Chase Summers: Golden boy. Beautiful girlfriend, good friends, and a promising future.

Nobody knows the real Chase.

Chase Summers has a razor blade to his wrist and the smell of his lover’s goodbye clinging to his skin. He has a door in his heart so frightening he’d rather die than open it, and the lies he’s used to block it shut are thinning with every forbidden touch. Cha...more

Damn you, Amy Lane. I had things to do today, plans, obligations. I had my own writing too, and I left my guys waiting in the middle of a freaking sex scene to finish this book and watch you bring Chase and Tommy safely home.

Chase is a very young man who is trying to be a good person. He tries so hard to do the right thing, while locking his fears and pain and demons away in his head behind a red door. He's gay and he can't admit it, can't even think about it. Then a comment from a friend sugges...more

I had three thoughts when I finished this book:

1. I LOVED this book too much, and damn I'm a glutton for angst, because I'm actually giddy.
2. Amy Lane may not be for everyone, but her books ROCK MY WORLD
3. I wonder when the next one is coming out?

Now the story...

At times during this book, I actually found it hard to read and not in a bad way, but because there is such profound raw emotion and heartbreak hiding behind the persona that is Chase Summers. He is 20 years old and in my eyes he was still a boy...a boy that lost his way in life 14 years earlier when the tragic death of his mother leaves him with the...more

If you plan on reading this book, I warn you that you’ll spend most of the time being mad. Or sad. Or both. This book is about Chase. He’s a self-centered bastard and the whole fucking universe revolves around him. He’s a moron and a scumbag and a coward and a liar and a douche bag and goddammit, I hated him!!! And you’ll be stuck with him for more than 300 pages.

I think it’s pretty clear by now that this isn’t a smart and insightful review, but some very subjective ramblings (god, I ha...more

Chase is a college student, working on his degree. A baseball jock. The All American boy. Struggling, living with his girlfriend Mercy, the two work hard to maintain an apartment, and school, and plan, and save for a future.

Chase comes from a harsh background. Raised by his father after his mother committed suicide when he was a young boy, he’s struggled to be the perfect son. His father’s scorn drives him to be more, have more, make no missteps.

So when his friends mention a local gay filmmaking...more

I had to really push to finish this book. I don't think I can recall a book that had so much piled up angst or crappy situations for the MC's. Unfortunately, I felt zero sympathy for the characters & found myself rolling my eyes at several points. For me, one dramatic situation after the other book ended by tears loses its poinancy. I can't empathize for the situations because there isn't any rise and fall. It just feels a bit manipulative for the reader to feel bad for the characters. Unfor...more

Something A Little Different...(In The End A DNF)

ETA 9/11/12:
The decision to DNF this book was a hard one. I tried extremely hard not to feel disgusted with the character of Chase, and for a moment it worked. In the end though I just COULD NOT feel anything but angry with him. The writing in this book is good. Amy Lane has been doing this for a long time and is obviously dedicated to her craft. Unfortunately, the writing, for me, couldn't save this book.

At the beginning of the book I worried abo...more

Chase is a caretaker and it's a wonder that he is. His father was physically, mentally and emotionally abusive. He could have repeated the cycle of pain but instead he turned it all inward but gives the world his best face, his dearest heart. He cares for Mercy, even at the end, even bleeding, he lets her know that her car, the apartment, all taken care of. He could not have given her an easier out, made the transition away from him any easier. Tommy, the love of his life, he makes sure there ar...more

A very powerful and emotional read. I had no idea the journey I was going on when I started this book, but it was one filled with unbelievable high and lows, amazing characters and a story that damn near ripped my heart out of my chest.

Slowly the layers are peeled back on Chase’s past as his story progresses in the present, and you can understand why he has chosen to hide behind the image of being straight. The guilt that this boy carried around for most of his life was unimaginable, and the fa...more

You know that song "One of these things is not like the other..."? Yeah, that would be me. I know, GR M/M readers, you all LOVED this book. Me, gosh, I had a hard time getting through it.

