Ordinary, Ordinary, An Ode To The Ordinary

I've read a couple of great books lately
So maybe that's why I feel this way
This book, like the first one, had me almost asleep
So I really can't say that it was more than okay

I almost want to say that the book didn't get a fair chance because I've just read some awesome books but a book should be able to engage me no matter what and this book didn't do that.

He crosses paths with Dale, an ex-SEAL, now working for Sanctuary, an organisation that provides protection to witnesses and victims of crime.

There is a good amount of back story on the two MC's and the action scenes are written well. The heroes don't actually meet until 50% into the story and in a novella sized book...more

Well, I'm torn!

Plot-wise I liked this book much better, than its prequel, I've been so engrossed in the story during the first part, I almost didn't notice that there's still no romantic development whatsoever (although I always prefer romance driven books).

But! When the romance started, unfortunately I didn't like it at all. More specifically I didn't like Joseph and his interactions with Nik, Morgan and Dale. I liked him as an individual character at first, but then he started being so Mary S...more Well, I'm torn!

But! When the romance started, unfortunately I didn't like it at all. More specifically I didn't like Joseph and his interactions with Nik, Morgan and Dale. I liked him as an individual character at first, but then he started being so Mary Sue. He was better than everyone in everything. He beat Dale in combat, he immediately knew how to get to the Bullen's house, he was better in climbing the mountains, his super-mega team found all the intel in seconds, while Sanctuary guys worked on it for weeks or even months. I didn't even know why he needed them as they all looked like a little kids, compared to Joseph? He could as well do it all alone. He was all condescending attitude and I don't like it at all. More than that it was hard for me to even sympathize with his revenge quest, since he himself had said several times, that he didn't even know Elisabeth all that well, so he wasn't heartbroken, that was just some kind of samurai code for him - to avenge her death. To me Morgan looked ten times more sincere in his willing to find out the truth and to bring the closure to this story. And when Nik asked Joseph to at least think about others, while doing something, Joseph couldn't even promise him that, and what good would've done all that avenging, if that harmed innocent people as a result?

And I couldn't understand where the mutual sympathy between Joseph and Dale came from? They were fighting and kicking each other asses and suddenly Dale was like: oh, he's hot. Although ten minutes ago he'd all but hated his guts. WTF??? And Joseph acted just like he hadn't had sex in months and Dale's gay, so why not? I didn't see any more than that, so all that 'oh I found someone I like' appeared out of the blue to me. There was zero relationship development and very crammed ending, imo. And I wanted to see more equality in the relationship, since Dale was positioned as an alpha male as well, I'd like for him to have the upper hand sometimes, to be able to save Joseph, to help him big time, not to be forever second.

So relationship-wise the things I liked the most here were the glimpses of Nik and Morgan and their sweet relationship. Unfortunately the main pairing didn't do anything for me.

But I love the 'verse and definitely will buy the next book from these series.(less)

I normally just give my DNFs a one star; they're DNFs for a reason, after all. But this wasn't actually poorly written. It just grated on my nerves and reading the other reviews didn't convince me to finish.

It's a mostly minor irritation, actually, but the SEAL worship is over the top here. The way RJ Scott writes them, Navy SEALs are like unicorns. Unicorns that can kill you, that is. With a single glance. Not even a glance. A half glance. They're just epic and awesome, you know? Too cool. OMG....more

I wanted to like this book but didn’t. I just can’t get behind a book when I don’t like the MCs. Period. I really liked Dale from Guarding Morgan and was excited to read his story until R.J. Scott proceeded to turn the yummy alpha Dale into a pansy. She took a totally respectable former SEAL and turned him into an “old” (at 29???), out-of-shape, wannabe who lusts after Joseph. Most of the book is spent on trying to solve Joseph’s sister’s murder and that was semi-entertaining. But there was little or no development of any type of friendship or camaraderie between Dale and Joseph along the way. Then, about ¾ of the way in ... BAM! ... they suddenly hook up. It’s little more than two guys passing the time by getting each other off in the woods. Bleh! Sorry, but that is soooo not romantic to me.

There was simply zero chemistry between Dale and Joseph (other than lust), so it’s not surprising this turned out to be a disappointing read for me. I was often frustrated with the characters and the story. The cherry on top? The rescue operation to save Robert and the show down with the Bowens. The tap dance R.J. Scott did to avoid Joseph being construed as a “Christian Harris” bordered on asinine. I mean, Joseph – a Navy effing SEAL, for f*ck’s sake – did everything humanly possible to avoid shooting or even hurting the two murderous Bowen bastards but didn’t blink when he pulled the trigger to shoot a very injured friendly??? Okay … um, that’s BULL SH*T! No freaking SEAL would do that. Then Joseph unceremoniously dumps Dale and an unconscious Robert at the hospital and digs out in the “Lambo.” Yuck. Seriously. Gimme a break. I’m supposed to believe that’s “heroic?” I. Don’t. Think. So. In an effort to downplay what Joseph did, even the “doctor” described Robert’s bullet wound as “nothing.” Bleh.

