Erik was supposed to be waiting for Calla until after this assignment; instead he went and got married to the woman in command of this operation! While Erik and Melina are divorced now, Calla is still hurt and Erik has changed. He’s always distant and angry with Calla. Defeated and overwhelmed Calla finds love in the most unexpected place – with Erik’s ex-wife.

This is a tangled trio that only gets more so when an accident happens and Erik’s protective side begins to show again. Calla begins to discover that things may not be what they seem to be and she starts to question who, if anyone, she can trust.

I really enjoyed the way Jessica Subject wrote this book. The scenes were hot and well-written. Calla comes across clearly as a hurt woman looking for love and the characters of Melina and Erik are very believable. The love triangle is unusual but through her writing and story development Subject makes it believable. She also does a good job with the development of the planet Airondelle. It is habitable by humans but poses unseen risks that make you aware of the fact you can’t let your guard down physically, mentally or emotionally because you never know what previously unknown factor is waiting for you around the bend.

While Never Gonna Let You Go is complete in and of itself, Subject leaves some tantalizing loose ends I would love to see developed in future books taking place on Airondelle. If you like hot, sexy erotic romances then this is a book for you.

Never Gonna Let You Go is about a woman named Calla. Calla and her crew have been sent to the planet Airondelle on a mission to prepare the planet for people from Earth. Their main rule: no sex with anyone unless you are married to that someone. This is easy for Calla since her team consists of the man who broke her heart and once loved, Erik and his ex-wife Melina who is also the team’s commander. Erik and Calla used to be the best of friends while on Earth, but after Erik’s brief marriage to Melina, he has been crude and distant. Melina then befriends Calla, she says Erik may be pissed, but that is now reason they can’t be friends. What seems like a simple friendship quickly becomes something more as Calla trusts Melina and her words despite the rule. But Calla soon finds out that not only is Melina hiding secrets, but the very company that sent them to Airondelle is not as respectful as they would like them to believe.

Now I love Jessica and her work. I have read everything she has done so far and love it all. Her stories are so beautiful and hard to put down. But I must admit, this was my favorite one. Being I am a sucker for a good conspiracy, I was foaming at the mouth with this story. It definitely took a turn I didn’t see coming. What at first looked like an evil slag getting between two people that have loved each other forever, quickly became a story about the very foundation that sent these people on a mission, ripping their lives apart. Not only is the planet Airondelle is trouble, but so is Earth and Planet Core is at the center of it all. Goodness, what an exciting plot. Just gives me chills thinking about it.

The characters were great. All of them face terrible torment that we discover later on in the story and makes the all more likeable because of their sacrifices. I felt so sorry for Calla. It seemed as though everyone used her and thrown her aside once they were done. We see that all that happened with Melina would have been it and it was very heartbreaking. Erik was such a jerk, but we learn why he was and you feel for him as well. His guilt was all he had to offer Calla really. Melina’s surprised me the most. I won’t reveal any of this because it is a bit of a spoiler, but you will understand it.

I really don’t want to spoil this for anyone, but trust me, this is a great short story that I know lots of people will enjoy. I can’t wait to see what is next in this series. Calla and Erik are hiding for their lives Underground (a place only rumored to exist) and they are planning something huge. I am desperate to find out what it is. For a short story, I got a little bit of all I could want. My only complaint is that I wish I got more of the worlds they were in, specifically what happened to Earth. But there is enough mystery here to keep me at the edge of my seat and like I said, I am very anxious for more. Check this out and thank you Jessica for once again gracing me with you awesomeness.(less)

Okay, I have to put this out there... I felt like this story opened like a soft porn flick. Girl lusts after ex. Ex is an ass. Girl's female supervisor (and also ex of same guy) pulls her aside. Girl thinks she is in trouble, but instead of punishment supervisor shows a soft side and desires flare. I wanted to cue the "bow-chicka-wa-wa" music. However, the story moves past the “porn” stage pretty quickly.

When Melina shows compassion and interest in Calla, Calla becomes confused for she’d never been attracted to a female before. Calla carries this confusion with her as she heads to the field to study native animal life. While Calla's confusion over her attraction is understandable, as is her need to analyze the situation, the constant inner monologue over these matters while she is working paints Calla in an immature light. She's a respected scientist but acting like a teenager. I found this mildly annoying.

Melina uses her supervisory position of power to put Calla in a compromising situation. Calla enjoys it, but it feels cliche. As things progress, Calla continues to question her attraction, stating “But I’m not a lesbian.” This leads into a short discussion about how sex between women doesn’t mean one is a lesbian. The discussion felt like a PSA for the general reading audience.

I continued to struggle with Calla’s reaction to the situation. Although Calla's feelings and uncertainty about being with a woman are natural, I felt at times it gave the book a "dirty" feel. Here is an example of what I mean: "She wanted the experience to be quick, didn't want to get caught with a woman. No one on the mission would respect her if they found out." Statements like these took away from the story and degraded the romance aspect for me.

Now with that all said, the story quickly takes an interesting twist of events. We find out that things are not as they appear. The reader (and Calla) is uncertain who to believe. Conspiracies abound, and suddenly Erik, who was a MAJOR ASS in the first part of the book, is the hero. Of course, if Eric had just been a man and come clean about what happened with Melina there never would have been a problem.

Once the team returns home, we find out more hidden truths, and one really begins to question what the heck is Planet Core up to. This was when I really became engrossed. Unfortunately, it was only a minor part of the story. I wonder if we will get more - another novella or a full-length book?

In then end, I really wanted to like this story a lot, for I'm a sci fi junkie at heart, and this novella held a lot of promise with it’s conspiracy theories and the underground resistance movement. But in the end the book fell flat for me. There were too many open questions and story lines for a novella-length story. Erik going from ass to sweetheart was a little too rapid, and I just didn't feel the justification for his horrendous behavior. Once back on earth, I felt the part of the story with the most promise was rushed. We never find out why Calla and Erik were set up or what the whole underground movement is about. With that said, the premise of the story is interesting enough that I certainly would like to read the next story. I feel there is a lot of potential, and although a lot seemed to bug me about the book, I enjoyed reading it.

I enjoyed this story. I liked the characters, not all at first, but by the end I liked them all.

The good: the worldbuilding was excellent. I liked all the little details of Airondelle and future Earth. I really hope there's a sequel to carry on the conflict hinted at. At first I liked Calla, but not Erik or Melina. As their "stories" played out I started to like them both more.

The sex scenes are explicit and sensual.

The bad: I can't thin...more
