Absolutely hilarious, extremely funny and with a very tongue-in-cheek lesson about the long-term benefits of being slutty and materialistic, this story had me somewhere between smiling and laughing out loud the entire time. Jamie, the first-person narrator of this story, is one of those college students who is very open to experiments, and Roger is the exact opposite. The fact that Roger is an art student and somewhat more conservative than most people would expect makes this all the funnier.

The fact that Roger is an art student and somewhat more conservative than most people would expect makes this all the funnier.

Jamie has a very peculiar philosophy about helping men to realize they are gay and about ‘widening the horizons of straight guys’, as he put is. He almost thinks of himself as delivering a service to the community and that made me laugh. In essence, he gets to have sex with a wide variety of guys, but he pretends it is for their benefit. I loved the lesson he learns in the end: that is not all there is under the sun, and as soon as he finds ‘the one’, he is just as smitten as Roger. Not that Jamie would ever admit that. He remains true to himself to the very end, and his voice remains his own.

Roger is a bit of a riddle, as we only see him through Jamie’s eyes. I loved the eventual discovery of what he is all about, but won’t go into detail here. It would spoil the surprise.

Some people are sure to misunderstand this story, but I loved its sarcastic tone and snarkiness. It certainly makes this book stand out, and I love authors who give their characters individual voices. There is nothing wrong with being different, and voices like this authors’ are a refreshing breath of diversity in a genre where the ‘standard’ is very defined and ‘disturbed’ by few. If you like humor in your m/m romances, if you’re looking for something different and are open to reading about an interesting yet possibly somewhat abrasive character, and if you don’t mind a lot of very explicit encounters, you will like this story as much as I did.

I liked that we actually got to know a few of the guys he’s with and as some noted, if the idea of him sleeping with others after he met “the one” irks you and you like your romance more “pure”, this will likely drive you nuts. Although he’s not dating, in fact he doesn’t even like Roger and gets some pretty negative reactions from the guy, so why would he not sleep with other people? I liked his attitude. He’s not mean about it, he doesn’t hurt people and he’s always sure to make the sex enjoyable. It’s not just about him using people, and he gets worried when he thinks Bill might be imprinting on him and scrambles to find the guy a girlfriend.

There are a few subplots, getting his cousin less-fixated on the smooth jerk and more on the goofy nerd who likes her, finding a girl kinky enough to indulge Bill, and “helping” the gay guy in the closet embrace his rainbow side. But it all fits well, and when Jamie FINALLY clues in that while he didn’t much pay attention to his reputation or what people thought, maybe he does care that he’s now the go-to guy for straight guys who want to try gay sex. Between that and constantly running into Roger, who one minute is kissing him and the next giving him the evil eye, it’s a chance for him to reassess his life a bit.

What works is Jamie’s not a jerk. Yeah, he gives lots of straight guys blow-jobs, but he’s not tricking them, he’s not leading anyone on, no harm no foul and he’s basically a nice guy. His relationship with his cousin was nice. She is NOT the interfering female we see so often. Sure, she has a habit of barging into his room unannounced, and she doesn’t ‘get’ his fascination with chasing straight boys, but when he has “guests” and they leave she just shrugs it off. She’s not trying to change him, but maybe understand him, which gives us a chance to understand him as he explains it to her. It comes across very naturally though.

It does end just at the beginning of the relationship with Roger. Most of the book is him with other random guys off and on, but I was okay with that. Some might like more, but I have a propensity myself to stop at the beginning, so it worked for me. I find the journey to that point more interesting, and I always assume they just go on to have a “normal” relationship, nothing overly dramatic. :-)

So, as long as self-professed slutty college boys don’t annoy you, I think you’ll enjoy Jamie’s good-nature and his chance to look at his life, along with his relationship with his cousin Jo.(less)

. I loved her novella and I've been enjoying her stories ever since. Academic Pursuits is another charming and fun novella that made me smile when I read it.

