Demons of the Sun is a great new paranormal novel, with hints of mythology and plenty of humour. Persephone, the feisty main character, narrates a dark tale with wit and emotion as she finds her role as the sole protector of Hades’ Dagger colliding with Jax’s role as a Warrior for the Order of Zeus. Jax is an explosion of cockiness and protectiveness and Persephone is a girl who would much rather take care of herself. Together, the two make an unlikely but chemistry-charged pair, and with them, Cindi Madsen crafts together a wholly entertaining novel full of action and romance.

Amusing is one way to describe this book. While much of it is as gritty and dark as would be expected, Madsen has a very distinct witty style. The dialogue between her characters is sharp, full of banter and written in such a way that, despite the flaws in this book, it’s impossible not to enjoy it. Yes, it is heavily focused on the romance (and if that’s not something you like, tread carefully), so there is no shortage of jesting and light-hearted flirting. Personally, Jax is what made this book for me. His kindness, unwavering loyalty (or irritating company, as Persephone might say) and playful arrogance won me over almost instantly. Persephone was just as likable, even if a little typical at times, and her no-nonsense attitude gives Jax a lot to work for.

While I consider Demons of the Sun to be more of a character-driven novel, there is a substantial enough plot line. Admittedly, predictability is an issue here – the whole Adrastos thing was painfully obvious – but despite it, the story remains mostly engaging throughout. Demon-slaying, gothic visions and unexplained murders create a dark and sinister tone that lingers over the lighter scenes. It all reaches a satisfying peak towards the end, giving us an exciting climax and the final bout of action. What bothered me, however, was that some aspects were never fully addressed. The Order of Zeus had a flimsy presence at best and unconvincing significance during the story. As much as I enjoyed the focus on Jax and Persephone, I would have ideally liked a broader story, where the Order and a wider range of characters played a more noticeable role.

There are a few technical areas that could have been better handled, such as the transitions between the visions, the pacing during the first half, and some grammatical matters, but these aspects did not greatly hinder my overall enjoyment of the book. In fact, many of these flaws can be ignored easily enough, and if you enter this book expecting the right things, it’s certain to be pleasing regardless. Anyone who enjoys fierce main characters, humorous dialogue and a romance-heavy story will thoroughly enjoy Demons of the Sun. I reckon Jennifer L. Armentrout fans in particular will be the perfect match for this book. If you fall into that category, definitely pick this up.

A masterpiece of violence and romance.

I really enjoyed this book. The story is deep and the characters are as real as they come. Also, the main character Persephone is a butt-kicking hottie!

I hadn't known much about this book before I started reading, just that it involved greek mythology, a girl called Persophone and of course, demons.

The first page of the book dived into action and within the first 100 or so words, I was hooked. To me that is one sign of a good book, being able to grab your readers within the first couple of lines. The pace of the book did not abate, whether throwing you into edge-of-your-seat action or capturing you in the hot romances and underlying tensions.

The main character is Persephone, the last Sentry of the Order of Zeus. Persephone is head-strong, smart and uses a good dose of sarcasm in her words. She’s lost her whole family yet she manages to soldier on, which is rather amazing. She’s not quite as tough as she seems, but after all she’s been through that’s no surprise. I love her! She is brilliant.

Jax is Persephone’s knight in shining armour, though he has to force his way into her life at first. He is funny, smart and drop-dead sexy! The scenes between him and Persephone.. Well let’s just say the chemistry between those two is crazy hot!

I really liked the relationships between Persephone x Jax and Persephone x Adrastos. I was team Jax from the moment he forced his way into Persephone's life. He was sexy, funny and sexy.. Oh I already said that, still it needs to be doubly mentioned! I found Adrastos’ affections to be a little creepy and the whole tattoo thing was weird,but I’m pretty sure that’;s the vibe I was meant to be feeling. Even though Adrastos wasn't as good as Jax (In my opinion of course) the scenes between he and Persephone are quite steamy and he is sexy in his own right. I think the fact that Persephone was actually in love with, or at least greatly liked, them both was refreshing. It wasn't a typical love triangle and I’m glad the author didn't try and play one of the relationships off as fake.

