And she is fairly confident Luc will eventually see things her way…one way or another.

My Thoughts:
Simply...I LOVED THIS BOOK. Ms. Palliata did such a beautiful job transforming Robbie and Luc's relationship through their tween, teen, and adult years. The transitions were simple and smooth and the reader was able to clearly understand and appreciate the depth of their emotions and the strength of their relationship as it developed over time.

I will not go into the details of the story because I want future readers to be pleasantly surprised...and you will be. Robbie and Luc are such interesting and complex characters, as is their relationship. Their relationship was very reminiscent of those of the H/h in Fifty Shades of Grey and Beautiful Disaster. Make no mistake, this is not a copy and paste deal. Palliata did not just transfer the concept of their broken relationships to her characters. No, what she did was far more interesting and unique...with a twist. Boy, with a twist.

I found the primary characters were extremely likable. I bit my nails for them up to the very end but was rooting for them the whole time. They desperately needed a HEA. The secondary characters supported the story very well. The villianess was truly vile and detestable. I absolutely hated her. She was very well written.

Excellent story!

Update 4-19-12
So, with some prompting from readers, Ms. Palliata wrote an epilogue to Robbie and Luc's story. It nicely summed up their relationship and resolved outstanding issues that may have caused angst among some readers. In it we see growth in Luc and complete trust in him from Robbie. Simply, it was outstanding!

I have no problem with books with obstacles being thrown in for the main couple. But this was just too much for me. And I draw the line at (view spoiler). BUT the author added in an epilogue that did redeem a lot of Luc's actions in my eyes especially since (view spoiler)

My original rating of 2 stars has been adjusted to 2.5 because despite everything, Robbie and Luc did love each other a lot. Luc especially was pretty messed up by his childhood. But for a hero character, it went a little too far into the messed-up side of the line for me. But I did absolutely love the first half of the book, I loved Robbie and Luc together. I loved seeing them grow up and grow closer as they got older.... But with the way the second half of the book panned out, I'd want to give that part 0 stars. I just hated the total f*cking up of their lives.. The added epilogue did help a lot with the sting of the second half of the book, but it still didn't sit completely right with me.

All this aside though, the author has a wonderful writing style that just sucks you right into the story and makes you keep wanting to turn the pages even if all you really want to do if throw your book/ereader at the wall and/or reach in and throttle the characters. I didn't like the plot of this book, but I'm still looking forward to reading more of her books.

Lets put it this way, if her writing didn't make me feel so strongly for the characters, I probably wouldn't be as mad at them lol

This was actually a book I couldn’t put down. The writing wasn’t top notch but the storyline was excellent! The relationship between the leads was very sweet. Watching them fall in love from childhood to adulthood was fragrant to watch. Then out of nowhere comes the sick and twisted other woman who did whatever it took to get her paws on the hero and succeeded to some extent, so expect cheating if you are interested in reading this book. We watch their relationship grow through different phases and ages from awkward pre-teens to thriving young adults with quite a few obstacles and roadblocks in between. As usual from this author, the characters are so vividly drawn and their chemistry is so palpable you have to remind yourself they are fictional characters.

Approximately half of the book is sweetness and light (much like introductory Robbie to my thinking) and the second half is the direct opposite (representative of introductory Luc to me). I was extremely annoyed when the leads took separate vacations (her to Stupid-ville and him to Idiot-burg), but loved them together. What’s a love triangle without a 3rd person? (Well it’s not a love triangle.) The third person here is Payten Carmichael and Payten is determined to make the world her oyster and has the funds and the audacity to go as far as her mind will take her. Suffice it to say, Payten does not go gentle into that good night.

Other pluses to me included how risky it was to make your hero do things that border on unforgivable and bring him back to redemption; another was how great an unapologetically deplorable & diabolically despicable villain Peyton really is. I found myself hard put to not be passionate about this character as well – in a different direction but passionate nonetheless. Cynic that I am, I didn’t have an iota of faith that the villain was anything other what she turned out to be – a nest of wasps at a picnic.

What didn’t work well for me was Payten. I thought – great character but the introduction should have been earlier especially in light of how pivotal the character was. Because of the late intro she felt shoe-horned in and unbalanced the book. Again related to the Payten character but the shoe-horning resulted in plot holes (IMHO).