Our main protagonist is Jamie Brennan. He is enjoying college life immensely and his main pastime is seducing straight boys, in fact, he is so good at it, that straight guys actually approach him to find out if they are going through an identity crisis, or just want to experiment and get it out of their systems.

Because everyone seem to like him, Jamie is surprised when ruggedly handsome and lumberjack impersonator, Roger Hunt, gives him the evil eye every time they cross paths. Jamie feels attracted to Roger, but he's also annoyed and angry at him, so he does his best to avoid him. But there’s more to Roger than meets the eye, thus the question is will they be able to see past their preconceived notions and prejudices and actually get to know who they really are? Will Jamie be able to settle down?

This was a light and fun novella and I was surprised by how much I liked it considering that the romance isn’t really its main focus. It’s the story of a young man enjoying life as a college student, misbehaving and trying to push some boundaries. He comes from a rich family and he’s trying to be a bit of a rebel. Most of the story is about his sexcapades and Roger is a romantic interest but not really a main character. Jamie has a blasé take on sex and when he says that he can separate sex from love, he actually means it and does it. This is not a tortured guy who uses sex as an escape from his troubled soul. He enjoys sex and doesn’t make excuses about it.

Another pleasant surprise was Jamie’s best friend, Jo. It’s unusual to find female characters with such prominent roles in m/m romance, and especially those portrayed under a positive light, so I was glad that she was one of the main characters. They have a tight relationship full of trust and banter and it was an accurate representation of friendship. She does end up falling under the sidekick label, she helps him find love and is a bit clumsy in the love department, but overall I liked her.

The romance was a bit lacking, but there are some romantic moments and a happy ending that’s more of a happy beginning than anything else. I admit that I don’t know if these characters will grow old together, but I’m sure that regardless of how long their relationship last, they will have fun and will be happy with each other.

If you read this book thinking that you will get the greatest romance story ever written, then you will be disappointed. If you read it thinking that you will spend a couple of fun and light moments in company of a very likeable character, then you will love it.

I'm rather enjoying these Hot College Daze stories from Amber Allure and this one was no exception. It tells of super slutty student, Jamie, who's intelligent and hard working but also likes to set himself various targets for seducing straight guys. This is working well for him and as the story starts he's just about finished with his latest conquest, Hollins, and is moving onto the next. However, Jamie is having a little trouble shaking Hollins and his next conquest takes a surprising turn. Added to this is art student Roger who looks at Jamie like he's dirt, but manages to get under Jamie's skin, and a huge crush that Jamie has on his Russian Lit professor.

How much you like the story will depend on how much you like Jamie. He really is very slutty, and is totally unrepentant about it. If you're the sort of reader who likes the main romantic pairing to not sleep with anyone else during the course of the book then this may not be the story for you because Jamie sleeps with at least three other guys in this book. I found I rather liked Jamie. His cheerful and optimistic attitude was endearing and I liked that he didn't have any underlying psychological problems to his sleeping around. He just liked sex and wanted to share the love :). Seducing straight guys is just a bit of fun for him, but in the case of this book it also has very positive outcomes for all involved - some of which made me laugh and others which made me go awwww.

I also liked the relationship which Jamie has with his cousin/room-mate Jo. She's one of the best female friend characters I've read for a while. They liked each other's company, confided in each other and helped each other out. There was no unwanted advice or criticism given, and definitely no interfering - unless you count Jo's habit of bursting into Jamie's bedroom at inopportune moments, which I found funny rather than annoying, and Jamie offering fashion advice to a guy crushing on Jo (again this was a very amusing scene).

The story as a whole has a great lighthearted and fun feel to it and I read the story quickly, keen to find out who Jamie was going to end up with. Despite all the sex, the story is also very romantic as we are shown several different types of romances involving the people that Jamie comes into contact with during the book.

Any niggles I have about the story relate to the end. It was just a little too abrupt. Ten-fifteen pages towards the end, Jamie still hadn't managed to get together with the guy he ends up with. Then it happens and the book is over. I was a little disappointed that Jamie spends more time with other men in the story than he does with the guy he sails off with into a HFN. I needed to see more of them together to be happy and if I'm honest, I felt cheated a little at the end.