I really enjoyed the book. It was a fun read and I loved the banter between Persephone and Jax. I’d really recommend this to an YA lover especially if you have a passion for Greek Mythology.(less)

I read this in one day so had to mark it as "could not put it down books". It isn't an all time favorite or anything like that but it definitely kept me reading.

It is based loosely on mythology, but it is set in modern day and Persephone (she was named after the Goddess - she isn't one) is a high school student with a secret. Her Gram has died but she does not dare tell anyone that she is living alone because she is hiding an ancient artifact, the Hades Dagger which could turn demons into daywalkers. Her house has been warded by a Voo doo friend, and Persephone is the last Sentry alive with the sole responsibility of guarding the dagger. Failing her task would result in unleashing hell on earth. In this story there are demons on earth but they can only come out at night and they cloak themselves in the guise of humans.

I thought this girl and her feelings was believable as she has suffered the loss of her family but has been taught from childhood the responsibility of the Sentries and knows now that it is hers alone. Her very human insecurities and emotions make sense as she struggles with living not just this secret but another one she considers a curse.

I suppose you could say there is a love triangle in this story although it is not the typical one. Jax, a young Warrior of the same order she belongs to enters the picture and is determined to protect her. She does not want protecting nor does she want him in her life. Although she is attracted to him, Persephone has been in love with another for two years. Adrastos is off fighting other battles against demons but has promised to come for her and to protect her. But she only knows him in dreams - dreams so real that he places a tattoo on her neck in a dream that is there when she wakes.

A couple of minor items of interest. Persephone has a cat. A cat named Turtle. I like books where the characters have a cat - or a dog. She also plays soccer which may be of interest to some (like my granddaughters).

The first part of this book is as so many books are, setting the scene and introducing the characters and setting. The second half moves FAST and reaches a very tense and exciting conclusion. I do not believe this book is a series. I hope not as I liked it as a stand alone.

I liked the way the writing was done. It is not in the first person but it goes back and forth between Persephone and Jax allowing the reader to see into the thoughts and feelings of both of them. It worked very well. Fun read on a rainy day.(less)

Anyway, I had some pretty big expectations for DEMONS OF THE SUN. You all know how I'm so obsessed with greek mythology and romance and kick-butt heroines. And luckily, this debut book by Cindi certainly didn't disappoint. In fact, it exceeded it and more! This had everything I love in a book. Woot wooot!!

I loved Persephone. Such a kick ass character and what I most loved about her is her stubbornness. Yeah, sometimes you just want to kick some sense into her, but you understand her actions and damn you feel so sorry for all that she had lost. This girl has some major flaws: she can be downright mean and bitchy. But I guess that made her more interesting, in my opinion. Well to be honest, if I was her (protecting something like that), I'd probably end up a whole lot worse.So I can't really blame her :P Oh and before I forget, I just can't get over the fact that P plays some sport. Seriously. YES YES YES. Finally a girl who plays football/soccer in a YA book!!

Jax is definitely my new book boyfriend. This sexy warrior is just SO cocky. And sweet and caring and snarky. Basically, my dream guy. At the end of the book, he is nothing like what the guy we met at the beginning. His character growth and development (along with Persephone) was amazing. Obviously, I have to mention the other characters. Well, Dean and Danielle (Persephone's best friends) added some very much light tone to the story. Which I thought was good. And I really loved them too as her friends.

Now, this book is heavy on the romance. And you guys KNOW how much I love 'em type of books. The chemistry between Persephone and Jax was WHOA. Seriously, it was freaking sizzling. Their fighting and banter was my favourite, and OMG I just love them so much as a couple. Need more Persephone and Jax, please!

