Rachel Miller thought her next job was a run-of-the-mill haunting. As a member of the Order of Rescue Mediums it's her duty to release trapped spirits from the earthly realm. But when called to client Sylvia Elkeles's house, she finds a wraith who doesn't act like he should.

The Order considers the wraith an extreme threat and Rachel may be forced to use a barbaric ritual t...more

The Stubborn Dead drops us right into the action as protagonist Rachel Miller attempts to release a spirit from the Earth realm. The entity appears to be a woman and she violently resists Rachel's plea for her to crossover. Rachel draws upon symbols on her arms calling forth spirits that help her trap the entity. Despite its violence, she asks the spirits to be gentle. Rachel is thrust against a wall, as the spirits wrap themselves around the female entity. One of them lingers back and Rachel ye...more

"The Stubborn Dead" turned out to be a fun supernatural/urban fantasy read for me, probably far more than I anticipated for a brief read. In this novella, Rachel Miller is a rescue medium whose assigned to a case that gives her more than she bargained for. Recruited by Slyvia Elkeles, Rachel thinks she's arriving to exorcise a regular spirit, but turns out facing a rare creature called a rodach, whose origins are unknown. Not only that, if she can't manage to rid of it properly within 48 hours,...more

Rachel Miller is a ‘Rescue Medium’ working for the Order of Rescue Mediums, who sends aggressive, disembodied spirits back to where they belong with the use of her tattooed sigils that hold the power of 5 presences who help transfer the spirit from this plane. It’s dangerous, she is always being attacked and knocked about but someone has to do it. When she receives a phone call from a new client about one particularly aggressive wraith her life is turned upside down and her power is tested as...more

The Stubborn Dead by Natasha Hoar is every bit as good as the teaser in the January print RT Book Reviews claimed it to be. At just under 60 pages, the whole book is a teaser, and a damn fine one.

Rachel Miller is the resident member of the Order of Rescue Mediums in Vancouver. Her duty is to release trapped spirits from this earthly realm. Not all spirits want to be released, and sometimes Rachel has a supernatural fight on her hands. Occasionally, that fight manifests physically, and the spirit...more

Very short read but had a lot packed in such a small story. It was alright. It kept reminding me of Shade by Jeri Smith Ready with the way that wraiths were known to react. I liked Shade much better than this one though because of the additional back story and world building included in the longer novel. I think I would have enjoyed this one more if it would have been a lot more fleshed out.

Rescue Medium, Rachel Miller takes an 'easy' job to rid a house of a wraith only to find it is no ordinary restless spirit. Facing banishment if she fails, Rachel must not only deal with a dangerous spirit, but also a less than truthful client and a Fae mob boss that has some very personal interest in the outcome.

First, let me say that if this novella is a springboard for a longer sequel, it worked. There is enough creativity in this universe that I would definitely read a longer story with the...more

This is one of those entertaining and actionfilled stories. But man, was it short! I didn't realize it until I was finished and expected to see what happens with Kit and Rachel (you know, some roooomance!), and OOPS!, it ended! Which was sad, since I was really getting into the story :/

And since it was so short, there really wasn't any time for any character development or even to get deeper with the plot. Which really wa...more

*** Thanks to NetGalley and Carina Press for providing the ARC for review purposes ***

The story kicked off with Rachel exorcising a stubborn ghost using her 'powers'. At the end of that exorcism, she is called for another ghost busting. That is where our main plot starts. Rachel gets stuck up with a wraith, who doesn't know who he is, which is essential for exorcism. Rachel soon learns that she has been set up..and her options are very limited, where she can lose either her job or her life.

This was such a fun read! I wasn't sure what to expect and really didn't expect a whole lot of action in a short story but I was wrong, this story was chocked full of action and mystery and just down right good ghostly fun.

This was a fabulous prequel. I really enjoyed reading about Rachel and the Order, Kit and Janus and well as the evil Mr. Grey and of course no one could forget the wraiths. I am so intrigued with exactly what powers or abilities Rachel may have that she doesn't know about. Why...more

The Stubborn Head is a nice little novella, coming in at 20,000 words. The basic story is staightforward: Rachel works as the regional representative for the Order of Rescue Mediums in Vancouver. (Woo, Canadian setting!) The Order has strict rules about engaging spirits: once you start, you can't stop or fail, or you're out. And not just out but shunned and erased, with your powers restricted, so the stakes are pretty high when Rachel confronts a wraith that behaves atypically.

