If I had any sort of liquor in my house other than a crazy huge bottle of toasted marshmallow vodka, I'd probably crack it open and pour out a glass so I could toast Brigid Kemmerer. I'm extremely happy to have found a promising start to a pnr series. It's been a while. I decided to take a chance and read this free prequel first before starting book 1, just so I wouldn't have to commit to a longer book in order to decide how I felt about the series. If you want to do the same thing I did, go check out one of the many major booksellers and chances are, this digital freebie will be up there. At only 49 ebook pages, it's not much of a gamble. *edit* This isn't a freebie anymore but it's only like 99 cents or something ridiculously low.

What impressed me the most were the intense emotions of the characters and how these emotions came across without feeling like I was choking to death on sappiness. Yes, the love vibe is definitely going to be on the heavy side here but I do enjoy romance if it's written in an enjoyable manner, even if I usually tend to prefer UF over PNR. There's something about this author's style that reminds me of Armentrout but at least with this author I'm left with none of the same guilt I feel after reading Armentrout.

The best part so far? The banter! I'm not sure why but there's something I feel while reading about couples who form a relationship through arguing that just does it for me. It's like this strange precursor of sexual tension which I can't explain. Yes, it is quite delicious.

She stopped before he could notice her. A red tee shirt clung to his shoulders, reminding her of those matadors who swung a red cape to taunt a bull to fight to the death.

Then there comes the reward when enemies turn into something else...

It was the please that got him. He couldn't remember the last time any of them had said please about anything.

Oh yeah, there was also a bit of action and some cool new powers and stuff (again with the technical terms). I can't wait to see where this series goes. Onward to Storm!

And I thought I couldn't be more excited to read Storm but I WAS WRONG. I'm already in love with Michael from reading this short (wish-it-was-so-much-longer) novella, so I can't imagine how hard I'm going to fall for these Merrick boys in a full-sized book! :)

Emily is the daughter of those people, but doesn't quite harbour their psychotic tendencies (alright, so maybe I'm a little biased toward her family). She's an amazing mix of sweet and caring girl-next-door, with a bit of a fierce streak. I wouldn't recommend getting on her bad side when there's a golf-putter within arms reach.

My heart really aches for Michael. Especially during a moment where he's genuinely happy, because so help me, I feel overjoyed that he's finally latched onto a bright spark in life. He's been on the receiving end of so much undeserved crap and yet he still remains so good at heart. He cares deeply about his family and he's just a decent person. So in life's typically cruel fashion, the girl who might be the one to offer a ray of sunlight just happens to be the sister of the biggest asshole in the country. It needs to be noted, very loudly, very boldly, how much I hate Tyler and his douche friend, Seth. My anger toward them raged a storm in.. well, Storm, and grew into something much more physical (okay, so trying to stab an ebook will have disastrous effects on your computer screen) in Elemental. They are jerks, end of story.

What I especially love about Elemental (and also Storm) is that it doesn't feel like your typical YA paranormal romance. The attraction is subtle, not always obviously, but hints at something that has the potential to be deep and earth-shattering. Something beautiful. Dangerous? Of course. But what's beauty without a little risk? The uncertainty of what they're feeling wars with the prejudices they've been fed while growing up. You're waiting on tenterhooks to see how things progress, for that blossoming attraction to break free. Every encounter between them feels so charged, and with every bitter, resentful word spoken, you can see the massive wall between them slowly crumble away, taking the anger and distrust along with it.

As she demonstrated in Storm, Brigid has once again channelled Geppetto and turned her fictional characters into real boys (and girls). Because they never feel flat or 2D, but fully fleshed, living souls, buzzing with a thousand different emotions that you feel right alongside them. You understand the motivation behind their every action and desire, what drives them forward, what makes them tick. You can't help but grow an emotional attachment to Michael and Emily, to believe in them, cheer for them and above all, hope for them.

Seeing as I've read Storm already, I know what the future holds for these two. I won't comment on that because it's ridiculously spoilery, but when you consider what happens after the ebook ends, oh my heart. It's experiencing a lot of activity. What kind of activity... well, I guess you'll have to read Storm to find out ;) We only catch a small glimpse of the other Merricks here, but I love that the twins, Gabriel and Nick, are just as naughty when they're 12 and Chris is so eager and lonely and you just want to envelope him in a massive bear hug. And have I mentioned that I freaking love these brothers?

