I really loved this book. It was different to what I was expecting, but it grabbed me from the very start, and I was hooked the whole way through.

Alex is a great character. She is very relatable, and I felt an instant connection with her. We first meet her when she is walking home with her best friend from a big night out. She is attacked in the woods, and wakes up days later in a strange bed with a hot guy watching over her, and no idea how she got there.

From the first few sentences, I liked the character Alex! She was believable and realistic. We first meet Alex while she is doing the drunken walk home with her best friend Claire after her boyfriend Eddie has cheated on her once again. Now I know exactly what that’s like; I've been in her shoes before. The difference being, I didn't wake up as a Vârcolac (were-vamp hybrid) the next day!

If you've read the synopsis, then you know the storyline, so I’m going to skip giving you a summary and move to giving you my thoughts.

Alexandra Jones has a lot of inner strength, and it’s a lucky thing that she does as she is going to need every bit of it. From the moment she wakes up in Nathan's house it’s seems like she has one emotional turmoil after the other to deal with. Alex finds out that she is now a Vârcolac and can never return to the life she once lead, her best-friend and pretty much a sister Claire was killed during the attack, the original Vârcolacs are after her as she is the only female Vârcolac in existence and she has to put up with Nathan’s at times surly attitude and mixed signals.

I found myself wanting to know more of Nathan's thought and feelings and I wasn’t disappointed as nearing the end we have a whole chapter just from Nathan's perspective. Throughout the book, you see that Nathan is a very closed off and at times comes off as cold and uncaring. At one moment, I liked him and in the next sentence he really got on my nerves and it seemed like he made Alex feel the same way!

Towle has done an extremely good job with making the side characters just as interesting and enjoyable as Alex and Nathan. I loved Nathan’s younger brother Sol and his easy-going nature and their father Jack, who could only be described as calm, caring and perceptible.

Overall, this was a great paranormal read, which had me shocked and gasping quite a few times throughout the book. There were a few things that niggled me about the book, but that was more about Nathan’s attitude at times and nothing to do with the storyline or writing. The ending leaves no doubt that there will be a second book coming soon and I personally cannot wait! (less)

I hadn't read a vampire/Werewolf book since... Probably since I read Inheritance last year. Coming back to the genre with First Bitten was... Absolutely worth it.

It's about Alexandra (who likes to be called Alex), a young woman that after leaving her boyfriend and technically watching her best friend die in hands of a vampire/werewolf hybrid becomes said creature herself. She struggles to keep her humanity, while discovering she has feelings for her savior.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't just the plot, characters and setting that drew me in, but I really fell in love with the emotional descriptions.

They were so well written, I could feel what the character was feeling. As a writer I struggle with those sort of descriptions, but these ones read and felt so effortless. I loved the narrative voice and it took off right away that the character and author must be British. And it read wonderfully and gave the characters alot of character. I could...more

Apart from the slight over use of the word "bloody" in the first chapter, I thought this one was pretty good =]. I kinda feel like the author was trying to cram in every profanity that she could think of in the first chapter, not that I'm a prude or anything (haa!), but it all just seemed a little OTT.

I liked this book, not as much as A Mighty Storm, but that is a pretty hard act to follow. Then again they are two starkly different stories. This vamp/werewolf tale has a lot of heart and didn't fail to keep me on my toes, intrigued and waiting to see what the protagonists next move would be. Ms. Towle definitely didn't pull any punches either. I give her credit for this because there is a lot of death and it isn't always pretty or vindicating.....more

Have you noticed how when you're down, life bends you over and shoves its heel in your rear end just to make sure you're breathing in sand? Just when it can't get any worse, it does.

First Bitten takes you straight into the mire with Alex. Then the mystery starts. Memory gaps, strange men, and well - wow - did I laugh a lot being Alex's voyeur. This book is between 3-4 stars. It kept my attention because the premise behind it was interesting but I couldn't really connect with the two main characters Alexandra and Nathan. I don't recall finding out how old she is but she comes across as a weak, selfish person with a temper and closer to Sol's age than Nathan's. I was nervous when I first picked up First Bitten, but there was no disappointment. I love that the Hero, Nathan, is not perfect and that he has issues, but those issues had nothing to do with a bad sexual history. His attitude brought life to the story and made me question what his motives were for all the things he did for Alex. I mean, he was jerk even towards the end. Chapter 26 and 27 were awesome. Wow, how could we love Nathan and yet read how he makes Alex feel in those chapters??!!!