Ms. Palliata puts quite a bit of humanity in her writing and runs the complete gamut of emotions; in fact she does well with all of the standard mechanics that make a story. If you’ve not read some of her works it might be time to give yourself a little treat. (less)

This is the first book I’ve read that I had to sleep on before I gave it a rating. I loved the tragic storyline and the way it was written. The ONLY thing that took me away from this story a bit was the Payten storyline. It left me feeling a little bleak after reading the book because there was such a beautiful love story developing out of an already tragic storyline... Although I didn't care for Payten, it was still well written and developed.

Honestly, this is one story readers will either love it or hate it, personally, I loved the story. It was a definite page turner and I can see myself reading the story over and over again. this book sucked me in right from the beginning. I loved it all, all the hurt, all the love and everything in between.
Luc and Robbie seemed fated to be together but the universe is twisted and ruined their fate.
drug sex and murder played a huge part of all their angst.
through it all Luc FINALLY learned what or actually who was important.

I enjoyed reading Luc & Robbie's story. They loved each other since they were kids. The story was a bit on the short side for me. I truly disliked Payten (what a psycho!!) I thought that Payten's evilness lacked a little since in the beginning she would just hang out at Luc's bar and I couldn't get good insight on her nature. THIS STARTS OUT OKAY, BUT THRN IT GETS CRAZY

Luc and Robbie were both foster children, and spent many years living with a great couple the Lawsons. Even when they became adults they remained close. A review described it as Callum and Harper meets The Opportunist. How could I resist? I basically bypassed my TBR pile consisting of probably over 50 books. Sigh!

Just finished reading a modern love story, and I kind of feel like I got dealt a bad bag of crack (figuratively speaking) It was all highs in the beginning but around the middle it went so far downhill I was seriously wondering it the author got dropped on her head mid story.

Following Robbie and Luc's journey to adulthood together was very satisfying, there was plenty of sexual tension and amusing banter and more than anything the anticipation of where their relationship was headed made me...more

Following Robbie and Luc's journey to adulthood together was very satisfying, there was plenty of sexual tension and amusing banter and more than anything the anticipation of where their relationship was headed made me squirm in my seat several times. BUTTT, (and its a humongous butt, I mean when this butt sits on a bus, it sits next to EVERYBODY!!)when the very anticipated adulthood finally arrived (adulthood being 22 years of age) it amounted to nothing but about 3 steamy sex scenes, a nice bar setting, and the whole plot from days of our lives with a little the bold and the beautiful mixed in.

If you've never watched those soap operas I'll fill you in;
Mary loves Stefan who is her long lost cousin and Marys friend the evil Amanda lures Stefan to go on a trip with her, where where she proceeds to wipe his memory, get herself impregnated and convince him his name is Kermit. Mary dutifully waits for Stefan, while Stefan is diligently shagging Amanda on a cruise ship in Ibiza.

Ok so this is NOT the story line in A modern love story, but REALLY!! it could have been.

The main reason I even gave this book 2 stars is solely based on the first half of the book that I very very much enjoyed and would actually recommend to read on a saturday when feeling bored and in need of some pointless braincandy (except for occasional moments when I actually felt a slight tug in my uncompromizing heart.)

Mrs or Ms Palliata, please go back in time and undo the second half!! and I'll give you a solid 3.5, stars, or atleast tell me where you got dropped on your head so I can follow in your footsteps and hopefully delete half of the book from my memory!!

Im actually exhausted from this post-bookfailiure rant.. so enought said!

I know he was tricked. I know he was set up. I know he was adamant about not being interested in anybody else and I know he would have never made the first move without what the other woman did.

But I do not for all the other times. I wanted to make myself forgive him, but...more I have never in my life been more weird-ed out. And really kind of sad.

I am not even having this much of a problem with his care after Payten lied she was pregnant. I can understand a man not being able to distinguish how to care for a child separately from its mother. I do. But I don't see it as the cause for Robby leaving him again. I see it as an extension of a problem. That problem being his connection to Payten.
Even if it was fabricated in the beginning, even thou she prayed on his weaknesses, the bottom line was-most of it were his decisions. He played house. He went along with the sex. Nothing with the OW was a one time occurrence. It was a full fledged relationship AFTER he finally hooked up with the love of his life and DURING his relationship with her. I don’t care how lonely he was. I don't care what and why. And I don't even care if he hurt. Because this showed how he lashed out when hurt. Even if the hurt was self-inflicted. And I can’t see him as completely redeemable. The author wanted him to be. This is why she made his first step in to adultery a forced one. But I am just sorry. His cameos told me about his connection to Robbie but I just saw the way he used whipped cream with some other chick that practically moved in with him. On the other hand, he found dating the love of his life foreign and strange because he never did it before.
Well, after reading it all, I still do not have the wish to stick around and find out what more bad decisions he can make. And being such a bundle of weird thought processes and insecurities he is going to fuck up again. It may not be cheating, but something is bound to happen. And something is again going to be coming first instead of Robbie.
So…I wish this story did not have a happy ending. Because there are flawed heroes and there are people you just can take back.

