It was great to be reunited with Day and June again after so long. I believe Legend was the very first ARC I ever read, before I even knew what an ARC was (I won it) so it's a bit special to me. I easily found my way back into this story even after so long; a feat in of itself considering my lack of memory (it's scary how much I forget by the time a sequel releases). Prodigy lives up to its predecessor, maybe even surpassing it with the incredible progress in the world development--which was som...more It was great to be reunited with Day and June again after so long. I believe Legend was the very first ARC I ever read, before I even knew what an ARC was (I won it) so it's a bit special to me. I easily found my way back into this story even after so long; a feat in of itself considering my lack of memory (it's scary how much I forget by the time a sequel releases). Prodigy lives up to its predecessor, maybe even surpassing it with the incredible progress in the world development--which was something I was a tad disappointed by in Legend. We finally discover the reason for the current state of this world; we get to understand a lot more of what it now comprises of, both tangibly and politically. In consequence, the plot itself is a little slower paced than Legend, however I doubt this will lead to many complaints seeing as how much more we learn about the complexities of their affairs.

I remember thinking, while reading Legend, that this series was a perfect example of dual POV done right. I still agree with this fact; Day and June are two very different characters, reflected both by their voices and personalities. Switching from one character to the next is painless and never disorienting, nor did I ever lose track of which POV I was currently reading (many dual POVs tend to blend into one another). In this sequel, we observe a lot of character growth in which both Day and June are fighting against deeply rooted indoctrinated beliefs, not knowing who they should trust in this messed up world anymore. This inner turmoil is shown throughout the book, making it it's easy to see and sympathize with their personal struggles. Day and June being separated for a large part of book means there is not a great deal of romance, though in my opinion this was greatly needed for them to be free to find themselves; to figure out where they belong in this broken system.

Assassination and conspiracy rule the plot of this sequel. Despite my mention that it's not especially fast paced, there is plenty of commotion that advances the story. Besides character and world building, the plot takes on intriguing twists and turns, some predictable, but others that took me completely by surprise. Seeing more of the world means we finally visit the Colonies that we're all dying to see. It's only a glimpse, however. Just enough to make us crave for more, yearning to see every inch of this mysterious and talked up place. At least I'm sure we'll get to see more of it in the third book, so it wasn't too big a disappointment.

A sequel worthy of its name, Prodigy not only continues the story of our beloved Day an June, it strengthens and molds it, proving itself to be an essential part of this series.

Well, well, well. Here I am yet again eating my words. A year ago, when I read Legend, I complained about the world building. Mind you, I did think it was a fast-paced, exciting read, but it felt incomplete as a dystopian novel because I couldn't fully visualize how the society fit into the world as a whole. Prodigy was one of my most anticipated sequels of 2013. Unfortunately, it might be one of the most disappointing reads of the year as well, for the following reasons:

1. The beginning bored me to death. The recap was lacking and I felt lost reading the story for a very long time. Also, the first half was unbearably slow. I kept skimming through large chunks of the narration in hopes that the pace would eventually pick up but it took over 50% for the action to really get going.

Prodigy is better - the world-building is sharper, more precise, the characters are perfectly developed and their relationships are wonderfully polished. The improvement is impressive, and with that, we have an excellent follow-up to the first instalment and an exciting continuation of June and Day’s story.

The plot takes a different stance in this book, with the focus shifting to the role of the Patriots and their plans for the assassination of the new Elector Primo. As June and Day arrive in Vegas, they join the Patriots in an attempt to rescue Day’s younger brother and escape to the Colonies. In return for the Patriots’ assistance, the two must play a part in Anden’s death. This storyline works brilliantly. Prodigy, although initially slow-paced, is not devoid of action. Plenty of progression is made during this book without it being unrealistically staggering or overwhelming. The world-building is seamless, with little effort needed to comprehend the situation in Lu’s fictional America. We get a much better indication of the tension between the Colonies and Republic here than in Legend, and are even rewarded with a trip into the mysterious opposing side. In the meantime, Lu does not make the mistake of neglecting her characters.