"No, Be nice to me, Nathan!" he mimics, gesticulating angrily. " Like me, Nathan! Take care of me! Save me from the bastards that killed..." - Nathan.
Those words from Nathan to Alex put a knife in my heart.

And

"Well you don't have any money and it's not like you can go to anyone you know - family, friends, your ex-boyfriend. You're supposed to be dead, remember? But then it's not like you have any family left to go to, is it?" - Nathan. His harsh words to Alex.
Okay, as I am rereading and writing those words for my review, I am in tears. Nathan, Nathan, Nathan...

I was listening to The Killers' "Read My Mind" thinking about Nathan and Alex. I absolutely love that song!

The only bad thing about this book was the cover. That is what made me hesitate to read it. it does not portray the story.

My questions:
- Did I skim through the book? NO
- Did I think about the book when I had to stop reading? Yes. Those damn obligations that had me stop reading in the middle of the book. Did my husband and children really need food on the table??!! :)
- Did I count the minutes until I was able to return to reading the book? YES, I was making every excuse possible as to why I had to go back to my Kindle.
- Will/would I reread this book? Yes
- Did I think about the book after I was finished? Yes and have been thinking about it since I finished 2 days ago.

And I must say I sensed her want and need through the book! It starts off where Alexandra is out for a night on the town getting over a heartbreak with her best friend Carrie, unfortunately their night doesn’t end as planned, and after 2 days Alexandra wakes up, in a strangers home only to discover that her life has changed forever, she is no longer human but a hybrid. She meets Nathan and his family, who took responsibility for caring for her while she passed out. With Nathan and his family’s help she learns to cope with everything that has happened, and learns that Nathan and his family aren’t exactly human either, but you automatically can sense the tension flowing between Nathan and Alexandra from the moment they meet.

Talk about the tension in this book, there was so much tension I thought I was about to go insane, I wanted to just take these two characters, lock them in a room until they got passed what it was that was keeping them from making a move! You could easily tell that they are attracted to each other but their actions, like constantly arguing with one another, tells a different story. However, I will say that towards the end you will be happy to know the tension is relieved.

I did feel that though the beginning got my attention right away, the following chapters were not grasping me as strongly but still were able to keep my attention quite nicely, it did pick right back up towards the end though.

Now to talk about the chapters towards the end of the book…it had my mouth hanging open. So much happens that you just want to know, “What happens next”, “Will everything work out okay” , “WHY!” and to top it off the ending has a cliffhanger that has you saying, “That’s it?!?!”

It definitely leaves you wanting to read the next book. Her next installment in the series - Original Sin is to be released later on this year. Overall I give this book 4/5 bats.

I had to immediately try another of Samantha Towle's books after enjoying the last one so much. It didn't disappoint.
I liked this book a lot. I wouldn't say I loved it but it is still a great read. I really liked Alex but at times I felt like I wanted her to be a tad more....something. She spent the majority of the book feeling sorry for herself and clinging to Nate and his family even knowing she was putting them in danger. Nathan has to tell her its been days since the attack and explain she is now a Vorcolac(which is part vampire part werewolf). He also has to tell me Carrie was killed and now I'm all alone with people I don't know and dont understand what I have become.

Nathan is a strong charachter. One minute you love him the next you hate him much like Alex does in the book. He runs hot and cold towards her and can't seem to make up his mind how to treat her, but yet he has made it clear this is her new home. Here with him, his brother Sol and his dad Jack. They are just side characthers but pull you into Nathan's world of how much he loves his family and how much of an honorable man he is, but then he treats Alex like shit and you want to kill him.

