How do you get desperately needed answers when no one is talking? Who do you trust in a place full of criminals, a place where it’s easy to mistake friends for enemies and enemies for friends? And how is it possible for one girl to seemingly vanish into thin air, especially when the place is surrounded by sixteen foot high electric fences?

"KILL OR BE KILLED"

101 is a dark version of the future where all criminals – no matter the reason for the crime – are locked away in townships to fend for themselves. After Trigg and his sister Ren shoot their abusive father, they are both sentenced to township 101, a place where only the strong survive and the weak must either toughen up or become one of the many casualties of 101.

All the characters in this book complement each other very well. Trigg, peaceful and non-confrontational but willi...more

Ok, to put it simply, 101 was amazing. It is completely captivating from the start. The protagonist Trigg is so relatable and I found myself emotionally invested in the book.

I don't usually like to give away the storyline but feel it's necessary for reviewing this particular book. So here goes: Trigg and his sister Ren are sentenced unfairly to an NAO township (which reminded me of the holocaust style ghettos). Soon after arriving Ren vanishes and Trigg searches for her. Well this search takes...more

I did quite enjoy this book. I read it almost in one sitting which is always a giveaway to me that it is a good story. I liked the idea behind it as it probably wasn't far away from the truth of actual prisons - the set up reminded me of the prison in Prison Break season 3 but obviously with kids and with flowers and trees rather than, uh, mud.

I liked that the book started with the drama but I can't help thinking that I would have liked to have known a little bit more about Trigg and Ren's day...more

Sadly, this story probably hits very close to home with some individuals. It completely enveloped me from the very first page, to the last.

The story was well told, with great character development and a lot of moments that cause heightened emotional response. I have always been infatuated with criminals and the criminal justice system. With what really goes on in prison. As heartbreaking as it is this story was probably very close to the truth.

This book was right up my alley, the feelings of inn...more

It is so intense! I love it, but I have to go bury my head in the sand a bit.
Full on tears as I finished this book…at work no less. I am a freaking mess, runny nose, drippy eyes, ugh! This book pitbulled me at the beginning. It grabbed me by the throat and shook me around forcing me to read, read, read. Then it slowed down, the pitbull relaxed its jaws magically and I could read at my own pace. At the end, it stood there growling at me, scaring me to death because it had a crazy look in its eye....more

101 is an apt name for the prison town at the centre of this book. Straight away there strikes the reader something sinister about the New Age Order and its brand of justice, relegating criminals to fates perhaps worse than incarceration. As a backdrop to one young man's quest to find his sister, this bleak place of lost hope is the perfect setting. I must admit I was emotionally invested in the characters of Ren and Trigg very early. Theirs is a sibling love that you hope will transcend the all...more

Wow, what a ride! From the first page, you are off and running on a pretty wild adventure. Okay, maybe not adventure per say, but a wild story! This is one of those books that really sucks you right in. You want to keep reading until the end. I love a book like this. I basically could not stop reading it and when I had to stop reading I could not stop thinking about it...just waiting until I could get back to reading. Definitely a mark of a good book for me.

This is a dystopian type story about T...more

This was a really good book, intense, gripping, devastating and intense.

Ren is 17 and Trigg is 19, they both live with their abusive father. When Ren shoots the father in the shoulder to save her brothers life, they flee in his car which he promptly reports stolen. Trigg gets a 3 year sentence while Ren ends up with an 8 year sentence. In this society criminals are harshly punished and sent to encampments with no real guards. There are the intake people and a couple guards and electrified fence...more

Trigg and Ren are brother and sister living in an abusive home with their father. One night he begins to beat Trigg so badly, after hitting Ren as well, that both siblings believe this will be the end of Trigg’s life. Instead Ren takes matters into her own hands and as a result the 2 siblings steal their dad’s car and are arrested and put in a prison known as 101. Few to no details are know about this prison, only that it houses the “worst of the worst” offenders. The governmental party in power...more

101 by Margaret Chatwin is told from the POV of Trigg, a teen convicted of grand theft auto while fleeing with his younger sister, Ren, who has shot their abusive father. Both of them, courtesy of the swift and reformed NAO justice system, are sent to a detention facility called Township 101 where the inmates are left to fend for the...more

Where do I even start? I started this book earlier today and finished it the same night. From page one I was completely immersed in Trigg and Ren's story. I'm a sucker for these Dystopian stories, and 101 delivered the goods. I loved the writing, the character dynamics, the building of the relationships between characters. (view spoiler)[Especially between Trigg and Bobby Joe, the build up between these 2 was really well written, I was just so sad that their story couldn't continue beyond the gr...more

Let me just start out by saying this was wonderful, I enjoyed reading every last bit of it
Trigg and his sister (Ren) get sent to township 101 when they try to stand up to their abusive father. Trigg and Ren get separated, girls live to one side and the boys live to other side kind of thing. Trigg promises he'll find her, and that's when the drama starts..
I loved seeing Trigg's character grow. Trigg is the person that's not a fighter--he's just a nice person, who doesn't know how to fight. So whe...more

Disclaimer: The fact that I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review has not affected my rating.

Rating Clarification: 3.5

For me, 101 is kind of hard to review. For the most part, I did enjoy it, and on an enjoyment level, this book would rate a solid 4 or 4.5. However, probably due to the fact that I've read so many dystopian novels or novels with a lot of action, 101 didn't seem to stand out as much. That's why I downgraded the rating to 3.5.

(Book read and reviewed for{Read It & Reap 71} in theShut Up And Read group.)

