RATING EDITED TO INCLUDE ADDED EPILOGUE
I really liked the first half of this book and STRONGLY HATED the second half... except for the epilogue which was wonderful.
Luc and Robbie meet as foster kids when they are placed in the same home together at age 12 and they grow up first becoming friends and then eventually in their early 20s, lovers. But then in waltzed a (literally) psychotic blond bitch of a lawyer who single-handedly completely and utterly f*cks up pretty much every aspect of their...more

This was actually a book I couldn’t put down. The writing wasn’t top notch but the storyline was excellent! The relationship between the leads was very sweet. Watching them fall in love from childhood to adulthood was fragrant to watch. Then out of nowhere comes the sick and twisted other woman who did whatever it took to get her paws on the hero and succeeded to some extent, so expect cheating if you are interested in reading this book. That took some of the sugar away from all that s...more

After witnessing the horrific & traumatizing accident that kills her parents, Robbie Byrne is placed in a foster home where she finds a friend and her first crush personified by her polarizing foster brother, Luc Cintrone. We watch their relationship grow through different phases and ages from awkward pre-teens to thriving young adults with quite a few obstacles and roadblocks in between. As usual from this author, the characters are so vividly drawn and their chemistry is so palp...more

Talk about an angsty/emotional romance! I've always told my GR friends that i love a book with all sorts of emotional ups and downs as long as i get my HEA in the end to make up for the HELL an author puts me through and Jolyn Palliata did not disappoint on either count!
This book felt like a mix of a few favorites...it had the sweetness of The Sweet Gum Tree (when they're growing up together, Luc takes Robbie under his wing, even when they're older, he's still always looking out f...more

This book was a total conundrum. I've been sitting on this review for a while now because I honestly didn't know what to think. I even asked some of my fellow reviewers to read the book so they could tell me what to think. So here's what I think I think....

One sure sign for me that I have loved reading a book is when I notice I only have a few pages left & slow my reading right down, even going back over lines I've just read just to prolong the experience!
That's how I felt about this story.
I loved how the author started this story off when Robbie & Luc were kids, on through their teenage years & up into adulthood. You got to know them both so well & understood the obstacles in their way all the better.

This is the first book I’ve read that I had to sleep on before I gave it a rating. I loved the tragic storyline and the way it was written. The ONLY thing that took me away from this story a bit was the Payten storyline. It left me feeling a little bleak after reading the book because there was such a beautiful love story developing out of an already tragic storyline... Although I didn't care for Payten, it was still well written and developed.
With that said, I read for enjoyment. The story suck...more

Honestly, this is one story readers will either love it or hate it, personally, I loved the story. It was a definite page turner and I can see myself reading the story over and over again. Robbie was a wonderful heroine. Luc was a very confusing hero for me; I adored him one minute and hated him the next. Payten I despised from the minute she was introduced. The drama within the story might be a little over the top for some readers, however I found it enjoying, not to mention it added wonderful...more
this book sucked me in right from the beginning. I loved it all, all the hurt, all the love and everything in between.
Luc and Robbie seemed fated to be together but the universe is twisted and ruined their fate.
drug sex and murder played a huge part of all their angst.
through it all Luc FINALLY learned what or actually who was important.
I didn't give it the full 5 stars that this book could have gotten cuz there should have been something more to what happens to payten. it was almost too eas...more

I enjoyed reading Luc & Robbie's story. They loved each other since they were kids. The story was a bit on the short side for me. I truly disliked Payten (what a psycho!!) I thought that Payten's evilness lacked a little since in the beginning she would just hang out at Luc's bar and I couldn't get good insight on her nature. Even the way Robbie described to Lizbeth how Payten answered the door half naked at Luc's was odd. Not only until the end of the story could I see Payten's true evil!...more
THIS STARTS OUT OKAY, BUT THRN IT GETS CRAZY
Luc and Robbie were both foster children, and spent many years living with a great couple the Lawsons. Even when they became adults they remained close. Robbie (she's the girl) has always been in love with Luc, though he seemed oblivious to that, and Robbie didn't want to push it and lose what they did have.
Then about 40% in Luc starts to realise what Robbie means to him. He is part owner in a bar, with his best friend Conrad, things are coming togethe...more

A review described it as Callum and Harper meets The Opportunist. How could I resist? I basically bypassed my TBR pile consisting of probably over 50 books. You know a book is good if it's relatively short (when you think long: think Avoiding Commitment/Thoughtless/The Mighty Storm) yet the build up to the full story feels oh-so-gradual and well-developed. The Opportunist fell along this category.

"There were reasons why no one had ever fallen in love with him, and Robbie would know those reasons better than anyone. To love him was to slit her own throat"

Robbie Byrne and Lucian Anthony Cintrone (Luc) come into each other’s lives when they are both 12 years old. Robbie becomes a part of the foster care system when both her parents die in an accident traumatizing her for life. Luc, who has been a part of the system for far too long after being abandoned by his parents is the rebellious sort, the one who uses cuss words in every sentence and has an attitude a mile wide.

WOW!!! This was my first take from the author, and I'm glad I came across this book!!! I've always loved a story which starts when the MC's are just between the ages 8-12 and their relationship develops over time wherein we see their growth and maturity in handling their relationship. And this story did just that!
And I LOVE LUC FOR BEING THE OVERPROTECTIVE JERK to Robbie. BUT......BUT......I HATED HIS GUTS FOR DOING THAT TO ROBBIE!!! I MEAN HOW COULD HE??? THE NERVE DAMN HIM I WANTED TO SMACK H...more

Sigh!
Just finished reading a modern love story, and I kind of feel like I got dealt a bad bag of crack (figuratively speaking) It was all highs in the beginning but around the middle it went so far downhill I was seriously wondering it the author got dropped on her head mid story.
Following Robbie and Luc's journey to adulthood together was very satisfying, there was plenty of sexual tension and amusing banter and more than anything the anticipation of where their relationship was headed made me...more

I was privileged to be asked to be a beta reader for this book, so thank you for giving me the opportunity!
I loved Robbie from the beginning & felt sorry for her. Luc -- It took me a little longer to even like him, but as the story went on, I could understand where his attitude was coming from, and gradually began liking him, too. I did not like Payten from the get-go.
This was a new twist on a love triangle. Robbie's been in love with Luc since she was a teenager... Luc feels the same about...more

I've read this before, last year I think before it was published. The first time I read it, I rushed it but because now I have it on my kindle I read it steadily and enjoyed it properly this time round.
I don't usually read the same books twice because I know what's going to happen so what's the point? But even though I knew what was going to happen my eyes were still glued to the page and I stayed up late reading this. Just shows how good it is.

Prior to this, the only other Jolyn Palliata I’d read was her novella CONNECTED which I adored and raved about to all my friends. This would be her first full length novel for me and I hoped it would match my very high expectations.
Thankfully, it did. Phew!
Robbie Byrne loses her parents in a freak accident and is put in foster care at the tender age of 12. Sharing her foster home is the foul mouthed cocky Luc Cintrone. Straight away, he was everything Robbie wasn’t.
