Mad by Guy de Maupassant

Am I mad? This is an interesting debut to a story. The narrator is in love, which Charlie aka Jack Nicholson in Prizzi’s Honor says “is only temporary”.
The hero of Mad is jealous and suffers for it, enough to consider his crime justified. The woman he loves seems to have grown tired of him, at least in his imagination. “A rapid fire is consuming “the mad man.
“Leave me alone „she says.

Heard on audiobook. This is a very disturbing, and creepy tale. You can almost follow his madness as he is obsessed with his wife and her love of horseback riding. The dark ending was a nice surprise for the horror fan in me, and truly makes you wonder who's really mad.

A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels.
