Wow! There are no words right now that could possibly explain how amazing this book is. It deserves way more than 5 stars.

Chase is caught in the midst of a supernatural war. Trying to come to terms with his magic he must find a way to stop his father from bringing back the evil God, Ithereal. But will he be able to stop such powerful magic when he can barely control his own?

When I received the first book from Matthew for review I instantly fell in love with his writing an...more

In case you missed my glowing review of Exiled (the first book in The Protector Series), let me quickly fill you in: it blew me away. There is no other self published YA series out there that would be better. Most of them don't even come close to being so insanely F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. If you haven't read it yet, GET ON IT. Seriously, don't make me tell you again!

Now, onto my review of Shift.

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Matt Merrick and his books. After read...more

Attention: MR Merrick has done it again.

What's "IT", you ask? The "IT" to which I am referring is the fact the he has written another action-packed, exhilarating, tension-riddled monster of a book!

Main character Chase Williams is still reeling over the tragic event that marked the end of Exiled, book one in The Protector series. He is grief-stricken and bound by guilt, and most certainly not in a happy place at the opening of Shift. But even the loss he has experienced and the continuous revelat...more

This novel hits the ground running and doesn’t let up until the very end. Packed with lots of action and another amazing storyline, Merrick’s sequel to Exiled is a thrill ride for readers of all ages. I was sucked into the pages as Merrick continues the story of Chase, Rayna, and Willy as they attempt to adjust to the many changes around them. Picking up a few weeks after the conclusion of the first novel, Merrick drops the reader right into the middle of the action as Rayna fights for her life...more

Oh my god!
I love this series so damn much! i have read these books over and over again. They are just so good!
The story starts from the last one which is good! I love all the magic and how chase gets all 4! Rai is awesome! And Marcus is so sweet! I love how Rayna and Chase's relationship isn't taken to the next level until the end! I feel the book developed and just got better as it continued. Rayna's Werecat is awesome! She's always been kinda feisty! Although Vincent is cocky his sarcasm and...more

To say this book is incredibly amazing is an understatement. This book was so absolutely beyond amazing, that there are no words to describe it! I have made a few attempts at this review actually, and the first few were just incoherent babbling about my love for it. So now I will do a composed review that you can understand. From the first page it is intense, heart pumping action. It was like an adrenaline rush that I couldn't come down from. M.R. Merrick takes us back into Chase's world full fo...more

Goodreads description:

Devastated by the loss of his mother, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon in...more

First Thought: EPIC!!

Holy Damn! Out of all the things that I thought would happen in book #2, THAT happened!

What's, "THAT", you ask.....like I'm gonna ruin it.

OK, deep breath.

This book blew my mind, so I'm going to try my damnedest not to ruin it for everyone else. Coming off the death of his mother, Chase is trying harder than ever to control these new elements fighting inside of him. So, to make matters worse, the Council now wants to know EVERYTHING about Chase, his friends, and why he is re...more

As was the case with Merrick’s debut Exiled, the sequel Shift is just as darkly exciting and magical with just a drop of romance (which *cough* I’m hoping for more of in book 3 by the way Matthew *cough*. Yes, yes I like me a side of romance with my paranormal). Unlike with a few other books that I’ve read, this certainly wasn’t snail paced. There’s a lot going on to constantly keep your eyes glued and your attention permanently focused on the story. As you turn the first page you’re thrown righ...more

Shift is the second book in The Protector series and was kindly provided to me by the author M.R. Merrick in exchange for my honest review.

I get quite nervous reading a sequel after loving the first in the series so much but I am so pleased to say that Shift was just as good if not better than Exiled; it’s one of those books that leaves you thinking long after you have finished it.

All I can say is "WOW! Just wow!!"

In Exiled we meet Chase Wi...more

Chase, my favorite demon hunter EVER, is back in the second installment of the Protector series. He’s back and totally freaking blowing my mind with EPICNESS!