Elemental is yet another reason why Brigid Kemmerer is a rising star in YA. She has phenomenal talent. That woman is going places. High places. I cannot recommend enough that you run over to Amazon , Barnes and Noble or Google Books and download this for just 99 CENTS! And then walk, don't run (who am I kidding, SPRINT) to preorder a copy of Storm . Heck, throw Spark , the sequel, in your cart while you're there, Gabriel will be immensely happy.(less)

Well this one won’t be very long as the story is not a long one. But its what starts everything off. This is the story of Michael and how he became the tough jerk that he is. But mainly its all about how he wasn’t that way once but events changed him forever.

My only complaint about Elemental is that it's too short. I know it's a short story, but just as it seemed like it was building up steam and it was getting really good -- BAM! It was over. It did its job well - it got me interested in the series. I was very glad to have Storm on hand because I started it almost immediately.

I don't think you can tell that much from a prequel. This one read fast and gave you the sneak peek it was meant to give. I didn't like Michael. Maybe that is because this was such a short story he came across to me as moody and unlikeable. I do like the elemental concept. I read a historical romance series by Karen Hawkins called the MacLean Curse and it also included a family who manipulated the elements and I enjoyed it a lot.

I don't have the best track records with novellas, so imagine my surprise when I not only enjoyed Elemental, BUT found it peaked my interest in picking up the rest of the series!

So much of what's touched on in Elemental - the small group of people who have extraordinary control over an element and are disliked enough for it that people want them dead, the guild in charge of regulating those with powers, the fear behind becoming a rogue elemental, a shady deal that's supposed to guarantee Michael...more I don't have the best track records with novellas, so imagine my surprise when I not only enjoyed Elemental, BUT found it peaked my interest in picking up the rest of the series!

So much of what's touched on in Elemental - the small group of people who have extraordinary control over an element and are disliked enough for it that people want them dead, the guild in charge of regulating those with powers, the fear behind becoming a rogue elemental, a shady deal that's supposed to guarantee Michael's safety in town - are all things I am eager to learn more about! It's also the reason Elemental is losing a star; while I can appreciate that Elemental is a novella and won't be providing all the answers, a little morsel to sate my hunger would have been appreciated!

I really enjoyed reading from both Michael and Emily's PoVs, as it gave some insight into how they were both feeling about the other. That being said, I did find their leap from outright antagonism, to shaky friendship, to romance happened a little quickly - even for novella standards. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy their moments together though!

Her cheeks were faintly pink, her breathing rapid. The blond hair and fair complexion made her brother look like a freak, but it suited her. He'd say she looked like a china doll, but then she'd swung a putter at his head on Wednesday. A contradiction in terms: strong and fragile, all at the same time. Like she might cry, but she'd slug him first.

They shared a similar humour, and I found myself grinning more often than not.

She'd never stood this close to him before, to where she could see the flecks of gold in his brown eyes, could count each individual strand of hair that the sun had lightened. He still smelled like summer, cut grass and sunscreen with a hint of something woodsy.

The chain-link fence between them somehow made this more intimate instead of less.

Don't be stupid. Even serial killers can be hot.

I was surprised by how quick to anger Michael was, but quickly realized that he was constantly having to defend the most innocent of actions - like visiting the batting cages - because someone was always looking to force him into using his powers - which is a big reason I NEED to continue with this series. Why does this town care so much about people with stronger powers? Why are there so few people who are born stronger than most? What happened in the past to make them so ostracized? Elemental hinted at so many secrets to unfold, I'm tempted to throw my reading schedule out the window and pick up Storm immediately!(less)

First of all, the covers are so so very awful. I'm glad I'm reading these as ebooks so i don't have to look at a cover every time I take a break. Michael always looks constipated.

I usually have a problem with novellas because in many of them the focus is just off, and Elemental falls right into that category. The ending was okay and made for some closure - unless you've read Storm first, then it's utter and complete frustration - but the rest of it felt...more

I have been hearing such wonderful things about this series that I took the opportunity to grab up this short prequel when it was offered for free. It took me a while to get around to reading it, but now that I did, I'm hooked.

There is not much of an explanation in this one about the world of the Elementals and it just jumps right into a short story piece that from what I understand gives background to Michael and explanation for what is to come in the rest of the series.

Michael’s novella really set the tone for the rest of the books. It was fast paced, action-packed, and emotional. I really loved getting this inside glance into what life was like for Michael before his little brothers became teenagers and had to deal with their own share of the effects of being Elementals.