After years of abuse at the hands of their father, Trigg and his sister Ren do the unthinkable: they defend themselves... and are taken down for this by the expeditive judicial system of the New Age Order, which sends them both to prison town 101. As Trigg decides to go looking for his sister, and discovers quickly that she has actually disappeared from the time of her arrivel, he gets to know more and more about th...more

This was an interesting book. The action starts immediately and we are taken into the life of Trigg and his younger sister Ren. They have an abusive father and when they decide to stand up for themselves, things end up going wrong. Ren and Trigg are sentenced by the NAO to spend time in township 101. The justice and prison system has taken a harder stance on all types of crime and although there is a clear benefit to the greater public, there are definite issues that result in the townships.

First of all this was given to me as a R2R so I will give my very honest opinion of the book ^^. Oh, and thank you so much for the opportunity!
The writing skills of the author are really appealing for me as a reader, and also the topic of the story. The first chapters really made me interested to know more about this “dystopian world”. The main points are well focused, well develop and the characters are appealing in their characteristic ways (as logical).

This is a great, great book. The story is really creative and well written, I was dragged into it and if it weren't for the thousand tests I had this week and an awful flu, it would've been a one sitting read.

The story goes pretty much like this: Trigg, 19, and Ren, 17 are abused by their father, until Ren shoots him and they go to prison. The prison (Township 101) basically consists in another city, only...more

Margaret Chatwin invited me to be part of her blog tour - see http://todayinshenaya.blogspot.com - and I'm so glad she did.

I really enjoyed this book. The opening is riveting and it drew me in instantly. And although, for me, there was a small slump once Trigg and Ren reached 101, the book quickly exploded into a nail-biting page turner. The characters are strong, the suspense high, and the premise intriguing - a world without mercy, only justice. I really like Trigg - first person narrator - a...more

5 stars for this book. Well written and the story of Ren and Trigg is something that is happening around us. The abuse and the injustice was really heartbreaking and it is really unfortunate to think that things like these don't just happen in stories although obviously the part about the town 101 is on an extreme angle. At first the antagonists were clearly the father and the NAO and some readers would expect that Trigg and the other inmates would go against them instead but the role of the ant...more

I read this book to review it; I do not review too many books. I read a lot of YA Paranormal books and I needed a little break from the Supernatural books so I found this book and I am glad that I read it. I really enjoyed it and read it in 2 days. I could not put it this book down.

About the story, the main characters, Trigg (19 and told from is POV) and his younger sister Ren (17) live in an abusive home with their abusive father, their mother died a few years ago. One night Trigg gets home rea...more

I am happily going to say I really liked this book! I was instantly drawn into Trigg's life and felt as though I was living every moment he was. The book synopsis however is misleading in my opinion. Sure, Ren had disappeared, but not in the way I was thinking. As I was narrowing toward the end I wasn't feeling confident things would be tidied up in time and questioned whether a sequel was in my future- because I HAD to know how everything played out! Thru-out the book I'd find myself leaning i...more

Teenagers Trigg and his younger sister Ren were sent away from their abusive father to a facility that many people don't come back from. Although their crime was committed in self defense, the New Age Order (NAO) justice system believed in swift justice, no mercy and no distinction between crimes. They were placed in township 101 with every type of criminal possible. Unlike a traditional prison system, these inmates had been released into an abandoned village surrounded by armed guards and elect...more

How do I start this? This book left me feeling very sad and empty. I don't really do huge spoilers so all I'm going so say is the scene towards the end was so raw, so emotional, that I actually dropped a tear.

Mild spoilers ahead. This book is about the journey of Trigg and his sister Ren who ended up serving time for shooting their abusive father. The go to a place that in my mind reminded me of a broke down dusty ghost town. After that it's an all out fight for survival for the both of them. I...more

I am currently reading a lot of dystopian-style books, and so when I saw this book description, I thought, "I need to read this". Let me tell you, 101 did not let me down! I liked the story line and the characters! They were really easy to relate to and I liked how they developed throughout the story.

So why not 5 stars? I'm actually not 100% certain myself. I liked this book a lot, but I think I just didn't empathize with the characters as much as I normally do. I felt the beginning was almost t...more

Just when I thought i had already found my favorite book by Margaret..I then read this one it is soo good. I could see this book being made into a movie... It read this book in about 8 hours total because I could not stop reading because it was so good. I loved the characters. And the new justice system they had to deal with I thought was a little scary lol... I was in suspense the whole time I felt a range of emotion there were times I was worried for them, happy, angry for the was they were tr...more

This book was amazing! From the very beginning I was sucked into Trigg and Ren's lives and I couldn't put it down. It was well written and the story line flowed perfectly. I also appreciated the fact that I was kept guessing what would happen next. I felt somewhat disconnected from the characters and I wasn't able to get emotionally involved (maybe it was the length), however, this didn't keep me from enjoying every single page. I loved the ending and I felt like Ms. Chatwin wrapped up the story...more

I'm such an awesome judge of books! Most of the time anyway. I won Sweet so Fragile from FirstReads awhile back and loved it. When I saw Chatwin had two other books out, this and Taking the Fall I knew I wanted to read them. And now I'm going to read Taking the Fall as soon as I'm in the mood for that kind of book. I have no doubt it'll be just as good as the other two I've read.
My memory is really bad but I think I've already told the author - if not I meant to - that she has to somehow get the...more

When I first started reading this book, I felt it jumped into the action almost too quickly. I had a hard time feeling for Trigg and Ren when it came to the situation they were in with their father. Once, I started to learn more about Trigg throughout the course of the book I found myself wanting to continue reading non-stop. By the end of the book I was crying. For a book to get me crying... it takes a lot.

101 by Margaret Chatwin grabbed me from the first page and did not let go 'til the end. I loved the characters for their devotion and persistence. The world was fascinating and thought provoking. So much happened in this book and I wanted more, more of the characters and their lives. I would definitely recommend this book (many of my Goodreads friends enjoy dystopian) and I will be looking for more from this author.
