Can you save someone from something that’s already happened?

Daniel’s expectations for his forced vacation with his father at the Leisure World Holiday Complex are low. He hates sports, and his father is mostly lost in drink and depression. But then he sees a strange girl swimming in the fake lake, and everything changes. Lexi has a smart mouth and a killer swim stroke, but...more

Daniel's father dragged him to Leisure World for a little holiday--something to do after Daniel caught his mom cheating. The sports-averse Daniel would rather be nearly anywhere else, until he meets Lexi. Lexi is beautiful, and smart, and troubled: every day, her wounds get a little worse. She won't talk about it, until Daniel gets caught in the same loop: (view spoiler)[2 years ago, she was dragged into the woods and killed; now she lives each year in reverse until that one Daylight Saving hour...more

Daniel and his father are spending their vacation at Leisure World, a sports-themed vacation complex. Daniel has no interest in sports or spending time with his depressed and often drunk father. While hanging out by the pond, Daniel sees a mysterious girl who swims beautifully. But each time he sees her, she seems to have accumulated more bruises and cuts-- and her watch ticks backwards. Daniel is drawn to her, and soon he finds mysterious cuts and bruises on his own body. Who is this strange gi...more

I loved this book. I devoured it a few hours after I bought it. I'd never heard of it but saw it in my local bookshop (Waterstones) and loved the shiny cover and description so was immediately tempted.

Daniel and his dad don't get on...for reasons you will discover in the book, so that's why Daniels dad takes him away. Daniel is still upset over his mum and dad getting a divorce and why his dad decided to take him on a sports holiday he has no idea..he hates sport.

Lexi is a ghost and relives her...more

I enjoyed Daylight Saving and found it to be a satifying little read.

Daylight saving is a thriller which follows the story of main character Daniel. Daniel is a likable protagonist. He has been dragged to Leisure World, a centre parcsesque holiday park where families are suppose to have a brilliantly exciting week indulging in a variety of sporting activites together and bonding over pizza in lakeside themed restaurants. Unfotunately for Daneil the idea sounds like the week from hell. He hates s...more

I loved this. Loved that it was from the male protagonist POV. Loved that the male protagonist wasn't ripped and drop dead gorgeous. Loved that there were real family problems and a sense of "I know these people" while reading the story. It flowed well; the plot was well thought out. Though I knew how it would end, I still hoped for it to end differently. There was a tiny bit of suspense and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Loved that Daniel was able to find himself and become the confident, s...more

I picked up this ARC at ALA last month--having never heard of the book or the author--and was happy to discover this intriguing, original story. It's part mystery, part family drama, part thriller, with a splash of romance (pun intended). The characters are imperfect and make some bad choices along the way which only made me root for them more.

The writing has a great balance of detail and action, and the story is fast paced--especially when more information about Lexi and the "rules" of this wo...more

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway and while it's probably not my usual reading fare I did enjoy it and couldn't help but want to keep reading to find out how the story concluded. I read a lot of American authors and it was a nice change to read something English, and having been to "leisure world" myself, a number of times, it was easy to picture the story in my head.
Daniel's father takes him to a holiday park for a week, which is basically his idea of hell. His physical self confidence is...more

When I requested this one on Netgalley, I totally must have missed the part of the summary that said it was a ghost story. So, imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I went in expecting a contemporary novel and wound up reading something that was definitely more than I expected -- in a good way.

When Daniel's father drags him to a sports complex for a father/son getaway, Daniel's expectations are low. He hates sports, and there's no possible way for him to enjoy himself, especially when his father -...more

For the most part, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It is a mystery, thriller, and paranormal romance all in one. I'm thrilled to see yet another male protagonist in this type of book. In a genre dominated by female protagonists, this book is a nice change of pace.