I really like the...more

I found out about The Stubborn Dead when Kimba sent it as a recommendation on Goodreads. It’s a novella, roughly 70 pages long, so it’s a very quick read. You know that saying “good things come in small packages.” Yeah, that definitely applies to this book.

Rachel is a rescue medium for The Order, which means she helps ghosts and such move on whether they want to or not. Believe me, they aren’t always willing. Rachel is a tough cookie, though, so she can take a little roughing up by a spirit. How...more

This was a short, but brilliant, novella that I ultimately fell in love with from the very first page. It was a good starting novel to what could be a very interesting and fascinating new series. It was a nice, easy read that was entertaining and welcoming and one book that I simply found difficult to put down. I enjoyed reading the journey that the main protagonist took and am extremely excited to wait for the next instalment to find out exactly what is in store for her!

The characters in this n...more

From the moment I started The Stubborn Dead I was thrown straight into the action, in the middle of an exorcism and it just continues from there. There is never a dull moment while reading The Stubborn Dead, and although it is a short read it doesn't lack in it storytelling.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Rachel Miller and her abilities and how she uses them but most of all loved how they have their own little society and that they even have their own rules, the one being called into use duri...more

Bite-sized Review
The Stubborn Dead was an intriguing debut. While it was a bit short for the amount of content it had, I definitely want to read more of this series.

King-sized Review
The Supernatural reference in the dedication set the perfect tone for this novella. There were definite similarities, though easily enough differences to make The Stubborn Dead clearly its own entity, and fans of the TV show will probably enjoy this story.

Rachel has the potential to be quite an interesting character....more

Short but Substantial Series Debut
Hindsight being what it is, Rachel Miller should have climbed right back on her motorcycle and ridden away as soon as she saw...and felt...the charming house she'd been called to clear of a dangerous spirit. The waves of rage and pain that emanate from the house jar every cell in her body. She had dealt with aggressive spirits before, though, and had plenty of experience in her job with the Order of Rescue Mediums. A wraith is nasty, but doable. Metaphysically s...more

The Stubborn Dead is an enjoyable short novella about Rachel Miller, a ghost buster who wouldn’t like me to call her that. Her correct title is a Rescue Medium. She’s good at her job, which entails releasing trapped spirits from the earthly realm, but in The Stubborn Dead, she meets a challenge – a dangerous wraith who doesn't act like he should.

Sylvia Elkeles, the client who engaged Rachel’s services is obviously hiding something and it may be something that could tip the scales between life an...more

My Thoughts: I bought this book after reading The Ravenous Dead. Natasha Hoar somehow sucked me into this world of wraiths and reapers where her heroine, Rachel Miller, must kick ass to save everyone from the monsters.

Rachel Miller is a Rescue Medium. That means she can see ghosts, talk to them, fight them, and send them to the other side. She has a handy-dandy weapon for dealing with ghostly monsters-- her tattoo. It charges with energy, and once fully charged,...more

ARC from Carina Press on NetGalley

I didn't realize initially that this was a novella. It really could have been a full-length story, and although I liked it a lot I definitely would have had a stronger connection with the characters if it was longer.

Ms. Hoar dives right in and starts the book with Rachel trying to exorcize or "Send Home" a ghost. I always appreciate jumping right into the action, and this scene allowed for the reader to learn a lot of Rachel's job without it being an info dump....more

I know what I read is an ARC, but I’m wondering if the formatting is going to be edited since it doesn’t look right.

This is the first book to the Lost Souls series by Natasha Hoar, it seems like a good start to a great series. I can’t wait for the next one, but since this book isn’t going to be released until the 23rd, then I have a long way to wait until book...more

Actually a 3.5 rating.

This was a short story of only 20,000 words but it was complete and full in and of itself. You never got the sense that anything was abbreviated. There was a full cast of characters that were nicely developed. The plot was well paced and Rachel was nicely fleshed out.

