I really loved this book. It was different to what I was expecting, but it grabbed me from the very start, and I was hooked the whole way through.

Alex is a great character. She is very relatable, and I felt an instant connection with her. We first meet her when she is walking home with her best friend from a big night out. She is attacked in the woods, and wakes up days later in a strange bed with a hot guy watching over her, and no idea how she got there.

Our hero, Nathan, explains to her that...more

From the first few sentences, I liked the character Alex! She was believable and realistic. We first meet Alex while she is doing the drunken walk home with her best friend Claire after her boyfriend Eddie has cheated on her once again. Now I know exactly what that’s like; I've been in her shoes before. The difference being, I didn't wake up as a Vârcolac (were-vamp hybrid) the next day!

If you've read the synopsis, then you know the storyline, so I’m going to skip giving you a summary and move...more

I hadn't read a vampire/Werewolf book since... Probably since I read Inheritance last year. Coming back to the genre with First Bitten was... Absolutely worth it.

It's about Alexandra (who likes to be called Alex), a young woman that after leaving her boyfriend and technically watching her best friend die in hands of a vampire/werewolf hybrid becomes said creature herself. She struggles to keep her humanity, while discovering she has feelings for her savior.

Hmmm... You have probably guessed I'm a...more

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't just the plot, characters and setting that drew me in, but I really fell in love with the emotional descriptions.

They were so well written, I could feel what the character was feeling. As a writer I struggle with those sort of descriptions, but these ones read and felt so effortless. I loved the narrative voice and it took off right away that the character and author must be British. And it read wonderfully and gave the characters alot of character. I could...more

Apart from the slight over use of the word "bloody" in the first chapter, I thought this one was pretty good =]. I kinda feel like the author was trying to cram in every profanity that she could think of in the first chapter, not that I'm a prude or anything (haa!), but it all just seemed a little OTT.
I liked the love/hate relationship between Alex and Nathan and I did like the ending, even though it was bittersweet (I'm sure we haven’t heard the last of them though). I feel the author held bac...more

I liked this book, not as much as A Mighty Storm, but that is a pretty hard act to follow. Then again they are two starkly different stories. This vamp/werewolf tale has a lot of heart and didn't fail to keep me on my toes, intrigued and waiting to see what the protagonists next move would be. Ms. Towle definitely didn't pull any punches either. I give her credit for this because there is a lot of death and it isn't always pretty or vindicating.....more

FIRST BITTEN looked to be a really promising read just going by the premise. It had all my favorite components. There was the female character having to overcome emotional obstacles in order to adapt to her new life. The brooding alpha male who has to protect her from the race, which wants to keep her enslaved since she is the only one of her sex. The hint that there may be some high action where both leads have to avoid the vill...more

I was not sure what to expect from this book but was pleasantly surprised. I loved the story and the characters. It kept me interested. Even the cliffhanger at the end was awesome. The author did a great job with this book and I cannot wait for the next one.

Have you noticed how when you're down, life bends you over and shoves its heel in your rear end just to make sure you're breathing in sand? Just when it can't get any worse, it does.

First Bitten takes you straight into the mire with Alex. Then the mystery starts. Memory gaps, strange men, and well - wow - did I laugh a lot being Alex's voyeur. A pure man of mystery saved Alex the night it all turned to carnage, but wasn't in time to save Carrie. Nothing cuts as deep as grief and guilt in one pot...more

This book is between 3-4 stars. It kept my attention because the premise behind it was interesting but I couldn't really connect with the two main characters Alexandra and Nathan. I don't recall finding out how old she is but she comes across as a weak, selfish person with a temper and closer to Sol's age than Nathan's. I don't really understand the attraction between Nathan and Alexandra as they don't seem to get along. Nathan...for someone who was drawn to saving others...he didn't seem to ha...more

Dear Samantha Towle, can I just tell you how much I love and adore you as a writer. You do not disappoint. You have a faithful reader in me for life. You give me the stories that have drama and heartache with the whole mystery of love. I know when I sit down and read one of your books, it will not be a waste of my time.

I was nervous when I first picked up First Bitten, but there was no disappointment. I love that the Hero, Nathan, is not perfect and that he has issues, but those issues had nothi...more

First, I want to give a special thanks to Samantha Towle for sending the digital copy of “First Bitten” for review.

I have to say when I received the book, I loved the gripping cover the book has, Alexandra, (Who I am assuming is on front of the cover) has that look in her eyes when you just have that want…that need! And I must say I sensed her want and need through the book! It starts off where Alexandra is out for a night on the town getting over a heartbreak with her best friend Carrie, unfor...more

I had to immediately try another of Samantha Towle's books after enjoying the last one so much. It didn't disappoint.
I liked this book a lot. I wouldn't say I loved it but it is still a great read. I really liked Alex but at times I felt like I wanted her to be a tad more....something. She spent the majority of the book feeling sorry for herself and clinging to Nate and his family even knowing she was putting them in danger. MaybeI'm just so used to strong, independent, kick @ss heroines in PNR...more

Oh my, how had I not heard of Samantha until recently? I absolutely, positively could not put this book down and when I finished it, I had to start book two Original Sin immediately. There is something I find completely addicting about Samantha's writing. I am not sure what it is exactly, but it pulls me in and will not let me go.