The plot, while slow at parts especially the near the end, still contains the perfect amount of action and romance. I couldn't stop reading this; couldn't put it down for the life of me. I don't really want to say anything about the story (since it'll be full of spoilers) but what I can tell you is that you wouldn't see some stuff coming. Why some are predictable (especially who someone really is), this book overall definitely surprised me. In a very good way! :)

Overall, I would highly highly recommend this to greek myth lovers (like moi), peeps who love snarky characters and umm a whole lot of chemistry. I can't wait to read more of Cindi's work and definitely will read anything she writes.

It’s an action packed story with a big helping of kisses in a world that has been built from a storyteller who pays attention to details.

Cindi has managed to give us a hero that is confident enough to be considered cocky, yet not so cocky that he’s a jerk. Jax is a perfect mixture of cocky and sweetness. One might say he’s a sweet…oh, no never mind. That’d be going too far. Just know that Jax is mighty crush worthy and…well, I love him. The dialogue he delivers will have you giggling on more than one occasion.

We get an equally strong heroine. YAAAAY! Persephone is one of those girls that you look at and think, “Man! Things would have been so much easier for me if I had just a little of the bravery and mad skills she has!” Only, Persephone’s life is faaaaaar from easy. Being badass just comes naturally to her and she wears it very well.

The relationship between Persephone and Jax, our hero and heroine, starts off quickly. “A little TOO quickly”, I thought to myself while reading. However, there is reason for this and you’ll just have to believe me when I say that it’ll make sense soon. As a matter of fact, there is much to be learned about the world that Cindi has created and its rich in details. World building is an important part of urban fantasy, dare I say the second most important part, and this book nailed it. I could almost smell New Orleans and its dark secrets while reading this story.

Kissing is number one in urban fantasy. Heck, it’s number one in ANY book as far as I’m concerned. And the kissing here is my favorite kind of kissing. The slow building, tense situations, OHMYGODARETHEYGOINGTOKISSORNOT kind of moments that I love in a romantic relationship. There is another kind of kissing going on in Persephone’s life, too. It’s a type of kissing that I’ve certainly participated in before, but have not seen written about. Nice one, Cindi!

I have to start by saying this completely blew my expectations away. Not that I didn't think I would like it, because if that was the case, I wouldn't have even read it. No, it's because with so many books on mythology, and fantasy it becomes harder and harder to make a creative story that I really can become invested in. Well, this one was awesome! I absolutely loved it!! Not only was it creative and engaging, but it had a great amount of action, romance, and mystery element to it. (Though, me...more I have to start by saying this completely blew my expectations away. Not that I didn't think I would like it, because if that was the case, I wouldn't have even read it. No, it's because with so many books on mythology, and fantasy it becomes harder and harder to make a creative story that I really can become invested in. Well, this one was awesome! I absolutely loved it!! Not only was it creative and engaging, but it had a great amount of action, romance, and mystery element to it. (Though, me being little miss perceptive, I totally had it figured out pretty early on. It didn't however change my enjoyment of the story.) I was sucked in immediately and then quickly became attached to the characters. Oh, and Dual POV guys!! You know how much I love those!!!

Persephone has her hands full with a family passed down job of guarding Hades Dagger and keeping it out of the Demons hands. She also has a lot of secrets that she has to keep. That proves to become increasingly difficult as more time passes and the danger is drawing near. Then there's the whole falling in love with her warrior protector, Jax. She tries to keep him at a distance, but she soon realizes that not only does she need him, she really wants him by her side too. She is strong, not only because she has been trained to be a Sentry, but because her life has been a nightmare. She wants so badly at times to just give in and give up. She feels like it would be so much easier, but she knows that she has a duty and she will protect the dagger no matter what.

It didn't take me very long to fall for Jax. I mean yeah, he's cocky and arrogant, but he's also strong, charming, and sweet. Being that this goes between Persephone's POV to Jax we actually get to know him really well. I loved being in his mind. I loved knowing what he was thinking. Persephone just unravels him. She is so fierce and feisty that he is intrigued by her. It doesn't take him long to realize she is more than just a mission to him. He is very open to her about his feelings too, even when she keeps shooting him down which made my heart flutter. He was so adamant about making sure she stayed safe, but he also knew that he had to give a little or she would shut him out again. I also love that he says things that come out totally wrong and has to find a way to fix it or make it right. After all he is still a teenage boy.