Rachel is a hard nosed, motorcycle riding Rescue Medium. She’s conned into dispatching a wraith that is unusual in its behavior. She might have to go to extreme measures to dispatch it. You can see her wrestlin...more

Bite-sized but full of fun.

A ghost story with attitude. Aggressive spirits are Rachel Miller's bread and butter. As a rescue medium, it's her job to send them on their way, no matter how reluctant they are to leave. Wraiths, on the other hand, are a different matter. Faster, stronger and a whole lot angrier.

I enjoyed this, but it was so very short! I've been to look up more information on the series to see if this is a prequel or something, and found a curious thing: It's not a prequel, it's th...more

It's too short!!! Ahem.

Rated 3.5 Stars

Lately, due to one reason or another, I've been reading a lot of (something)-romance books & shorts. When I read the synopsis for this one, I thought, "Oh! Seems like an interesting PNR."

YAY to being to being wrong, surprised and finding another author to follow!

The Stubborn Dead title is somewhat misleading but not completely off the mark. Rachel Miller is a Rescue Medium that helps release spirits that are trapped on earth. She takes...more

This is a novella and I have to say that this story made me want more, needless to say I kind of felt a little cheated.

The story begins with Rachel Miller, who is a member of the Order of Rescue Medium has been called to Sylvia Elkeles’s house to help a wraith pass over. Instead of this being a normal job, the wraith is acting peculiar and does not comprehend what is happening. Rachel is taken aback by the wraith actions and sets forth find out what has happened to this entity. This sends Rache...more

I quite liked this rather short novel - though I'm more inclined to think of it as a novella than a true novel. One of the things I liked about it is that it's set in Vancouver! Hello, local author! The pace is brisk and the narrative well seasoned with action and dialogue and the hint of romance goes over well. So yeah, I really liked how it began and ended without traipsing over to the side and going on tangents that detract from the narrative rather than adding to it.

The only problem I had wi...more

This is book 1 in the Lost Souls series and I really enjoyed it. As usual, Carina Press are bringing some really good authors into the light. Natasha Hoar's writing style and characters are enjoyable, she manages to make you keep turning pages. A sign of a good author for me, is when I don't want to put the book down, even thought I know I have to go to sleep since I'm working early the next morning. Natasha Hoar managed this.

Rachel is an intriguing character, as is her job, I'm looking forward...more

When rescue medium Rachel Miller is called in to take care of a wraith, she finds herself mixed up in intrigues and an attempt on her life, faced with a wraith who defies everything she knows about the spirit world.

The Stubborn Dead was a fast-paced, interesting novella that I really wish had been a novel instead. There's so much going on but it's crammed into about 20,000 words. The length of the story cut down on the depth; there's so much backstory and worldbuilding here that we never get to...more

Liked this little story, she's something similar to Anita Blake (a mix between a necromancer and a witch) but not so bitchy and has to save a soul from going completely rogue. The novel has rhythm and is well written. Looking forward the 2nd book!

Rach...more

Stubborn Dead is a novella and I feel its meant for longer book. That their is a back story I don't know.

Rachel Miller is a member of the Order of Rescue Mediums Their job is release trapped spirits. Their are a bunch of rules they have about what they must do or what they should not do.

Rachel is called out on a job and things go wrong. It is not the usual spirits that is haunting the house. The ownner won't tell her whats going on. Rachel is being set up for somthing. Thier is some group...more

Go read this novella! Seriously, anyone going around saying paranormal romance is dying, there's nothing fresh, should be smacked with this story. It's intense, fast-paced, fantastic (in every sense) and I could have stayed in the world Natasha Hoar created all day.

Do you remember the first time you read "Cry Wolf" by Patricia Briggs and that novella just hooked you forever on Anna and Charles's story? "The Stubborn Dead" is exactly like that.

No smexy bits in this story...not even a kiss! Wah!....more

Born in South Africa, Natasha moved to Canada in her 20s and settled just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia. This meant she was surrounded by an abundance of amazing natural beauty, interesting people from around the world to talk to and a fair bit of rain (which, oddly enough, she rather enjoys). She’s always up for a good adventure, especially if it involves ‘stumbling upon’ movie or TV sho...more