Despite June and Day being painfully separated for a large part of the book, as in Legend, we get to follow the story through two perspectives, so there is ample opportunity for character development on both sides. June is as strong and determined as ever, and also suddenly more likable for it. Day is just as convincing, if not more, with a little sliver of vulnerability breaking through his street-toughened exterior. Their romance is not a focal part of the plot, but it is pleasingly present and emphasised in the most appropriate places. The two together make a wonderful team, and create just as much of an impression separately. If that was not evident in the first book, then it certainly is now.

There are hints of a potential love triangle (or perhaps even a love square), but these are not too pronounced. Lu is smart enough to keep it to a minimum, but makes the most of the occasion to sharpen Tess and Anden’s characters. As the new Elector Primo, and a very key individual of the story, the latter is the more interesting of the two, and Lu’s subtle development of him is excellently incorporated. Several other characters make an appearance in this book, most, if not all of them, adding just the right amount of weight and tension to the plot. Prodigy is one those books where, no matter who is narrating, or which set of characters is present, it is constantly engaging. Come the ending – and what an ending it is! – it is easy to appreciate the wider contribution each character makes.

Calling the last few pages a cliff-hanger doesn’t seem quite accurate here, but my poor emotions will tell you otherwise… It is shocking, heart-breaking, and unexpectedly bold. Not that further reason was needed to be back for the final instalment, but this certainly seals the deal.

It's been over a year since I read Legend, the first novel in the trilogy. Legend was no doubt my favorite dystopian and one of my favorite books last year! I loved everything about it, and I eagerly anticipated the release of the sequel. Now having finally read Prodigy...

Unfortunately, it didn't do it for me the way the first book did. It was a much more different reading experience for me. While Legend was engaging and had me hooked from the very beginning, I felt detached throughout Prodigy. I had hoped that feeling would ease by the time I was halfway, and I really wish I could have shaken off that feeling entirely. However, it never happened. And it greatly determined how I felt about the novel overall.

I think I can pinpoint what exactly bothered me while reading. It was the characters. In my review for Legend, I go on and on, praising the main characters Day and June and some of the secondary characters. This time around the characters didn't quite work for me. In fact, they either irritated me or I didn't care about them at all. Even when something horrible happened, none of them could get me to shed tears or root for them passionately. (Except maybe Metias, but sadly he's not of the living.) My problem with June and especially Day in this book stems from the fact that after everything they went through in the previous book, it seemed all they could do was question each other and question why the other would want to be with them. I understand why they would have doubts though. They haven't known each other long, and they met through heartbreaking circumstances. That's something they brought up throughout the course of the novel. But for me, all that did was make it seem like what they shared in Legend wasn't...real. I couldn't bring myself to believe in their relationship this time around, which is sad because I loved what they had before.

Another problem I had with the characters AND the romance was how Day and June attracted other characters' attention. Yes, there might have been a bit of a love-triangle or even a square. I know these things happen, especially considering a lot of people look up to them, but it was a bit too convenient that both of them had specific characters vying for their affection. I don't want to reveal too much of what happened; however, I can't help mentioning that Tess, Day's best friend, was involved. And she really annoyed the heck out of me. She pretty much wasn't the same character I came to care for in Legend. It was a bit of a shock to be honest. Basically, the romance in Prodigy wasn't what I had hoped, and I feel everything that happened with it only caused unnecessary drama that I didn't find entertaining one bit.

In the end, Prodigy left me feeling indifferent and uncaring for the characters and their struggles. I know I'm being harsher with this book than others, but it's hard not to be when its predecessor was a favorite of mine. Although right now I'm not feeling particularly enthused for the final book in the trilogy, I think I might still read it. Just to get some closure. Hopefully I appreciate it more than this book.(less)

I hope the author answers the ff questions in this book:
- Was it really Thomas who murdered Metias? Or was it somebody else?
- Who's the girl that Day met in the sewer? Or did I misunderstood that it was Tess.

- What would happen to June now that she betrayed the Republic?

LOVED IT!