I feel like every idiotic trick in the book was thrown in at the end in a sad and misguided effort to wrap this story up nicely. It failed miserably IMHO. This story is so far-fetched and the characters so one-dimensional that not only did I not buy it, it was a sorely frustrating read. For me, this book had great potential but fell way short of the mark.(less)

This was a fast-paced, gripping read with lots of action, of the fighting as well as of the man-on-man kind ;-)
Though the premise of Joseph investigating on his own required some suspension of disbelief, particularly on the part of his helpful intelligence team in the background. I also found the blurb a little misleading, as I thought Dale didn't quite qualify as an ex SEAL, having quit after the horrendous events on his very first mission. Likely a matter of definition. As a character, I liked Dale a lot, his bouts of temper and his struggle for self-control, his stubbornness, his self-doubts and his resilience. Joseph, confident, determined, passionate and cold-blooded in one, was Dale's perfect match. I could truly see those two men bring out the worst and the best in each other, and I could see them forging a real commitment, let alone the sparks that flew between them almost right from the beginning. Adversaries-to-lovers happens to be a favorite of mine, and the change from instant dislike to reluctant respect, grudging mutual appreciation, affection and finally love was beautifully exercised here.

The secondary cast was well-drawn too, particularly Morgan and Nik, the leads from Book 1. I liked the relationship dynamics between them, and although Morgan didn't quite fit in among the strong, mean, taciturn testosterone-bombers that apparently make up the majority of Sanctuary's staff, I could see his role and why Nik would fall for him, why Dale would feel protective towards him. And Sanctuary's campy computer geek was a breath of fresh air!

So while the characterizations as well as the romance worked very well for me, the actual mystery didn't, not really. Too many improbabilities were conveniently wiped away, including a totaled 300.000 $ Lamborghini and a hiking path that leads past the backyard of a highly guarded mobster's compound. The mystery around Elisabeth's dead wasn't solved yet in the end either, not really. Although the actual killer had been known since book one, (Guarding Morgan) his motives remained obscure. Who's pulling the strings in the background is also quite obvious by now, though there's still room for more investigation, as befitting a book that's part of a series.
By the way, unlike many series, The Only Easy Day doesn't suffer from "middle book syndrome", by which I mean a book that's only there to knit some loose threads together and let others hang but doesn't have a proper story on its own. This book tells a fairly well wrought story in its own right; originally, I read it as a standalone, and although I didn't have all the information, there was enough so I could follow the general storyline. Thus I can recommend it as a solitary read as well as a part of this entertaining, enjoyable series.

If you are looking for a very good suspense story, this is highly recommended.
Although, if you are looking for a great M/M love story..I'm afraid this is definitely not the one for you.

I enjoyed this more than the first one. Less sex and more action. Kinda surprised I'm happy about that. I liked Dale and Joseph and how they were both dominant SEALs and how the story carried over from the first book. But the end? I'm not into instant love and wtf. Joseph has to leave and it ends. Hopefully their story carries on in the next book.

Second installment in the Sanctuary series and the stepbrother of the murdered girl is back in town. This is an excellent series - RJ is an amazing writer with so much range between YA of the "Love is" series or "The Decisions we Make", fantasy of the Fire trilogy, cowboys in Heart of Texas, paranormal with Shades of the Wolf with Diane Adams as well as one of my favorites, a contemporary holiday book, The Christmas Throwaway.
This series, if you like action/adventure, suspense/mystery, as well as romance, in this case, hot alpha male, you will probably enjoy this series!

I found this book more enjoyable than the first book in the series and actually finished reading the story in ~3hrs. I was a bit dissatisfied with how it went with Dale and Joseph and I hope they show up more in the future books. The plot was okay, readers get to read about Joseph being hell bent on finding out why his step-sister was murdered.

Joseph came off pretty arrogant to me and I wasn't sure I wanted him making the moves on Dale...it turned out well though and it was interesting...more

This book has thriller, mystery, and a high-tension character study all balled into one, and kept me on the edge of my seat. The links to Guarding Morgan, the first book in the series, were fascinating, and the overarching mystery as to why Elisabeth was killed moved a little closer to being solved. Joseph and Dale were very easy characters to get into. I loved both personalities and they had a lot of chemistry. They started out as sort of enemies and it grew into lust, and eventually love. Normally, I like a few more intimate moments in a book, this had a smaller amount of that, but I didn't care. Maybe my reasoning for that is I really got into the couple and just wanted them to do something. It would have been funny to watch me reading these two, I was on edge.