It's totally an "it's not you, it's me" situation.

"Chase in Shadow" has all the things that should make a good book: romance, emotion, angst, drama...but it just didn't do it for me. Frankly, it was too long, too dragged out, too repetitive (porn scene, girlfriend scene, boyfriend scene, repeat...), a...more

I don't know how to review this book. It was one of the most emotionally powerful books I have read in a very long time.
It took me a while to get into the story, but then it was a case of telling the kids to look after themselves as Mum wasn't stopping until this book was finished.
There was a great cast of characters, with different personalities, who I enjoyed, but Chase was unbelievable. What a heartbreaking lead he was.
All I can say is, if this book is on your tbr, move it up and read it now....more

I wish I had the emotional writing depth to really do reviews justice, but I don't. Here I go trying it anyway!

Amy Lane has such a strong hold on flawed characters and she always delivers them as if you can feel, taste and KNOW them. She gives us this with Chase in Shadow. With that said, this book did not make me break down for days the way I did with A Solid Core of Alpha, but it does pack a punch in line with her other books, such as The Locker Room and Promise books. I would not be sad if w...more

It’s no secret in the publishing world that Amy Lane can write. The topic doesn’t matter, because she will write an angst filled romance with whatever is at hand and just make it shine.

Chase is a young man with so much baggage my heart ached for him. At first glance it might seem as exaggeration, but as you keep on reading, seeing his struggle and his need to be loved and accepted you just have to break do...more

Amy Lane is a GODDESS. Chase reminds me WHY I read this genre. Tommy is the reason this genre makes it impossible for men in my life to live up to this genre (clearly I've mental issues of my own). I've been down many of Chase's roads and while it made it achingly painful to read for me, it was also dealt with in a believable way and makes me want to give Amy Lane the biggest hug for understanding. I honestly have nothing other than an emotional review for this. I'm at a loss for words. The anti...more

Opening line: “Did you have fun?" Mercy asked as Chase negotiated the slick Sacramento streets in the dark."

Wow, what an emotionally draining, yet ultimately amazing read. My first from author Amy Lane but not my last for sure, however it may take a while before I’m up to facing this sort of angst again. Yeah Chase In Shadow is heartbreaking and beautiful and damaged and gorgeous and just such a freaking hot mess, I won’t be forgetting him for a long time to come.

I went into this book with pretty low expectations, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's a hard read. Chase isn't the world's nicest person. He makes decisions that hurt other people, but his actions aren't born out of malice, or any sort of narcissism.

Chase is a deeply damaged, almost broken man. He doesn't want to hurt, or burden anyone. He made a promise to someone he truly cares for, and the thought of breaking that promise, and hurting Mercy is tearing him apart. He doesn't w...more

Wah hoo! A bike! Finally a bike AND action figures AND video games and expectations and joy!

Ok, after trying and failing to come up with a review, I will just stick with a rating of 3.5 stars. There are so many others that have done excellent reviews, so I will defer to them. Sad thing is, I agree with both the 5 star reviews and the 2 star reviews. I love me some Amy Lane and I live for angst, but simply put this one was just TOO MUCH for me. For me, it wasn't angsty, it was nerve wracking. It...more

How much is too much? Well, the answer to that for Chase Summers is a hell of a lot...and just when you think it's finally gonna work out he gets the kitchen sink thrown at him too. I have to say...at about 89% I had a huge "WTF??? You have got to be kidding me" moment...HUGE!!!

This story starts out angsty and stays there for most of the book. You get mad at Chase, you feel bad for Chase, you get mad at the world for giving him a crap life with a piece of crap dad. But, you root for hi...more

An emotional roller coaster, the support beams being damaged and hollow from years of angst and strife. The car representing either one of the damaged gentlemen that are Chase and Tommy (sorry Chance & Tango for you Johnnies' fans). The emotions run so high and drop so low, frantic, frenetic, crazy, lustful, passionate, crazy, insane, so good it hurts, so bad it's good.