Don't let the ending out you off though because this was still a great book. If you're looking for an amusing and lighthearted story with a witty and likable hero, then you can't really go wrong with this story. (less)

When an unlikely suitor begins to pursue him with the intention of something more meaningful than a one night stand, Jamie initially bristles but eventually has to make a big decision.

I tried from the beginning of this story to like it, but I’ve got to be honest: I could not stand the protagonist. The story was a first person narrative, told in the voice of the main character, and he was sarcastic, snarky, rude, abrasive, arrogant, and oftentimes offensive. He struck me as someone who felt it was funny to put other people down, and by doing this he made himself feel better. Oddly, he had no reason to act this way. He was attractive, intelligent, outgoing, and very popular. He reminded me of the sort of person who goes around bragging about how much of a bitch they are.

In defense of this author, I would add that this is perhaps a very realistic portrayal of some (many) gay men. It gave me flashbacks of the bar scene in my younger years, where the guys who knew how attractive they were flitted around acting campy and tried to compete with each other by telling the snappiest insults.

I like to think that by the end of the story Jamie had learned something and perhaps started to evaluate beauty in a different light. I am not sure this was really the case though. It seemed more that the message was that it is okay to be materialistic, ego-centric, and shallow. This carrousel of sex partners that Jamie cavorted with were all guys that he just used and discarded, and he seemed to have no conscience about it. When he finally stopped this behavior, it was not because he had an epiphany or even a sudden surge of morality. He merely felt sorry for himself because he saw other people in happy relationships while he was alone.

The writing itself was fantastic. I hope that there are other books by this author that I may enjoy, but I’ve got to say that this type of sardonic humor is just not for me.

Everyone seems to like Jamie but art student Roger Hunt. Although Jamie is attracted to the big guy with the lumberjack wardrobe, whenever they see one another Roger is giving him hostile looks. It takes some time for Roger and Jamie each to begin to see one another in a new light, but when they do there may be more in store for Jamie than he expected.

I really enjoyed watching Jamie grow and change through the course of this book. Although the story ultimately comes around to the relationship between Roger and Jamie, the vast majority of the focus is on Jamie himself. We follow him through a series of hookups as he seduces various men -- gay, straight, and in the closet. Yet as he watches those around them finding love and happiness in a real partnership, he begins to realize the hollowness of his lifestyle and that he really wants something with more meaning. Despite his constant efforts at seduction, Jamie is really quite likeable. He is friendly, caring towards the men he is with, generous, and a overall good guy.

I wish we could have gotten to know Roger a bit more in this story however. As I said, most of the book focuses on Jamie and his self-discovery. He and Roger don't really interact for the first time until about halfway through the book and things don't really kick off between them until very late in the story. The romance between them is there, but it is not the primary focus. So I didn't feel I got a chance to get as much of sense of Roger or what was drawing the two men to one another besides physical attraction.

I really enjoyed Jamie's interaction with his cousin Jo, with whom he lives. I am always excited to see a real fleshed out female character in m/m romance as they seem to be few and far between. Jo is a best friend and confidant and she provides a great sounding board to Jamie as he works through his feelings. And Jamie returns the favor, supporting Jo and even helping out by treating the guy who likes her to a makeover to help him gain the confidence to ask Jo out. I loved their relationship and the key role she plays in the story.

The story also touches on a really interesting concept related to Jamie's hookups with the straight guys. When one of them comes to him afterwards thinking he must be gay if he enjoyed the sex, Jamie reassures him that "we haven't done anything that a straight couple with imagination and a few toys couldn't do." I liked the exploration of the concept that the sex and the feelings are not the same thing, and that someone could enjoy a sexual experience but that isn't the same thing as attraction or real feelings. I also think it illustrates nicely Jamie's changing feelings as he starts to realize he wants more than to be just the person these guys get off with, but wants someone who really feels something for him emotionally as well as physically.