In the first book we found out Morgan saw the death of a woman. Joseph was that woman's step-brother and he wanted to find out what happened. So the story starts with him coming home from a mission. Joseph is a SEAL, and Dale an ex-SEAL. He tracks down Morgan after Dale, Nik and Morgan set him up so they could meet. We then get into the whole Bullen saga and it gets somewhat complicated, but I found it easy to follow along.

The book had some hot moments and very frustrating ones. I loved the sexual tension in this one, it oozed passion and heat. I wanted one of the characters to just rip the others clothes off. I was getting frustrated (in a good way) waiting for someone to kiss and when they did finally kiss, it was short and perfect. The sex was sappier than a lot of people would have believed and I loved the mixture of passion and sap.

I really can't say enough about how much I really did enjoy this book. We will be getting a sequel to it and it's needed. The way we were left with these two had me screaming at the top of my lungs NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO But that might just be me! Yeah, I'm willing to admit, I get too invested in my books and couples.

Dale MacIntyre, ex-Navy Seal, now works for Sanctuary, a private organization that investigates crimes and protects the victims of those crimes. Where the CIA, FBI, and all the other government "alphabets" have failed, the Sanctuary and its agents step in. MacIntyre's current case involves protecting Morgan Drake, witness to the murder of Elisabeth Costain. He is also the lover of Nik, fellow Sanctuary operative. When word gets to MacIntyre that a Navy Seal hellbent on revenge is headed their way, he is sure that their case has just exploded, their mission in danger of exposure.

The two men clash immediately, each convinced theirs is the only way to bring down the criminals and solve the reason behind the murder. MacIntyre and Kinnon are forced to work closely together as connections to the Mafia, local Police and even Congress are revealed the deeper they investigate. Kinnon, MacIntyre and his Sanctuary team must race to mount a rescue when an inside informant is uncovered and tortured. Can they put aside their differences and growing attraction long enough to battle the odds against them and reach the truth? Or will the criminals win?

What a great story! It has everything you could want in a action/adventure novel. Danger, murder, sexual heat, and intrigue as well as a monumental clash of personalities. Joseph Kinnon is absolutely realistic as a Navy Seal. He is patriotic, intense, beyond capable, and lonely. Dale MacIntyre is another wonderful creation. Haunted by a tragic event in his past, MacIntyre too is lonely, mistrustful, and envious of his colleagues who have found lasting relationships. When these two alphas meet, the sexual tension and testosterone leap from the pages. I found it totally believable that the men couldn't decide whether to pound or kiss other other as they slammed into the wall the next time they met. If I hadn't known better, I would have thought the author had a Navy background so well researched are the descriptions of the Seals and their training without it being an "information dump". From start to finish, R. J. Scott does a excellent job of keeping the reader engaged as the two men juggle their professional and emotional needs. I loved Kinnon and MacIntyre and clearly a sequel to this book is on its way. The ending is realistic and, as in true life, not all involved have been brought to justice.

The Only Easy Day is a continuation of the Sanctuary series started with Guarding Morgan. I have not read that one yet( note: I have since read the first in the series, please see my review), but you don't need to in order to love this book. It is Joseph Kinnon and Dale MacIntyre that have me hooked. And it is my hopes for their future that will keep me coming back for more. I loved this and hope you will too.

I'm not going to post a long winded review this time, just something that gets straight to the point ;) I loved this and I'm really enjoying the Sanctuary series! I love all of R.J's work, and this was no exception. The Only Easy Day was just the right length and a thoroughly enjoyable read. The characters were wonderfully crafted and the story flowed nicely. I know I say it so often about the books I love, but I honestly didn't want it to end! I'm really looking forward to reading more by RJ :)

I really like Scott's Sanctuary series so far...

Really well written, the suspense and mystery is great, and I enjoyed the involvement with characters from the first book.
There wasn't much romance....considering their jobs though, I think the involvement and outcome is realistic. More of a Happy-for-Now ending...
I'm hoping that I'll get an update on them in the next book and they will get their deserved Happily-Ever-After in the end.

Ok - stupid ipad ate my review, so this is the second try:

I really liked the first book and started with this one right away. After finishing it in one sitting I have to say, the suspense part of the story works very well and is the reason for me to now start the third book. This is the second book in a series. I happened to read this book out of order. The Only Easy Day is a great standalone book.