Alex is so full of turmoil she can't get over the loss of Carrie and blames herself and Nathan tells her to suck it up and move on. Her world is upside down she has to drink blood like a vampire and finds out she can shift whenever she wants into a werewolf. Sol tries to talk to her and get her out of her room and Nathan just ignores her which just pisses her off. She didn't ask him to save her and she sure as hell didn't ask to live here. Sol finally gets her to help with chores on the farm.

Her and Nathan are getting along a little better after she helps him deliver Honors foul that he tells her to name when its over. Honor and the foul would have died if Alex didn't help him and after that night their relationship changed or did it.... Like I said he runs hot and cold throught the entire book. I couldn't put it down. I was constantly wanting more of their love hate relationship and it went on through the entire book. Of course Alex falls in love with him and when Cal betrays them and hands Alex over to the Vorcolacs to clear his gambling debt shit hits the fan. Nathan abouts kills Cal for his part in them taking Alex and he has to get her back. When they find where she is and go in it all went great till time to leave. As she is kissing Nathan to go wait outside with Sol she realizes the feelings he had for her and wants to try and explain things with him. As they leave to go find Jack, Sol is attack and killed.

This tears Nathan down and he blames it all on Alex even though in my eyes he should blame Cal. Its his fault they took Alex and none of them would have been there if it wasn't for him. After the funeral Nathan still isn't talking to Alex but demands they leave they must go on the run to try and keep her safe. Alex fills that she can't take it any more because he is drinking and so mean her she feels like she is ruining his life. When he says he got her a pass ports and they are leaving for France she decides she's going on her on. Nathan stops her says he can't live without he that he loves her and they finally make love. She sneaks off while he is sleeping.....

This is a must read!!

REVIEW: The summary caught my attention, but I can't say the same for the book. I didn't know why i stopped, but i did. The writing was ok, a bit childish but ok. In the beginning i felt the word "bloody" was used too often, and i just didn't like how the story was played out. I also got bored, and felt that the book didn't catch my interest at all...not even once!

Alex gets attacked after being out with her friend Carrie. Nathan swoops in and saves Alex and takes her back to his home, where she someone made it through the transition(which she wasn't suppose to, only males are suppose to survive it)....so now she's the one and only Varcolac(which is rare!).
And Carrie...the girl whom her family took Alex in and loved, Carrie whom has always been there for Alex... is dead.
There is Jack(the dad), Nathan, ans Sol(the flirty young bro).

Well Nathan acts distant around Alex, and Alex gets the thought that he doesnt like her. Oh my, how had I not heard of Samantha until recently? I absolutely, positively could not put this book down and when I finished it, I had to start book two Original Sin immediately. There is something I find completely addicting about Samantha's writing. I am not sure what it is exactly, but it pulls me in and will not let me go.

I felt like the story spent a bit too much time in the main character's head and that the story's development would have been aided and have more depth if more time was spent either in other characters' heads, or just less time listening to the main character's thoughts and inner dialogue. I spent much of the story hoping that Alex would take some initiative in her life and be a stronger female character. Alex is leaving an unhealthy relationship with Eddie after 3 years. She’s out on the town one night with her best friend Carrie when she gets another call from Eddie and decides in her drunken state to toss the phone in the woods. Realizing she needs her phone, they go on a search for it. While in the woods her friend and she are attacked. Nathan hears the screams and is only able to save Alex. Her life is about to change but not for her benefit as she sees it. He takes her to his home where his father, Jack and brother, Sol and himself nurse her back to health. He has a secret as well. He’s trying to teach her what she has inherited from the bite she has received. But there are others that will be out looking for her as she is the only female Varcolac that has ever survived and would be able to carry on the lineage. She’ll have to stay in hiding to keep everyone safe around her .Can Alex ever find love or is she destined to solitude forever? What will become of her? What is in store for Nathan? Will he be able to love someone and have a happy life where he isn’t always saving someone but himself? I’d be interested to see where this story goes.

You know you could be attacked and taken somewhere and raped repeatedly and yet you dont lift a finger to try to see what kind of super human strength you have? You are not even a little curious? You dont even want to learn to help defend those you are supposed to care about? The biggest thing this girl does with her new found strength is break a glass, on accident.