It’s life, Chase. I’m pretty sure you’ve figured out by now that it’s not always pretty.

This book! It. Killed. Me. I am dead. When they find my lifeless body with my Nook clutched to my chest, someone will pick it up, see Chase’s story, read those first words and get sucked in. When they are done, they will die too. Amy Lane’s gorgeous, heartbreaking, soul wrenching, emotionally exhausting and fantastic writing is the gay romance author’s version of the video from The Ring. Read her words...more

Work. This book took so much work to get through. It took me longer than it should have because I had to stop every 3 minutes or so to take a deep breath. I kept having to remind myself to breeeeaaaathe through the angst. Aaaaaannnnd that sounds a lot like labor. But, hey, that might work.

While reading I’m sobbing and cringing and so full of emotions that I’m thinking I’m NEVER picking up another Amy Lane book again! Then when it’s all over I’m sighing with giddiness thinking that I can’t wait...more

Amy Lane, Amy Lane, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

1. I love the cover of Chase in Shadow. It is more "real" looking than I have seen from you in the past. It is also dark and a little scary-looking. Just like the inside of Chase's mind!

2. I love that you have created more characters that are (to quote Donkey from Shrek) like onions. They appear to be solid, but as you masterfully remove one layer after another, we see that they are made up of thin, sometimes pellucid parts that on...more

As usual with an Amy Lane read, I loved it!!! What an intense and gut-wrenching story! Chase had years and years of emotional baggage waging a war inside his head. He tried to do the right thing, to build the perfect future, to ease some of the guilt he was feeling, but in the end his life was one big lie. Phenomenal writing... present tense mixed with flashbacks and Chase’s internal dialogs. Not to mention some gay-for-pay porn scenes thrown in! Tommy is amazing! Even though he has his own issu...more

I’ve only read one novel by Amy Lane and it completely gutted me. I keep meaning to read the rest of her work but something else always gets in the way. When I saw this book available on NetGalley I grabbed it knowing that I’d probably toss everything else in my life aside until I read every last grueling word. And that’s exactly what happened. It’s probably a good thing most books are easier to put down because my dogs would be mighty skinny.

Chase in Shadow is told entirely from Chase’s point o...more

Well, it is 200+ pages, so it's got to be filled with something... The thought that this repressed near homophobe self-hating kid would work in gay porn for money is totallly ridiculous. The thing young men fear most is discovery, that their world will come crashing down. And people in closets don't let it all hang out for everyone to see, in the hopes that bec folks ar straight, they won't see any gay porn. So, my buy-infrom the start is kind of low...

BUT! I am reading it and the porn world in...more

I am still reeling from this book. If Goodreads would give us more stars, I’d give them all to Chase in Shadow, but I guess I have to settle for just five measly stars. It somehow doesn’t feel like enough though.

I loved this story so much I want to tell everyone to read it, but I feel I need to put a warning here first. This is an m/m romance. There are a lot of m/m sex scenes and they are pretty descriptive, so if you have a problem with that you probably won’t like the book. If you don’t have...more

I could tell who wrote Chase in Shadow just by reading it. No need to check the author's name on the cover. Everything about it screamed Amy Lane. It couldn't be anyone else who wrote it. And I like that she has this very recognizable style.

I think this was a little like The Locker Room or the Talker(there was even a tiny bit of connection to it!)books, but not as sad. I managed to finish it without crying.

This one was a very emotional read. M-M have the same emotional hangups that every other relationship have.

I knew going in that this book was going to be an emotional ride. But Dang!!! I was just sad a lot. With that said, I enjoyed this book a lot and found myself exhaling the breath that I didn’t know that I was holding. If you enjoy reading books that unravel like peeling an onion, then you will love this book.