Here are a few of the many things I liked about this book:

*The lore. It had so many familiar elements that it seemed "true", yet had so many new elements that the stor...more

I felt like the story spent a bit too much time in the main character's head and that the story's development would have been aided and have more depth if more time was spent either in other characters' heads, or just less time listening to the main character's thoughts and inner dialogue. I spent much of the story hoping that Alex would take some initiative in her life and be a stronger female character. I know that not every character is perfect and devoid of flaws, but I was hoping to see mor...more

So this is my first review so please bare with me :) I have to say i started this book with the thought i wont like it . And boy was i ever wrong ! I liked the main Character Alex from the beginning. I mean who can blame her she is heart broken over the idiot she has been dating and i could relate to that . As soon they decided they would not catch a cab but walk i knew oh snap something is about to happen and i don't mean this in a bad way it made me want to read faster and find out . Once in t...more

My Thoughts:

To be honest, I requested a free copy from Samantha Towle on Facebook in exchange for an honest review because I LOVE free books, and based on the cover, I was expecting to read another Twilight-esque vampire novel. Boy, was I surprised!

Samantha creates a unique world of vampires, werewolves, and shape shifters that I hadn’t expected. Add the fact that the story is set in England, where Samantha lives, and you have a wonderfully fresh setting and voice on the paranormal romance sce...more

The cover, while semi interresting, doesnt fit the book considering she never bites a human.

Ok so Alex and her bff Carrie get attacked, Carrie dies and Alex turns into a vampire/werewolf hybird. Ok cool. She is saved and fostered by a family of shape shifters. They explain to her what she is and she decides she would rather wallow in self pitty and cry every 5 minutes. Okay hun I get your friend dies, and that you are having trouble adjusting, but really get over it. You know you could b...more

Poor. If you dropped out of the "Hollows" series by Kim Harrison like I did, for the same reasons I did, you'll want to miss this book.

Yes, I'm sure that someone attacked and almost killed is a fragile being. But I'm not reading a book like this to listen to whining, insecure, and leech-like behaviors. The main character has never done anything on her own (orphaned and taken in by a wealthy family, supported by said wealthy family's daughter, then taken in completely - for reasons very poorly ex...more

I quit this at 91%, it was not that bad in the beginning... the girl gets bit by a were-vamp hybrid and is the only female one, the shape shifter people save her and give her a place to live. So I'm expecting some interesting powers, something... NOTHING. She doesn't even shift into a wolf. She just goes all depressed (which was decently written) and the rest of the book is this emo romance romp with the hot guy. Near the end they end up liking each other (view spoiler)[ but then she is suddenly...more

First Bitten is an interesting story especially for the analysis and the psychological depth that the author devotes to the characters. We see Alex dealing with pain and confusion due to the disruption of everything that was his past life which can never return. And we see the inner struggle of Nathan, a war hero and protector (by nature) of the weak, between guarding the secret nature of Alex and preserve his family from danger. All this made more difficult by the changing feelings between th...more

MY REVIEW
I liked the cover and initially thought oh its going to be a vampire novel, Oh Wow! I knew it would be good as I read Samantha's other book The Bringer and I loved that one. This book was much much more than a vampire story. Alex is bitten by a Várcolac, which is a vampire-werewolf hybrid.....the thing is women don't usually survive.....well....Alex does! Which means that she is very valuable to the Varcolac who obviously wish to reproduce! Alex was "Lucky" to be rescued by the gorgeous...more

If you have read Samantha Towle's excellent The Bringer, and if you haven't, you should, you should, you will know that she combines a moving love story with another genre - in that case 'fantasy'.

This time around, the other genre is 'vampire / werewolf' but this is primarily going to appeal to Romance readers who like an exciting adventure ending, and as the reviewer Poppet has mentioned here, an absolutely stunning last chapter.

Poor lass, Alex gets bitten, and grows fangs and has to do a few u...more

If you would have asked me a few days ago if this was a good book to read I would have said yes, but after reading book 2 I have changed my mind. I was so interested in this book because I have never read a shifter story with a supernatural creature that is both a werewolf and a vampire, a Varcolac. It started good with some action and a background story but then the book slowed way down. Most of the story is set in the main character, Alex, head as she is doing day to day stuff while gets use t...more

This book is about a girl who becomes a hybrid vampire/werewolf with super human strength, that she never uses, ability to shift to a wolf, but never does, and falls in love with a brooding x-military shifter with anger issues. A paranormal romance with very little paranormal activity. It was also a cliffhanger. And it didn't matter - I loved it. ST can just tell a great story. Her characters are so multi-faceted and flawed and so very real, even if the situation isn't. The dialogue exchanges be...more