Michael really felt the brunt of it. It’s also why he is the way he is, really. He was the oldest of four boys and a very strong elemental. He was being tested at every turn by the bad guy elementals who thought he should be killed and along with all of that he had to deal with this growing power inside of him. He was also a great big brother. He looked out for Chris, especially.

And finally, just when it seems like he’s finally met someone who can just like him for him and not be afraid of him, something goes wrong. That was a really mean cliffhanger there, Brigid. Well played.

I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this short story for Michael. I felt for him, how alone and misunderstood he was, how much pressure he was under, and how much he wished for a drama free life.

Kemmerer really dreamt up such a great and dynamic set of characters that we can all enjoy and root and feel for. A big Kudos to Kemmerer for giving readers a series that they won’t regret spending their money on.

I like that the story manages to showcase the differences between Michael and Emily's family lives in such a short period of time. He loves his family and they want the best for him, trying to protect him at every turn. Her family is more distant and cold, stiffling in their protectiveness. I appreciated that Emily, as much as she was desperate to escape her life, had never realized until meeting Michael just how sheltered and inclusive she really was. Emily thought she was so different, but had instinctively believed eveything her parents and brother Tyler told her. When Michael and Emily truly begin to interact it turns intense pretty fast. I love the initial standoff with Em wielding the golf club. It made me crack up. My main complaint is that Brigid got my heart racing and my mind going crazy, only to end on a cliffhanger! Then book # 1 picked up years later, with a different brother as the focal point! What the h-e-double hockeysticks HAPPENED??? Now I have to read all of them just to find out! I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance with some snarky attitude and awesome characters - but do yourself a favor, and have the next one on hand to read immediately afterwards!

After a misunderstanding involving her golf club and his head… the two come to a somewhat uncomfortable compromise. He can get his batting practice and she won’t tell her family that she’s associating with one of the Merricks. Emily’s brother Tyler would like nothing more than Michael and people like him dead.

Whilst the Morgans have weak ties to certain elements, the Merricks are can control the Earth, Fire, Air and Water and because of this many in society consider them to be dangerous. And dangerous things need to be destroyed.

This story is one that I wish I’d read before I read Storm. This novella explains why Michael is so bitter towards the world and why he considers anyone except for family as the enemy.

The brothers interactions with each other are one of my favourite things about this series. The boys are typical teenage boys despite the supernatural abilities they have to control the elements. Fighting in the hallways and other sibling stuff that may seem mundane to some just added a sense of realism to the story for me.

I also loved the banter between Emily and Michael. The way they talk and the descriptions of each other are the stuff that make me anticipate Michael’s story – if he gets one.

It was surprising to me just how sad I found it and how attached I got to Michael and Emily’s story over such few pages. There’s a bit of a mystery at the end and I think it’s a great read for anyone who wants a little more back story to the Elemental series.

This is a short insight for how it all started..

it's about Michael.. and it made me ache for him =(

As if life isn't hard enough for a boy his age.. He's carrying the burden of being pure elemental (people who don't know better will rejoice something like this) but not him.. he knows better.. knows much better..

He's torn between sticking to his family and between the guilt he feels for endangering all of them (little does he know.. they'll all end up the same)

I have had this novella sitting on my Kindle for over a month now. It looked really interesting just by the cover(green is my favorite color ;)) but I just never got around to reading it.
Last night, I was skimming through my Kindle and found this story and just started reading. Oh my goodness I was completely hooked! The writing is fantastic and Kemmerer keeps you in the dark, only revealing a little bit at a time about the characters.

Well, this one was very short. To the point I was in no way ready for it to end. I just wanted it to keep going, to see what happened to Emily & Michael, because dayam is the reader left hanging at the end.
If this novella (or short, I guess) is a ploy to get readers to need to read on in the series, then congratulations, because the author has succeeded. This is definitely a great introduction to some of the character's in Kemmerer's Elemental world. I liked the two main character's a LOT. T...more

First, let me say I was a bit disappointed, when I got this book and realized it was only 49 pages long. I looked it up on here to see if this was part of a series or not, and behold it is!

So I figured I would give it a chance, and my oh my I was amazed on how quickly I fell into reading it. I feel in love with Michael from the beginning. I’d love to start off by discussing the cover. These covers are so eye catching, with the good looking guys and the bright colors…however, the guy looks way too old to be Michael Merrick. Like at least ten years too old, probably closer to fifteen. That bothers me. I don’t know why but it really does. This, however, has nothing to do with my rating of the book. So please don’t think it has effected the outcome. It’s just me voicing my opinion on that matter…