Books need a balance of dialogue, and written thoughts and descriptions. While this book had more dialogue then some books I have read, it did not have a balance and I found myself bored reading her gloomy, woe is me thoughts constantly. This girl makes the EMO generation look like a fucking pollyanna.

Anyway, we have some betrayal, Alex gets taken, and Nathan sets off to find her. Okay *rubs hands together* now we are gonna get some action.
WRONG
Eh some gunshots, a valiant rescue, and boom its over.
Well 1 person did die, and that was sad, but well that is just another good reason for Alex to mope, and cry, and be all angsty again. *sigh*

I had hoped for some kind of good ending since I was trudging along trying to finish the book, but nope, pretty crappy ending. One of those endings that make you want to throw your Kindle across the room.

Do I recommend this book? Sure, if you tend to relish angsty, mopey, depressing stories with no action whatsoever.
Will I read it again? Uh NO
Will I read next in series? Probably not, but Maybe. I did give this book 2 stars, so I am a little interrested in what will happen to the characters, just not a lot.(less)

Poor. If you dropped out of the "Hollows" series by Kim Harrison like I did, for the same reasons I did, you'll want to miss this book.

Yes, I'm sure that someone attacked and almost killed is a fragile being. But I'm not reading a book like this to listen to whining, insecure, and leech-like behaviors. I quit this at 91%, it was not that bad in the beginning... the girl gets bit by a were-vamp hybrid and is the only female one, the shape shifter people save her and give her a place to live. So I'm expecting some interesting powers, something... NOTHING. She doesn't even shift into a wolf. She just goes all depressed (which was decently written) and the rest of the book is this emo romance romp with the hot guy. Near the end they end up liking each other (view spoiler)...more

First Bitten is an interesting story especially for the analysis and the psychological depth that the author devotes to the characters. We see Alex dealing with pain and confusion due to the disruption of everything that was his past life which can never return. I liked the cover and initially thought oh its going to be a vampire novel, Oh Wow! I knew it would be good as I read Samantha's other book The Bringer and I loved that one. This book was much much more than a vampire story. Alex is bitten by a Várcolac, which is a vampire-werewolf hybrid.....the thing is women don't usually survive.....well....Alex does! Nathan, his father Jack and younger brother Sol *swoons more for Sol* nurse her back to health and offer her protection.
Alex has lots of things to over come such as the fact her best friend/more like a sister Carrie was killed by the Várcolac , Alex also has to come to terms with the fact she can never return to her family or friends again, as she would put them in danger with the Várcolacs. alex also has to learn to accept certain traits and "talents" she now has such as she has to drink blood......sure its animal blood that the gorgeous Nathan brings her regularly but its still blood! Alex also has improved hearing, sight and strength too. Alex also finds her self attracted to Nathan, even though he seems to resent her presence and at times hate her too, even though he is the one that saved her. Alex also knows that there is something different about Jack, Nathan, and Sol, it turns out that they are shifters.
I really don't want to go into the plot and spoil the book for anyone but I will say that Alex ends up being sold out to the enemy which causes another great loss of life to happen just when she is beginning to believe that she can cope and live with what life has thrown at her.
I picked my kindle up with this book on and put it down for 10 minutes to eat tea, then went to bed later still reading it, I truthfully did not, could not put it down. This book made me gasp in shock, sit on the end of my seat with suspense, tears well up and my heart ache for certain characters and what happens to them. The book is wonderfully written you can imagine the scenery as well as the gorgeous shape-shifter family too *phwoar*
I felt these books were easily, easily on a par if not better than the Women of The Otherworld Series by Kelley Armstrong, The Shifter Series by Rachel Vincent, and The Resurrection Series by Dee Tenorio too.
So did I enjoy it? Yes Would I read more in the series? Oh Yes! can't wait!! Would I recommend them? Definitely. Must, Must read!(less)

If you have read Samantha Towle's excellent The Bringer, and if you haven't, you should, you should, you will know that she combines a moving love story with another genre - in that case 'fantasy'.

This time around, the other genre is 'vampire / werewolf' but this is primarily going to appeal to Romance readers who like an exciting adventure ending, and as the reviewer Poppet has mentioned here, an absolutely stunning last chapter.