While the paranormal aspect was a large part of the narrative, it was not the driving theme of the story. The concept of coping with a broken family is the real focus, which makes the story more accessible, or realistic...more

Before I begin reviewing this book, I have to mention the book cover. If you saw my Really Random post last Tuesday, you would have seen the animated version of it and I have to say it truly is incredible. I was lucky enough to hear about the thought process that went into producing this cover and I found it thoroughly amazing.

As the story begins, you don't feel you are about to embark on a ghost story, but you are aware of a dark and sinister undertone as you analyse the first line. The book i...more

Gripping and brilliant. I loved what Edward Hogan did with the British Summer Time element - SO inspired and unique, and I'm not going to look at the clocks going forward/back in the same way again - or at least, when that does happen, I'll think of this clever little book.

The characters were all well-thought-out and realistic, especially Daniel and Lexi. When she was describing how lovely her family were, her happy life before, it was heartbreaking.

I was in a bit of a reading dip before but thi...more

This one just wasn't for me. The story line is very ambiguous and muddled with side plots. The main story (what I think is the main story) was very confusing until right at the very end. Is it a ghost story? Is he crazy? Is she real? It was hard to tell. In addition to the mysterious girl who causes all sorts of odd happenings, the main character, Daniel, has body issues associated with extremely low self esteem and is dealing with the divorce of his parents while living with his drunken dad. Oh...more

I have been so excited about this book ever since I was lucky enough to chat with Ed at the Walker Books book bloggers event at the end of last year. Everything about it was fab – the concept, the cover, the blurb, and then it arrived it was so shiny I had to stroke it for a few minutes before I even started reading it.
And it so didn’t disappoint.

One thing guaranteed to make me do a little happy dance is when we get strong male characters in fiction, and whilst Daniel isn’t your stereotypical ma...more

Daniel saw his mom with another man and his dad asked Daniel. Daniel couldn't lie and his parents separated. During a school holiday, Daniel and his Dad go to Leisure World, a forced sports recreation resort in England's countryside. Daniel is miserable until he meets Lexi, she is in the woods by herself and has unexplained injuries that get worse everyday. Daniel knows something is very wrong, he just needs to figure it out before it is to late.

This was an interesting story. Neither Daniel or h...more

Ok first of I won this book through Goodreads so thanks for that Goodreads and now to the book. Well what can I say? It was simply amazing. Very simply it is a modern day Ghost story. Daniel along with his father is taken to a leisure center; many would think this is fun but to Daniel it practically seems like torture; well that is until he meets Lexi a girl that only he can see... Ok so initially it seems like a pretty typical love story but you'll be surprised at how it evolves into so much mo...more

At a time when I feel I'm too busy with other things to read I managed to read this in a day so it must be good :)

Daniel gets dragged to a holiday park by his dad shortly after the breakdown of his parents marriage. As a slightly overweight kid he's not entirely happy about the emphasis on sports. He's in a bad way anyway, blaming himself for his mum and dad splitting up and having a hard time at school. Then he meets the mysterious Lexi and things are looking up. But she has wounds that seem to...more

A light, ghost/paranormal romance set in a cheesy European resort. Murdered girl has been dead for two years but appears to Daniel, who is struggling with guilt issues over his parents' breakup. He of course tries to change the past by time traveling back to the moment, which reappears very year at the point of changing back from daylight savings time.

Not much depth, but fun to read. Hogan tries to create a theme of letting go of things, but it didn't really take off. It's more a book chroniclin...more

This book fits the "a book with a male main character" square on my bingo board.
I decided to read this book because I was having a stroll through the library and I liked the cover. A character I found interesting was Lexi because nobody except for Daniel can see her and everything she touches turns invisible and she ends up being a ghost who was raped and killed by an old man on 31/10/10(Halloween). Something new that I learned from this book is that history is like a circle because it repeats i...more

Excellent young adult book - mystery, fantasy, smart girl, clueless dad, determined boy, miscreant authority figures, a murderer (a creepy murderer).

