagonist speaks to the reader of a nearby town, a no-mans-land of sorts, that never returns any who are fool enough to venture there. It isn't long before this man's last remaining friends do just such a thing and he is c...more
This novella, a sequel to Currency Of Souls, finds Burke at the top of his craft, relating the tale of a man's search for his missing friends in the cursed mining town of Milestone. Burke brings a heartwrenching realism to this dying locale, as the nightmare that dwells within it envelops the reader, revealing dark secrets and darker wonders. This is one road trip you won't soon forget.
This is the sequel to Currency of Souls. This is a story about Warrick Tanner and the haunted city of Milestone. Most people who go to Milestone, either die or never comeback. It is up to Warrick to find his two friends that have disappeared. Tanner knows that his friends have gone to Milestone. Tanner travels to the town of Milestone to find his missing friends. This is one trip that he will never forget. It will haunt him for the rest of his life. This is a novella that I would highly recommend...more
Thirty Miles South Of Dry County by Kealan Patrick Burke is a novella of friendship, a forgotten secret and a haunted town. In TMSODC, Burke makes great use of his fictional town of Milestone (the town also appeared in his novel Currency Of Soul) and when Warwick Tanner, an old man who spent his life hanging out in front of the local liquor store, loses his best friend, he knows of only one place where he can be found, if he could be found at all.

I read this without having read the novel CURRENCY OF SOULS, having been advised this novella was a sort of sequel to, but which also serves as a fine stand alone story. Good advice. This was a deep and satisfying read, tinged with mystery and sadness. The end was quite admirable. Once again, Mr. Burke has shown me, through his mesmerizing prose and seamless storytelling style, that he is an author who deserves all the respect in the world. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