What an AMAZING story!
It’s a bit unusual for me to like more the second book in a series, but as much as I liked Legend it will never compare with this lovely book… Because, you see, Prodigy is simply (and amazingly) good: great characters, strong world building, a lot more action and an amount of suspense that might kill you just a bit. Not to mention some sweet moments that might melt you like ice-cream on a sunny day.

If you read Legend and liked/loved it, you are going to love Prodigy, and if you read Legend and sort of thought it was okay then let me tell you YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE PRODIGY. There is just no way around it, this book is so hard not to love. Its even hard to find a fault in it, because to tell you the truth I think it has none. The moment you think you have everything figured out is the moment you are dead wrong. I thought Prodigy was going to follow this linear plot where the bad guy was widely recognised and he needed to be defeated. Kind of like The Hunger Games in a way. President Snow was powerful and evil, and he really needed to be taken down. But while Prodigy may have started out that way it's linear plot quickly dissipates and you are left with a twist. You start off fighting against the Republic, but much to quick, like June, you begin to question if you should be fighting against the new Elector or supporting him. Prodigy is sure to test the reader's loyalties as much as the characters. Because while June may be changing her mind when it comes to defeating the new elector, Day is nothing if not dead serious about taking the Republic down.

Which is where our romance begins to take hard blows. One of the biggest themes in Prodigy is trust, specially where to place it. Because trusting one movement versus the other can break down nations, as well as relationships. June and Day had a rocky start in Legend, and Prodigy is no different. You can see how much these characters want to trust each other, and how much they depend on one another not only as lovers but as partners. They are each other's crutches in this world full of uncertainty. But realistically they have known each other only for so long, and they have already hurt each other in some ways even if it was involuntary. The way they work their way to each other was definitely a high point in the story and without this inner doubt the story wouldn't have been half as believable and touching.

Every story depends on it's characters. Day and June, they've grown up so much. If they started out as rebellious teenagers they ended up as strong new adults, willing to do anything and take high leaps in faith for not only each other but also for their country. June, in this book she was my favorite. If Legend was more about Day I feel like Prodigy is more about June. It's totally about both of them, both have to overcome huge tests in their lives, but June for me grew up the most. Day as well by the end of the novel.

There's other characters like Anden and Tess who definitely make a come back. I loved who I wasn't supposed to love and hated characters that I previously thought of as endearing. Here is one of my updates while reading Prodigy:
"ITS A FOURSOME!!!! A Four way love affair!! OMGUI@*RY@)(R%*#)~! Not the main reason I am enjoying the book but it certainly makes things interesting (specially since Anden is such a freaking cutie that I think I may be falling for him). But there's a conspiracy here that is making me go all O)*@UHJFUHSN, EXCITING!!"
Just... keep an open mind. Tess is a bit of a bitch this time around though lol At least she seemed like that to me.

Finally, the ending. Oh holy baby raptor Jesus. It was HEART BREAKING. I was left in a puddle of my own tears, wondering if and how things will turn around on Book 3. I am not even sure they can, or if I want them to. It seems like book 3 is going to be very interesting... in 2014. COME ON!! Write a little faster Miss Lu!

All I know is that Legend #3 is BOUND to kick some major ass. I wonder if we are going to go some years into the future, that would be cool. Or if we are just going to pick up weeks, or months after. I hope for the former. I wonder what is going to happen to the Republic, to Anden, to Day, and to June. But most of all I really hope Tess never comes back into the picture. This book's cover is gorgeous.I love the color scheme, and basically just everything about it. (S.H.I.E.L.D. logo, anyone?) It fits the novel's mood so perfectly.

Upon opening this book, I found myself confronted with something awesome: half the text is in blue. I don't know why I love this so much. But how do I get my book printed in colors? You'd think it would be hard to read, but it actually isn't.

Prodigy continues as we see June and Day arriving in Las Vegas so they can track down the Patriot group and help bring the Republic down. However, upon arriving it is announced to the world that Elector Primo is dead, leaving his son Anden to take his place. Everyone in the Patriot group is happy about the death of the Elector because Anden is young and naive, and he will be an easier target to assassinate than the Elector would have been. In order for June and Day to seek refuge with the Patriot group, they want something in return. They want June and Day to help assassinate Anden but June suddenly starts to question everything she is being told. Leaving her questioning like are the Patriots really the good people?