What I really enjoyed more than anything was the fact that we get all the information as we need it. No info dump, but also we know what is going on. There's never any confusion. Also thank you Cindi Madsen for making the romance believable and realistic. No insta-love here!! There is a slight love triangle, but it's not really. I can't really go into it without giving spoilers, but this is coming from someone who rolls their eyes at the dreaded love triangle and I am telling you the romance in this is fantastic!! I love the battle between good and evil that Persephone struggles with in herself as well as the impending war. I loved the characters, loved the plot, loved the mythology. Basically I think you can tell that I loved this book. The only thing that I don't like is that it's currently a standalone and I really want more of this world and characters. For those of you who don't want to commit to a series, or hate Cliffhanger endings, this book is a perfect choice!!(less)

Demons of the Sun is a blend of mythology and the paranormal that created an action packed Urban Fantasy. There was never a dull moment. While the plot was interesting, it was the characters that made this book even better for me.

(I had a preview copy of this book and was one of the first to ever read it. So proud. (: ) This book is absolutely wonderful!! I loved every page, the writing is beautful and you can't stop turning the pages! I loved how greek mythology was intertwined through out, and the characters were perfect too. Persopone was the all time relatable heroine, and JAX.... was perfect. Lets just say I fell in love with him...... multiple times! Its a definite must read and I can't wait for more from Cindi Mad...more

I’d been looking forward to reading ‘Demons of the Sun’ for so long. Unlike the rest of the YA world, I haven’t jumped on too many Greek Myth stories, so I went into it with a mostly clear head; but I was really interested to see what Cindi Madsen came up with. I was not disappointed.

Strong willed, skilled with a weapon or two, and independent in her thinking and actions. She’s one you just can’t help loving. I adored the opening scenes of ‘Demons of the Sun’ because we got to see Persephone in action straight away. A break-in at your house, late at night? No problem, the many weapons hidden in the rooms and the handy flipping coffee table make for good objects for defence! Persephone keeps this up throughout the whole book. She’s an action girl – despite the need to sometimes fall back and stay protected.

‘Demons of the Sun’ has a heavy focus on mythology and the paranormal, especially when it comes to Persephone’s task in life, protecting the Hades Dagger. As the name suggests, the dagger belongs to Hades himself; ruler of the underworld and master of the demons (creatures of the underworld that come out at night) If Hades has control of the dagger, demons will be able to walk the human world in the daytime. The destruction that would come from this would be impossible to stop. When this information popped up, I couldn’t help thinking of the Persephone myth and wondering whether Cindi would draw on it completely or deviate into her own world more. The connection between Persephone and Hades is well known and I was interested to see if it would be a major part of this story too. I loved the inclusion of Myths and Gods. Even though she grew up and lives in the United States, Persephone defaults to the Greek Gods and myths when praying for miracles. The legends and beliefs have been taught to her so strongly, that nothing – not time or space – pulls her apart from the world she’s been brought up in.

The romance in this story almost killed me. Hard to avoid the heart wrenching when you've got such an intense love triangle. Persephone is torn between the man of her dreams – literally – and the strong, handsome Warrior who is trying to protect her. Adrastos has always been on Persephone’s mind, and she lives for the moments he turns up in her dreams and professes his love for her. But then there’s Jax, who rarely sees the kind side of Persephone because she’s determined to do everything her way or no way at all; Persephone struggles to decider what she feels for him. I fell for Jax instantly, and not just because I’d heard amazing things about him. The fact that he was someone solid and caring, who didn’t just promise to be there for Persephone but was there for her, made my heart melt. He was cheeky, dangerous and there was a moment where I was so close to tears I didn’t think I could love him, and his relationship with Persephone, any more than I already did. Adrastos’s influence does make the battle for Persephone’s heart interesting though.

