Did you ever read a book where fundamentally in the back of your head you think, 'why do I like this?' or 'I should not like this, but I just cannot help myself.' That is how I felt with Shattered Glass. I had a blast reading this. I laughed out loud more than I care to admit. It was over the top, completely off the wall, and well, endearing in an odd way.

I wanted to wait to write this review, then I realized I couldn't. I'm impressed and I've been impressed all the while reading this book.
The narrator, Austin, is frustrating, and you have to dig dig dig to get something deeper about him and you don't really get there. You have to have the patience of a saint to endure his snark and his mania. In his words:
"I was not insecure. I was a perfectly normal combination of arrogant and narcissistic."
How can you stand reading 122+k-words in his point of...more

Great story, incredible characters, LOTS of action. Too much plot, in fact. I would have liked a little less rush and drama all the way into the ending. But that's just a minor complaint. I am in awe of how thoroughly the characters are drawn, not only Austin and Peter, but the whole cast of secondary characters feel like real people. Why has it taken me until now to read this book - because I'm like a kid in a sweet shop that's why, too many books (and not all of them good it has to be said), too much choice and not enough hours in the day to read them all!!!
Austin's character was a gem. His smart-alec replies
had me in stitches, even while life as he knew it was going down the toilet! Peter was obviously a very complex character in view of his past as was Darryl

Austin is still my favourite character; now I've had time to have another look at Peter, I did empathise with him a lot more....he's had an awful lot happen to him in his 20 years, and hasn't really had a childhood, so exceptions can be made in his case; Cai, well, Cai is still a baby even though he's murdered someone, and his disorder means that he should be treated very gently and carefully...as Peter and Darryl have been trying to do...and with lots of love; Darryl, well, he's out and proud, and doesn't care who knows it, and in a way an even more extreme version of Austin, snarky, argumentative, sarcastic and loyal to a fault.
This book has me at a loss, because if this book can only have five stars, then I need to reevaluate every other book I've given five stars to. This book was just BRILLIANT.

Maybe Peter was the answer. The problem and the answer. The answer without being a solution. Another tick in the inconsistent life of Austin Glass.
About a year ago, my friends LA and Tina started raving about a book that was just released. It was by a new author and it was self published. It was different, fun, engaging, well written, humorous—you name the complimentary adjectives, I heard them all.

Admittedly, I was concerned whether the MC, Austin Glass, was ever going to mature. I found him funny, quick-witted, shallow and hurting. Even though he had it all, he wasn't nearly complete. Just finished my second read through and I have to say I enjoyed it more the second time around. Probably because I was able to catch things I missed when I was speed reading the first time because it's so. damn. good.

Awesome book by an awesome new (as far as I know) author. I didn't even make it until the end of the sample before I hit the 'Buy' button. And you need to buy this quick, because if Mr Alexander takes my advice he'll double the price of this book. It's one of those 'I can't believe how much more money I've spent on much crappier books' things.