Well, I certainly didn't expect ANY of that! Wow! In my head, I kind of thought I knew where Prodigy would lead us. It seemed like everything was set up a certain way after the events of Legend, but I was so very wrong. It was just so unpredictable! Everything you learnt from the first book is twisted and turned around and it honestly leaves you questioning everything. Who really is the bad guy? Honestly, I couldn't even guess! Marie Lu does create a fascinating read that is so heart-pounding and full of adrenaline, that I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat from nerves and anticipation. Not only that but we do get a total different experience reading this time around because we finally get to see the Patriot's in the act. It's more military based with the fire fighter jets, street bombing, and we see more runners - which I really enjoyed. Everything just comes together so well and it really brings it more to life. I'm so excited to see this book on the big screen - if it ever happens.

Now not only is the story line fantastic but the dual point's of view does not disappoint. They are written perfectly and they complement each other so well. Not once do you get lost in either of the narratives. June and Day are unique and such well rounded characters that it's hard not to love them. Their faced with a lot of tough decisions through out this book - if not, more than before. They seem to have to take everything will a little bit of faith. Everywhere they turn, there seems to be someone there who is using them and it's a shame they can't confide in anyone - other than themselves and possibly even one unlikely ally, which is honestly going blow your mind. And there also a lot of uncertainty about June and Day's relationship which really throws a spanner in the works and then of course, that ending. HOLY SMOKES THAT ENDING!! I felt like screaming "WHY MARIE, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DO THAT TO US?!" No!!! It can't possibly be true....I refused to believe it. It's safe to sending the ending of Prodigy will leave you completely blown away but it will also leave you wanting to pull your hair out. It's that good!

"We're in this together, right?" he whispers. "You and me? You want to be here, yeah?" There's guilt in his questions. "Yes," I reply. "I chose this." Day pulls me close enough for our noses to touch. "I love you."

All in all, there are many things that make Prodigy is a fantastic book and the only way you're going to find out, is by reading it yourself. I urge you to pick up this series because it just becomes even more mind-blowing with each book. (less)

I really wasn’t sure what direction Marie Lu would take in Prodigy, but it’s safe to say I wasn’t expecting to be punched in the gut at the end.

I really didn’t want to start by talking about the ending of this book, but it will not leave me! I had a feeling there had to be something HUGE coming when I was nearing the end, otherwise we probably could’ve wrapped up the series here. Not that everything is resolved, but there is some semblance of progress. I have a very bad feeling that there is no salvation for this particular turn of events. In fact, I’m resigning myself to the realization that my worst fear for this will come to pass. Am I going to hold out for a miracle? Well, of course! I WANT IT BADLY! But I can’t give my heart over to it, because it might kill me. WHY!?!? And that last page!!! I must confess, I cried in the end. That last page was so heart-wrenchingly beautiful.

Ok, now that I’ve gotten that out of my system... *shakes it off*

Prodigy moved at a pretty steady pace. Not once did I feel a lull in this book. It’s intense, edge-of-your-seat action and nail-biting suspense. It felt like everything was in their hands from the moment I cracked the book open.

I thought June had impressed me in Legend ...but that was nothing compared to how much I love that girl after reading Prodigy. While she was still her kick-ass self, in this book she was also so vulnerable. She still can’t express her feelings to Day, but you can see her trying. And maybe that’s why she’s so much better at sniffing out the BS than he is though. She lives by logic and intelligence, where Day is all passion and impulsivity. The question of whether they match very well comes up a few times. Are they perfect for one another? Probably not. But we can’t do much about it once our heart is set on someone.