Chase suffers a tragic loss at the hand of Riley… his FATHER, at the end of Exiled (you must read it to find out what it is!). He’s learning to cope with his sadness and anger- trying to control his newly discovered elements. Being emotional isn’t so ideal when you have fire and water literally at your command and they are fueled by your em...more

I read Exiled, the first book in MR Merrick’s The Protector Series, and was totally blown away by his writing style and world building talent. As soon as I found out that the 2nd book in the series was coming out I began to leave subtle Twitter hints MR Merrick’s way. When that didn’t work I resorted to begging, which ironically, worked. ;) (Actually, all I really had to do was ask – who knew?) How I got my hands on Shift is beside the point, the important part is that this is one sequel that li...more

If you loved Exiled, you'll absolutely love Shift. This sequel to the action packed adventure Exiled takes you on another journey through dimensions and battling demons. Chase and company try to not only save the universe, but find out the truth about themselves. Merrick's writing has improved a great deal since Exiled, it's phenomenal actually. Not only has he improved his editing by far, and Exiled wasn't that badly done, but his ability to make the characters even more real has grown. The sel...more

Smashtastic Entertainment Quickie: EXPLOSIVE!

Interest in the book: I was totally impressed with the first book, Exiled, in The Protector series by M.R. Merrick, and looked forward to jumping back into Chase’s chaotic life. Or his arms? Either works for me.

World-building: Hot damn, the world-building in this book was Ah to the Some. Shifters are more prominent in this book, and I absolutely loved the drama and action...more

It is no secret that I was positively blown away by M.R. Merrick's debut novel, EXILED. I just couldn't say enough good about it. I have encouraged countless readers to pick it up, and have gotten great feedback from those that have. I won't lie. I was more than excited when the opportunity to review SHIFT came up. When you trust in the ability of an author to bring a fresh, exciting story to life, it's pretty easy to get stoked.

Again, the author M.R. Merrick was able to give more than asked. Action, suspense, unpredictable discovery and many others. After reading the first novel in this series:
(The Protector: Exiled), I immediately fell in love with Chase and Rayna! As in the first book and since it's a sequel, the main character is Chase and I love the fact that it’s a boy. I really enjoyed reading Chase point of view in both books! Less rare these days, but still very interesting and brings a little change!

I actually ended up loving Shift even more than I loved Exiled, which is saying something. It also got five stars, which is also saying something. I really, really loved this one, you guys. It was awesome. There was excellent character growth and the plot actually moved forward, which is more than I can say for some books. Basically it was an excellent second book. I also really like the title because it can be taken literally or…not. And depending on w...more

Almost immediately after finishing the first book Exiled (my review HERE ) I picked up the second book Shift. There were so many questions for the reader at the end of Exiled that I wanted to find out the answers as soon as possible!

The covers for these books are always so gorgeous and have such an amazing layout. Each item on the cover is purposefully placed and give a subtle hint as to what’s to come.

After the events of Exiled, Chase is now fuelled by rare powers with a serious vendetta target...more

As you all know, I loved EXILED. And I mean Loved! The book was pure epicness, and full of so much action. Loved it. You know how when you love a book so much, you are so nervous about book #2 because you want so much for it to be just as good! Well, I tell you what. It was BETTER then book 1. Yes, better!
Shift will take you on the ride of your life, literally. The book includes so much action, and kick-ass-ness that you when you are done you will say one word. "Wow".

My Summary:

Blaming himself for his mother's death, Chase can't bare the idea of losing anyone else he cares about. But everywhere he turns he's putting those very people in danger as he tries to protect the ring given to him by the Goddess. Everyone is after it from his power crazed father to every demon this side of the underworld. Then there's the circle who seems to think it's rightfully theirs. All of this takes a backseat as Chase tries to find a way to keep Rayne from splitting into pieces...more

Wait. Could you just give me like 2 seconds? I can’t catch my breath from all the sheer awesomeness that I just witnessed. Yeah, that’s right, I said witnessed. Because what I just experienced wasn’t just reading. I don’t know how M.R. Merrick does it but he took me on an all-out thrill ride with this one folks. It’s no surprise to you, if you have read his first book Exiled, that we are dealing with an...more

Chase Williams knew the battle was only just beginning. His enemies were waiting in the wings. Developing their strategies. Building their armies. Biding their time.