The ending wraps everything up perfectly, but leaves you with enough questions and possibilities that it’s open for more adventures in the future. The danger Persephone and Jax face is more than they’ve come across before and there were times when I thought it might be too much for Persephone to handle – but she’s stronger than she looks.

I really enjoyed 'Demons of the Sun' and I hope for more books from this world in the future, because I’m certain there are more exciting stories to be told.

The plot is amazing, demons, a dangerous dagger artifact that puts everyone's life at risk and keeps the plot turning and. I'm for the love and the longing--the tension between the couples.

Cindi does that perfectly. My daughter also loved this book.

Shelves: favorite-love-interest-hotties

I have a slight obsession with all things Greek Mythology, so I kinda knew going in that I would love this one. I also happen to think the author, Cindi Madsen, is pretty much made of all things awesome and witty, so that gave me a good clue, too. But I never expected to like this story as much as I did, where I was getting angry with my Kindle as the percent left kept getting smaller and smaller.

Demons of the Sun has everything I love about this genre: a relatable, strong, snarky heroine with hidden depths and vulnerability; a smooth-talking, hot as heck boy with a major protective vibe and sweet side to boot; a vivid setting--New Orleans--filled with mystery and cool details (okay, that just so happens to be where I grew up, so bonus points); and an array of secondary characters that added richness to the story and brought out different sides to our main girl, Persephone.

The action and pacing was spot on and perfect. In an effort to get healthy and reward myself while doing so, I often carve out my reading time by walking on the treadmill. I kid you not, I slowed down my pace so I could stay on the darn thing longer, just so I could keep reading. And when I finished the book on my recent plane ride back from Toronto, I may've been getting into the action scenes a bit much by jerking my body and fist pumping the air. It's all right...I'm used to odd looks in public. But seriously, the action was fun and paired with just the right amount of swoon-worthy romance.

Jax is one of my new book boyfriends....and I have to say, um, so is Adrastos.Yes, Jax wins this round for sure and is totally the right person for Persephone, but I can't help loving how Cindi crafted Adrastos. I didn't get nearly enough of these two yummy boys and have my eyes, fingers, and toes crossed that we may get to read more in the future (ahem, cough, cough. ~eyes Ms. Madsen~)

If you love paranormal, heroines who kick butt, hot protective book boyfriends that make you swoon, and are a sucker for all things Greek Mythology like me, Demons of the Sun is the perfect book for you.

Fast paced and hard to put down. Great story. I can't wait to get an autographed copy for my daughters--I love a good heroine who stands up for herself. This is so the opposite of Twilight--well written, believable characters, and the main character isn't a self-absorbed, vacuous twit.

I hope this is the first in a series, because I'd love to see what happens next. That's the sign of a good book, when you get to the end and you immediately want more.

I really enjoyed it. Loved the main character and her swoon-worthy Warrior! Who doesn't love a hot egotistical self-appointed protector? (And where can I find one for me? Seriously?) I'm looking forward to reading a lot more from Cindi in the future.

This was a fanstatic first novel from Cindi. Persephone is a great heroine. Alive, wonderful, brave, scared, indecisiv and impulsive. Jax was a gift from God! Read the book you won't regret it.

I really enjoyed reading this book! Jax is now one of my favorite characters- not nearly as cocky as others. I loved the idea of the Sentries. Very creative and fun!

Demons of the Sun is a good story with a realistic heroine.
However, the relationship between Jax and Persephone moved very quickly.
Also, parts of the story, I feel, needed a little bit more explanation.

Interesting novel about demons with the added twist of Greek Mythology. I liked the storyline, but - maybe I'm just greedy - I wanted more background into the characters and I thought the world-building could have used more substance. All in all though, it was a good, fun read.

For me, this falls somewhere between "liked it" and "really liked it" so I'm going with 3.5 stars