That was actually one of my biggest frustrations with this story. Day. I love you, Day, but I wanted to slap some sense into you a few times during this book. His uncertainty was killing me!! There were moments with June where he really let me down. And don’t EVEN get me started about Tess. WTF?! Maybe I saw it coming from her...but, again, the uncertainty from Day?! DUDE! No. I was not cool about it. And this is actually funny to me because the synopsis makes it seem as if June might make a misstep. It doesn’t always have to be the girl who messes up, you know. Most of the time, it isn’t. Just sayin’! :P

I was really surprised by some of secondary characters in this book. I’ve already talked a little about how I wasn’t a huge fan of Tess in this book, but there’s one I LOATHED from Legend whose confession surprised me. I won’t give that one away. Then there’s Anden. I really liked him. I liked his personality and his ideals. I like that he’s a ruler who is strong but fair. He just needs a little help with the leading... Surprised by this? Yeah, I KNOW! So was I!

I don’t know how to wrap this up properly, but just know that this series is by far one of the best dystopians out there. And this sequel only elevated the series. No sophomore slump for Marie Lu. Nope!! You guys must read it. Meanwhile, I’ll just wait here with bated breathe until the release of the third book.(less)

Chce se dostat k Patriotům a přesvědčit se, že je o Tess dobře postaráno. A co pak dál? Pokusí se zachránit svého bratra Edena. Oběma je ovšem jasné, že Patriotům nemají co nabídnou.

Tedy kromě svých služeb. A těch hodlají Patrioti využít. Mají v plánu zavraždit nově zvoleného Electora, Andena, a rozpoutat tak celorepublikovou revoluci. Chtějí svrhnout systém a spojit se se zbytkem světa. Hlavně přestat vést válku s Koloniemi a nějak se s nimi domluvit.

Co však vypadá jako jednoduchý úkol, se postupem času ukáže jako závažná otázka, na níž stojí budoucnost Republiky, ale i jich samotných. Ani jeden z nich neví, komu může věřit a kdo si s nimi jen zahrává, přitom sleduje jen své vlastní cíle. Ale nemají jinou možnost. Co ani jeden z nich netuší, je, jak moc je nastálá situace ovlivní a kam až to všechno povede.

Proč jsem knize dala o hvězdičku míň než prvnímu dílu? Protože mě strašně naštvala. Přitom vím, že jinačí vývoj to nejspíš ani nemohlo mít – a to je to, co mě na tom všem neskutečně frustruje a co mě nutí se bát toho, co se odehraje v posledním díle. Oba hlavní hrdiny mám ráda a všechny jejich vzlety i pády jsem prožívala s nimi. Jako bych byla i já součástí tohohle splašeného příběhu.

Líbí se mi, že tentokrát se Marie Lu více pohroužila do samotného pozadí příběhu a vy tak konečně dostanete odpovědi na hromadu otázek, které se objevily při čtení Legendy. A že je na tom vidět, jak hezky to má promyšlené. Bonusem je také to, že to dává smysl a díky různými indiciím dokážete odhalit, kam to nejspíš dál povede. I když ty největší trumfy si autorka stále nechává v rukou, aby je na vás vytáhla v té správné chvíli. A vám tak pak nezbývá nic jiného, než koukat s otevřenou pusou… a nadávat jak dlaždič.

Nechci příliš zacházet do podrobností, abych vám neubrala tu dávku vzrušení a nesnášenlivosti, co vás popadne pokaždé, když se něco začne dít. Kniha má vše v té správné dávce a rozhodně nezklame. Z každičké společné scény June a Daye mi srdce plesalo a nervy mi hrály beatbox. Andena jsem nenáviděla a zároveň mi byl sympatický. Tess mě nehorázně štvala a Kolonie jsem odhadla dobře.

Samotný konec vás nejspíš nechá krvácet a vy budete mít strach z toho, co se bude dít dál. Protože u téhle série to sice vypadá, že víte, co se bude dít dál, ale stejně vás autorka překvapí. Kor po takovémhle konci se může stát cokoliv. A to ani trochu nepřeháním.

Všechny otázky z prvního dílu byly náležitě zodpovězeny. Akce střídají myšlenky hlavních hrdinů a jejich nejistota jak ve velkém světě venku, tak i v nich samých... Překvapení za překvapením, zrada a smrt a ten konec! Kruciš, naprosto netuším, co si pro mě Marie Lu přichystá v posledním dílu. Protože tady je možné úplně všechno...(less)
