This is the second book in the 'Dead' trilogy and although it's a long book, my attention never flagged. The protagonist Roger Conniston, a Scene of Crime Officer, is doubtful of his abilities in his new role as Senior SOCO. His old adversary Inspector Weston, is still flouting the law he is paid to uphold. There are so many stories cleverly woven together here. Roger's wife is kidnapped by a gang involved in running guns amongst other things. There are flawed good characters, bad ones with some...more

This is the second book in the dead trilogy and it has been a while since I read the first in the series so I was struggling to remember certain details. Steling Elgar does refer to previous events quite a bit so it is necessary to read A Long Time Dead before this one. This book is also longer than its predecessor but at no point does it drag or wander aimlessly through the story. The main protagonist is a Scene Of Crime Officer (SOCO) which is a different enough perspective from the usual poli...more

The second in the 'Dead Trilogy'. It took me a while to re-connect with the characters, but once I had I got back 'into the swing' of the story.
Roger is still a SOCO, although he has been promoted and is now a supervisor. He is trying to uncover the evidence necessary to 'nail' a seriously nasty gang, but is hampered by an incompetent senior Police Officer.
I love the characters and identify with Yvonne and her severe arthritis.
The story picks up pace nicely and gathers momentum towards the clima...more

Great follow up book to 'A Long Time Dead'. Longer than the first in the series and so allowing for more character development. Can't wait to read the final instalment.

Hi everyone,

My name is Andrew Barrett and I live and work in West Yorkshire.

In 1996 I landed a job as a Crime Scene Examiner and so I put aside my love of horror, and the three horror novels I'd written, in favour of crime stories featuring, wait for it... a crime scene examiner - something quite original back then.

A Long Time Dead fell out of my computer sometime around '97, the follow-up, Steali...more

“Some things in life could not be solved or even contemplated by a rational mind. Roger’s mind, however, had ceased being anywhere near rational about half a bottle of Grand Marnier ago.” 2 people liked it
“Oh God, please, I have to, please, just once more; I have to see her again. He marched onwards, his crippled leg dragging behind; his good leg hauling his exhausted body through the kind of pain he didn’t think existed. He reached out, grasped clumps of hope with bloodied hands, and pulled himself onwards.” 2 people liked it
