Captain Alexander Outland of the Sixty-Nine (short for Space Vessel 3369, of course) is the best pilot in the galaxy. He’s also a pirate, a smuggler, and loved and loathed by women in umpteen solar systems. His crew of strays and misfits includes an engineer of dubious sanity, a deposed planetary governor, an annoyingly unflappable Sexbot copilot, and a slinky weapons chie...more

Captain Alexander Outland, Nap to his friends, is the best pilot in the galaxy. He is also some kind of pirate, smuggler, and a big womanizer. He just loves them all. And that is the part that gets him into trouble time and again. If only Slinky, his gorgeous weapons officer, would give him the time of day, he would gladly give them all up for her. But of course, she doesn’t believe he will change his ways for her.
While on a legitimate mission to obtain a shipload of magma, they have to flee th...more

This book actually reminded me a lot of the old (and also not very good) cartoon on the Sci-Fi channel "Tripping the Rift". A lecherous captain, an almost pathologically competent sexbot, and a stream of consciousness style of dialogue from a consciousness that only knows sarcasm and pornography.

The book isn't actually all bad. The dialogue goes a long way toward making the crew feel like an incredibly dysfunctional family, which is exactly what they are. It actually feels like the kind of stuff...more

In reading this book, in many ways it reminded me of pulp science fiction that was written during the 1940s. The story is told from a first person perspective, that being Captain Alexander Napoleon Outland of the space ship Sixty-Nine (an abbreviation of the full name), a character obviously rather enamoured with themselves, a womaniser of the first order, and supposedly the best pilot in the galaxy. The story is very much tongue in cheek, and while the title character chooses to portray themsel...more

Captain Alexander Napoleon Outland can’t seem to get a break. Along with his crew, he’s out to score some magma when a pirate armada tries to shanghai his ship, the Sixty-Nine. Yes, his ship really is called the Sixty-Nine. Trust me, as you get to know Nap better, this will not surprise you one bit. Forced to land on a planet known for its military and distinct lack in the sense of humor department, Nap and crew find thems...more

Alexander Napoleon Outland, Nap for short, is a riot. Excuse me while I take a huge step back from this book and convulse with laughter.

It was so so funny and silly and full of action and comic relief, - a much needed book for the upcoming winter months. If you love Han Solo and Serenity, this is a must read.

In short, Nap and his team of misfits (did I mention that his ship is called Sixty-Nine? *snort*) are flying through space on one of the few legitimate orders he's taken, when an invisi...more

I picked this up on a whim because of it's cover. I opened it up because it looked intriquing. I read the first chapter (2 pages) and was hooked. It's a firefly-like setting in that there is a captain and a crew with a similiar make up to our old fav. They are pirates...or aquirer's of other peoples wealth who occasionally do legal things to earn money and keep ahead of the law. From there, the book takes on it's own persona.

The story revolves around the crew trying to find magma on a legal job....more

Don't get me wrong, Koch is no Douglas Adams, but this is a likeable, amusing sci-fi story which takes the idea of a character like Han Solo and runs with it. Personally, I'd ship out with Captain Outland over Solo any day, he's got the better crew and gets into funnier situations.

Essentially, Alexander Napoleon Outland is a rogue with a woman in every spaceport (usually several women in each one), despite the fact that the one he really wants is his weapons and security officer. She's called "S...more

Alexander Napoleon Outland, Nap to his friends, is a spaceship captain, pirate, smuggler, lover and the best pilot in the galaxy. His crew consists of mysterious and sexy Weapons Chief Slinkie, mechanical genius Chief Mechanic Randolph, deposed politician and undercover criminal mastermind The Governor, and Randolph’s creation and android girlfriend Audrey. When Nap and the crew run into a pirate armada and are able to outwit and evade it to land on Herion, a military run planet, they realize th...more

Just as a warning to others, the entire book is a constant string of one-liner sarcastic jokes and insults. There actually is a plot, of dubious quality, and decent writting overall but after a couple hundred pages of joke and insult after joke and insult it just got too tedious for me to continue reading.

It isn't satirical, there is no attempt to be funny beyond the one-liners, and the actual storyline is very small scale. If none of that bothers you and you can read an entire chapter where no...more

Fun, easy to read; good for taking a break between long-winded series.

Ok, this is more like 4.5 stars. It's not perfect. The main character is so un-PC that as your starting the book you don't know whether you should be laughing or grimacing. The main character is a perv but he's good natured about it. Holy Moly, I haven't grinned and giggled so much through a book ever. Every page was hilarious to me. This is Spaceballs on crack...or crap. The author's other series has some of the same humour but has a lot more restraint. The restraints are broken in this book an...more

This is not really a bad book…but it is not a very good one either. I learned later that the author, G. J. Koch, apparently also write under the name Gini Koch which means that it is the same author that have written the Katherine “Kitty” Katt series. If I had known that it was the same author I might actually not had bought the book in the first place. Touched by an Alien, the first one in that series, was definitely not to my liking. Actually that is one of the few books that I have read that...more

OMG!!! I loved this story!!! I am so in love with Alexander Napoleon Outland aka Nap, or as he likes to call himself ‘The Outland’. Nap is to die for funny, witty, sexy and an all around good guy. There is n...more

Something just did not work for me as it should have with this book. I really tried to like it, I mean I love her other books, but here, no, I just couldn't fall helplessly in love with it.