Daniel thinks he is blamed for the breakup of his parents' marriage. He is (dragged) on vacation with his father, who now drinks far too much and too often - to a sports resort, not where he wants to be, at all, and he is not good at sports. Daniel meets a girl, whom no one else seems to be able to see. He notices that her watch moves backwards! Da...more

The Good

The pace. At no point while reading did I feel like the story was dragging. The plot was intense and suspenseful without feeling rushed.
Daniel's Dad. While Daniel's dad did have a lot of personal problems, I really thought he was hilarious and had some of the best lines in the book.
The loop. The time travel/ghost rules introduced in this book were really unique and interesting. I really liked (and was horrified by) the idea of a time-looped ghost, very creative.
The ending. As I c...more

I received this book as a ARC for doing reviews on my local teen library blog.

When Daniel and his dad go to Leisure World, a sports holiday complex, to get away from reality for a bit, he’s not holding out much hope for a great week. That is until he meets a girl, Lexi. He starts hanging out with her more and more and as he does, he notices bruises on her face, arms and legs that seem to get worse, and that the watch she wears is ticking backwards instead of forwards. Both Daniel and Lexi help...more

I have to say this book was really interesting because it took a step back from what one normally reads in the YA genre. This book had a male character as the narrator, which hardly ever happens in young adult books. The book also centered on something more important than a love triangle or instant love. This book went beyond that to look closely at the life of a slightly overweight teenage boy who starts to find his own way in life th...more

Dat blij...more

We are first introduced to Daniel as he is in his way with his Dad to a Leisure World Sports holiday complex. Daniel is overweight and hates sports so he thinks its pointless going to the sports holiday complex, until he meets the mysterious Lexi There are things that we don't know about both Lexi and Daniel, and as the story progresses we find out what Daniel blames himself for and why he ended up on holiday with his Dad.

I loved the mystery of Daylight Saving and how Daniel pieces together the...more

Daniel’s life is problematic since his parents are no longer together, his father is an alcoholic, and he’s the victim of bullying. He and his father go to a sports resort for a vacation, which isn’t as relaxing as it sounds since Daniel runs into a group of rough boys, his father’s moods and drinking habits kick into gear, and the workers at the resort don’t respect people’s privacy.

When Daniel meets Lexi, a girl who’s out for a swim, he develops a quick connection to her. She’s beautiful, inte...more

Review Taken From The Pewter Wolf

When Daniel goes to Leisure World Holiday Complex with his dad, his exceptions are low. He doesn't like sport and he's uncomfortable with his body. And let's not get started on his dad's issues. So when Daniel meets Lexi, a mysterious girl, by the lake, things look like they're on the up. She's smart and makes him laugh. But, is it his imagination or does Lexi's wounds look worse every time they meet? And why does Lexi wear a watch that goes backwards?

Now, I fee...more

When Daniel is taken to Leisure World by his father it really is his worst nightmare rather than an ideal fun family holiday. Overweight and unfit Daniel isn't a fan of sports and isn't looking forward to days full of tennis, cycling and swimming. After meeting Lexi things start to change, he is drawn to this mysterious girl and wants to uncover her secrets. What caused her injuries and why do they get worse every time he sees her? Is there any way he can protect her from something that has alre...more

As a big fan of ghost stories you can imagine how pleased I was when I won this as a goodreads giveaway.
This book made for a fairly quick read (took me two days) and despite the wintery colours on the cover, it would make for a good summer read.
Due to the book's size, it was naturally quite fast-paced and the plot moved along nicely.
I never got to a point where I just couldn't be bothered to read anymore, it kept me hooked pretty much all the way through.
At first, I was a little worried that i...more

I received this book from the goodreads firstreads giveaway. I loved this book, it's eerie and at the same time very realistic. The main character came from a situation that anyone could identify with and encounters something unbelievable and does everything in his power to resolve his new problem. I'm trying not to give anything away, so this review is pretty vague, but please believe me when I say this is a awesome entertaining read. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in superna...more