This was my first book by Harper and I really enjoyed the author's voice and the characters in the story. I did find myself wishing for more time with the main characters and more focus on their relationship. But I think the story does a great job showing Jamie's personal growth and development as well as touching on some interesting issues. I enjoyed Academic Pursuits and will definitely look for more by this author in the future.

Entertaining and the writing's pretty good, but...didn't really feel like a romance (MC & love interest don't even get together until the last 10% or so of the story. Before that, they exchanged maybe a handful of words. Even their little argument doesn't last more than maybe a few seconds' worth.) More like a chronicle of the MC's sexual exploits. By the end, he shows maybe a hint of some teeny, tiny potential for personal growth (we don't get to see if this is actualized).

Oh, I liked this book WAY better than I expected! While I'm not one that has a problem with non-monogamy, I'm not real big on over-the-top-promiscuity either. An entertaining enough read about Jamie, who is a rich, good looking man whore college student and Roger, a fellow student and sculptor.
There was plenty of sex, but most of it was Jamie with other people (not Roger) and the two main characters took too long to get together IMO.

I can't really call this one a romance, because Jaime doesn't get with Roger until very late in the book. It does centre around their growing relationship, but this book is pretty much the Jaime show and the men in his life until he finally gets with Roger. I am not sure I like Jaime very much and it has nothing to do with him being a little slutty, I just could not bring myself to love him. Ultimately Jaime is a nice guy, who sometimes goes over board with the whole seduction thing but in the end he always ends up alone.

We follow him through many hook-ups with the straight boys, the gay boys, and the closet cases. While he sprouts philosophical ideas on sexuality which I found to be the most enjoyable part of the book. When he goes off on a tangent with his cousin Jo, explaining to her the finesse on he lands his conquest and that it's all a little experimenting on their part and in no way does it make them gay. I don't read many books that explain that it's a lot more than sex that makes a gay man, and just because you like something in your ass now and again doesn't mean a damn thing.

Overall, I liked the story but something was missing for me. In all honesty I think it has a lot to do with Jaime because I don't really like him all that much. His narrative is humorous but at often times seemed overly obnoxious. I do enjoy Lou Harpers writing style it's crisp and fun, I just had a real hard time connecting to the story and the characters.

A nice inbetween read. It starts a little slow and takes some time to gain flight, but I'm glad I stayed with it. I wouldn't call it a romance exactly, although there are romantic parts in the story. It's more about Jamie's life at college and growing up a little.
I liked Jamies very straightforward voice. The directness and a fine sense of humour give it a comic-like sound in places that fit right in there with the MCs personality.

I was engrossed from the first sentence. The author managed to make Jamie a sympathetic character regardless of his reputation as being the seducer of straight guys. My only complain is the ending. It was too abrupt. There ought to be a bit more to the story and it should not have ended on the first morning.

2 stars. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't really warm up to Jamie. He was so slutty and then was pretty surprised that he had a 'reputation'. (of course you do, you sleep with everyone!) Writing was fine, but the story line just wasn't my thing.

This story simply wasn't for me. I missed the emotions. Jamie was interesting as a character but for this plot he chased to many men. The romance between Roger and Jamie at the end, was to undeveloped and developed to fast.

There are only two words to describe this book, FUCKING HOT!!!! I love anything by Lou Harper! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I wanted more of Jamie and Roger.

Very good humorous m/m romance about a slutty but goodhearted college student who's just realizing that his habit of seducing straight guys has gotten him a bit of a reputation. Maybe it's time for a change...

I'm totally with Jeff's review; in addition I would like to mention that I felt no chemistry whatsoever between Jamie and Roger. There was just not enough of an interaction between them to develop anything like a relationship.

I enjoyed the writing and the story itself, but I did have some trouble liking the MC, Jamie. Still, a fun story that I liked by the end.

This is my first Lou Harper read and I enjoyed it. Jamie, although a self-described campus slut, is a likeable and friendly guy who is unabashedly pursuing straight men on campus. This was a cute story and Jamie experiences an amazing amount of growth in a short time. The story drags the reader along with Jamie's carefree attitude and it was a quick, fun read.