Enemies who would stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Enemies who needed to be stopped before he was powerless to stop them.

But he wasn’t sure just how ready he was. Or if he’d ever be ready.

He was still reeling from losing the person he cared most for in the world. A loss he thought could have been avoided. And one he blamed sol...more

Oh yeah, still loving this story!! I still cannot believe some of the things that happened in this book! And this won't be a book that you can just read a little bit every day for a while - you will wanna tear through it! There is so much action, especially the second half. It's like a pack of fire-crackers - Bam!Bam!Bam!Bam! Never a dull moment! Oh, and that thing that you keep wishing Chase would GET A CLUE about? Yeah, I think he FINALLY gets it. *wink* Rayna & Chase get to be even more b...more

Another top notch book. Thanks for taking time away from my pregnant wife Matty! This book has officially left me wanting more, and I can't wait until the next one comes out. If you want to continue following Chase and Rayna, you need to pick this up. I read through this in two days! Mind you, I didn't have time for much else, but it grabs you and won't let go. To think, I got the first book on my Kindle because it was 1.99. I would pay way more to see what happens to Chase in the end. Very well...more

Anything I can possibly say would be an understatement. Wow, I absolutely LOVED the 1st book of this series Exiled, this one was a home run! Completely, undoubtedly, unbelievably amazing. So far this is a perfect series. I could not put this book down and I finished it within a 24 hour period. Amazing character development, with a whole range of personal struggles. Atomic bomb of action, riveting edge of your seat plot, complete with twists and turns impossible to see coming. Flawless pace, and...more

Fantastic sequel to a great series! More great action and I will say this again like I did for the first book in the series, Exiled, I just love the way Merrick describes the fighting scenes, surroundings, & characters. He just makes it so easy to imagine this world and the characters he has created. He writes about demons/shifters/vampires in a way I've never read before. I got even more attached to the main & supporting characters in Shift (love them!), especially Willy who is one of m...more

I read Exiled, and absolutely loved it! After reading Shift, I'm a fan for life! Merrick has managed to bring fantasy and paranormal views together seamlessly.

If you loved the action in Exiled, you'll love the action scenes in Shift. Every time Chase and Rayna turn a corner someone is after them. It's that, or Rayna's beast is trying to come to the front. Shift is a little more emotional than Exiled. Chase is trying to deal with losing the person who matter most to him. He's always angry and ca...more

Shift is the second book in The Protector Series and it picks up where Exiled has left off. Man oh man does Chase have it bad. In Exiled he found out some things that just don't add up. While struggling to come to terms with this news he received he is also struggling with his feelings for Rayna. He knows she is a good witch but there are some things that just don't add up. Also to make matters worse he finds out that his father is against him and has put him right in the middle of a supernatura...more

Shift begins right where Exiled left off. And I must admit I LOVE when authors do that.

Caution: Spoilers ahead!

Riley is hungry as ever and still coming after Chase. Chase meets the two Dark Brothers, that have now sided with Riley. Riley and Darius are invading Chase’s dreams and cause him pain that hurts him in the real world when he wakes up. Riley is just about ready to do anything to take his son down.

The Protectors Series really begins to come alive through its sophomore title, SHIFT, as M.R. Merrick's world opens up in new, innovative ways. One of my favorite things to read about is mythology, and Merrick has created his own universe, full of relationships between gods and goddesses, their histories, and the way they can impact the future of all humans. War is upon our characters, and they learn about the mythological roots tying everything together just as we do. SHIFT also digs deeper int...more