This book reminded me of ‘Doing the right thing’ by Barbara Elsborg. Only that author made me smile when the heroine found true happiness WITH ANOTHER HERO.
This is just a story about falling back on to second best because of something that was between you. Yes, some loves are strong forever. But this just reminds me of women that stay with their high school boyfriends. Not out of love, but because they think there is nobody else out there or maybe they wont find him in time for the whole nine yards of children and white picket fences.
All this said, the book was written well and entertaining. I am bumping back stars because of the hero that could not explain his actions for real and did not grovel.
(sliding a engagement ring on a girl in a coma is just not enough. Especially if the coma patient is in the hospital because the crazy person you cheated with tried to kill her)
For those who like broken loves with second chances and all around drama in their love stories, this is the book for you.

P.S. The uber, over the top villainess was just weird. We can say crazy, and we can say 'Wow! Look out, here comes Predator-only with a tutu!' On the other hand, I wish I read a book with reversed roles, with a crazy villain that nobody can see trough. There are some semblance of this in other books but never does the heroine….you know…cheat. I am tired of all heroines being chaste. The one in this story included.

In this story Robbie becomes an orphan when her parents are killed in a rockslide while the family is on a road trip. When the state cannot find her family she enters the foster care system. Fortunately she enters a wonderful foster family. Her foster parents, although only living with her for four years become a second set of parents to her. When she enters their home she also meets Luc, their foster son. He helps her survive and learn to live with the realities of being a foster child.

When tragedy strikes the happy foster family they are split up. As teenagers in the system they have the typical difficulties, but manage to handle things well together, as they live near one another and go to the same school.

Luc drops out of high school to get his GED and work so that he can become independent and better help Robbie.

Due to her horrible foster parent situation he helps her leave her foster home at 18 and gives her the support she needs as she transitions to college. Robbie and Luc remain friends through the entire process with an underlying sexual tension.

As the two become adults their love for one another really grows and their attraction to one another blossoms into full fledged lust. Because they don't want to ruin their relationship and because they care for each other so much they take a long time to realize the reality of their attraction and become a couple.

The book lost me after this point. I really became disappointed as the author added a strange murder mystery twist to the story with a character who murders her parents, drugs and seduces Luc, cons Robbie, and tries to kill Robbie. Although the idea of this strange twist didn't seem terrible, it just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the story.

Although the book wasn't horrible, it seemed to take a good first half of one book and connect it with the second half of an entirely different type of book.(less)

I loved Robbie from the beginning & felt sorry for her. Luc -- It took me a little longer to even like him, but as the story went on, I could understand where his attitude was coming from, and gradually began liking him, too. I did not like Payten from the get-go.

Shelves: possessive, cheating-hero

A Modern Love Story is one of my all time favorite cheating hero book.

Okay, it's been a while since I read this- but I remember staying up so late to just finished it. It sucked me in right from the beginning. This was another book that I have a love/hate relationship with. It triggered a lot of emotions in me that after reading it- I felt so drained!

Robbie and Luc's story was amazing. I loved seeing them grow up and discover their feelings for one another. The sexual tension kept me on the edge...more

WOW! This cover is misleading :)
But this book is just Awesome!
It was another book I have a love/hate relationship with.

I loved it. I really did - I even stayed up until 1:30 in the morning so I could finish it - it dragged me in, stirred up my emotions, and I wasn't going to stop until I was finished :)

I've read this before, last year I think before it was published. The first time I read it, I rushed it but because now I have it on my kindle I read it steadily and enjoyed it properly this time round.

I don't usually read the same books twice because I know what's going to happen so what's the point? But even though I knew what was going to happen my eyes were still glued to the page and I stayed up late reading this. Just shows how good it is.

Prior to this, the only other Jolyn Palliata I’d read was her novella CONNECTED which I adored and raved about to all my friends. This would be her first full length novel for me and I hoped it would match my very high expectations.

Thankfully, it did. Phew!

Robbie Byrne loses her parents in a freak accident and is put in foster care at the tender age of 12. Sharing her foster home is the foul mouthed cocky Luc Cintrone. Straight away, he was everything Robbie wasn’t.