Captain Alexander Outland..a pig really. Sure I like a good rake, but this guy, well it just felt like he would have picked up a few things on the way. Can’t say I loved Slinkie either, the woman he is lusting after. Though I really liked how she did not fall for his crap. And I did like that Alexander did do...more

Alexander pulls Sixty-Nine into Thurge for a magma order, but when he hears the voice and one of the women that has been brewing to see Nap again, he high-tales it out of there to Herion. But in his rush to avoid one trouble he comes barreling into another. Ships have been vanishing around Herion space along with weird occurrences. Alarms in Sixty-Nine go off, but nothing is on the screen. Nap works his flying magic to land on Herion. Now grounde...more

I picked this book up because it looked like a spook/parody of Firefly, a show I absolutely love. However, the book fell flat...hard. I couldn't finish this book. The writing was so-so, the characters were grating, the dialogue was terrible, and the plot was ok. Another Goodreads member stated this in their review of the book, and I have to agree with them, but the constant quips in what felt like every line got very tiring, very quickly. It's great to have a punch line and a joke at the right m...more

This book read like a comic offspring of the Ketty Jay books and Firefly, albeit nowhere near as well written. There's a lot of action, snappy dialogue, plays on tropes, and genuinely funny moments. However, most of it gets recycled and overdone to the point that I wanted to be put out of my misery. I liked the idea, but the execution not so much.

I still gave the book a fairly high rating because I know there are others who would probably enjoy this quite a bit.

A decent adventure, similar to something I might have seen on Firefly if it had survived past the first season. The biggest drawback is the title character, who happens to be the narrator as well. The first introduction to Alexander Outland does not make a good impression. In fact, it created a very bad impression for me. It did not help that he seems to relish being an arrogant, womanizing criminal jackass. With this clouded first impression, it becomes harder to accept him as a hero, or even a...more

This book was a quick, fun read. It seemed to be a spin off of the classic Firefly TV series but with Koch's unique sense of humor added. While I can see a few similarities to the tv show especially when it comes to some of the characters, the book has its own unique plot. It was delightful although a bit crude if that is something that bothers you. I can't wait to see what happens next! Please say there will be another book!

Extremely short chapters, an ending that is more WTF than anything and the bare bones of characterization, it reads more like a attempt at a script than a story.

Outland is an space adventure mixed with humor. A crew of misfits make the characters unique and makes me want me of this series. This book reminded me of the Firefly crew, but they are different. You can't go wrong when you have a sexbot on board.

Great space romp full of humor and adventure. Beware of drinking while reading it: may cause severe spewing in several places!

This was just a fun book start to finish. Not high art, but high enjoyment! Hopefully this is just the first in a series.

This is a very entertaining and quick paced read. Full of action and witty barbs, Koch does a great job whipping out dialog between characters in playful ways. They also whip out other things, but...we won't go there :)

This is a fairly light tale, with a large dose of humour. The characters are likeable, and the hero follows in the fine sci-fi tradition of likeable rogues, such as the Stainless Steel Rat. The story is reasonably well-written, and flows at a good pace, but the plot does throw up the occasional surprise, although they are usually pretty well telegraphed. The book doesn't end on a cliff-hanger, but I can certainly see further stories being written in this series.

This was a lot of fun. Very Firefly in feel. Maybe a little too juvenile at times, but a very fun read overall. Would definitely check out a sequel
Liana Brooks
Not bad, but I think there could have been more world-building. This read like a Pulp Sci-fi dime store novel. Silly, and campy, with a few laugh-out-loud moments but with no real depth. Compared to her other books the world wasn't as vivid, but the character isn't like Kitty Kat either, so it might just be a personality difference.

Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone who likes the classic dime store fiction, fans of Firefly, and people who don't take their military SF too seriously. If you're...more

I picked it up because someone told me it was like Firefly in book form. It did not disappoint.

Can I just say I didn't love this as much as I love the Kitty books but I quite enjoyed it. Gini is one of those authors you either love or hate and I am firmly in the love camp.

Saying that, whilst I can appreciate "the Outland" especially if I was in dire need, please don't let him hit on me. Ewwww.

The rest of the cast was good, each having their own quirks and foibles and I want an Audrey who comes with her own vaccuum cleaner :)

I'm assuming there is a sequel in the works and I'll be very happ...more
