My, oh my. I noticed this because of the title, and was lucky enough that this was such a lovely story. I will admit, books about online lovers are a favorite genre of mine. Something so delicious about getting to know someone completely based on words, and then seeing if the real life person is as good.

Owen Peters is a senior college student and a member of the rowing team. He sits in six seat, and he has a younger competitor for the spot. Elijah “Asshole”...more

Oh, how I wish this was longer. It was the most adorable thing ever. I love these boys, I want to read more about them :(

The world is a pretty small place according to M.J. O’Shea, as Stroke! shoots holes in the theory that electronic and social media have become the cold and disconnected replacement for interpersonal relationships.

This is the short and so sweet story of two young men competing for a seat on their university’s rowing team. Elijah Lukas is the arrogant sophomore looking to steal Owen Peters’ seat right out from under him. Literally. To say their relationship is antagonist is putting it a bit mildl...more

Too Cute For Words!

Loved it, loved it, loved it!!

Why are more people not reading this little gem? Sara Bell is the reigning queen of short stories but, with this little tale, MJ O'Shea has just become the princess.

Owen is on his college's rowing team. He's a junior and he holds seat six in the boat. The thing is that there's a sophomore who's gunning for Owen's seat. Elijah "Asshole" Lukas.

The one bright thing in Owen's stress filled days is his gaming buddy, Davis. Davis with the soft Southern...more

An adorable story of young love, Stroke! by MJ O’Shea was definitely a delight of a read for me. The story is set at an Oregon college amongst a highly competitive crew team and from the point of view of Owen, a fifth seat on the varsity team very close to losing his seat to an obnoxious, yet (however unfairly) talented JV athlete named Elijah, who seems to be constantly dogging Owen’s steps, waiting for any screwup to take his place. No matter how hard...more

This was just ADORABLE. Owen is in his college Crew team and is struggling to keep from losing his seat to that jerk Elijah Lukas. The guy is a total ass.

The stress of the whole thing sucks, but at least he's been having fun gaming with his online friend Davis. Actually more than fun, he has a huge crush on Davis. Why can't they be closer? They would be great together...

Ok this was just a bit predictable, but who cares?! It was sweet and cute, and I LOVED these boys. I awwwwwed out loud multiple...more

Elijah Lukas wants Owen Peters’ crew seat. Owen isn’t giving it up without a fight, though. The only person Owen can confide in about it is his online friend Davis. When his two worlds collide, will disaster strike for Owen or will all his dreams come true?

Stoke! is a realistic, endearing, and sexy romance. Elijah finds himself in a bind when he regrets his actions and Owen has a shocking realization to face at the same time. Davis and Owen develop a bond that transcends their gaming, but when r...more

I hadn't read M.J. O'Shea until somewhat recently, but she has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I don't think I have rated any of her books below a 4. This short story was so cute, and (view spoiler)[I had to laugh when Davis asked Owen if Asshole was Elijah's real middle name. I was so upset when Owen sent Elijah away, and I'm so glad he changed his mind and decided to give him a chance. Of course I figured out early on what was really happening, but Owen and Elijah were so cute, and...more

The story is standard 'online friends turn out to be the one you know', a plot line that goes back at least to the 1940 movie, "The shop around the corner" with James Stewart (OK, that one is penpal, not online like in "You've got mail" with Tom Hanks).
I like that the execution is nicely done. The setting, rowing club, is interesting. (view spoiler)[I'm happy to see that after what he experienced, Owen didn't accept Elijah right away. (hide spoiler)] I wish it's longer...

A super cute short story about young love and enemies who become lovers! It was easy to immediately recognize the path this story was going to travel, but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment one bit. All of the emotions that were built and that I experienced were spot on for the length and timing of the story. I really enjoyed the big reveal scene, and of course, the kisses:) Definitely recommended for anyone who wants a lighter read that will leave you feeling a little warm and fuzzy!!

This was so adorable!! I mean it was definitely predictable but the whole premise was so sweet! I loved the gaming and the flirting. And then there was the whole rivalry, too. Plus, it had friends-to-lovers and enemies-to-lovers all at the same time. My favorites!!!

I would love for it to have been longer, but I'm perfectly happy with the way it is.

Everything I say about this will probably turn out as spoilers -- even if as readers, you can probably guess what happens :). Let's just say that it's a classic "enemy-turn-lover" and "surprise-identity-of-online-crush" story. Perfect cuteness, just right sweetness, and a whole lotta of lovely things. Oh, and zombies! Except that's only in the game though :p

Another insanely cute short story by MJ - she writes the sweetest, most adorable characters ever and always leaves me with a smile on my face. She does the whole rivals to lovers thing really well, and that's definitely one of my favourite themes ;) While this story was kinda predictable, that really didn't bother me and I still loved it. I just really wish it had been longer!

Very cute! I love the enemies to lovers though this added a bit to the theme and I highly enjoyed it. It sucked to pay 2.99 for 27 pages though, however the book was so adorable that I'll manage not to complain too much.

Some light and fluffy fun. It's a bit far-fetched, but as an isolated piece of fiction, it's adorable. It's not anything really world-shattering - the answer is quite obvious - but still. I rather liked it.

3.5 stars. Good short m/m romance about a guy on his college crew team who's struggling to keep a freshman from taking his varsity spot. The big mystery was pretty obvious from the beginning.

I don' t usually give 5 stars to a short story but this one is so damn sweet it would be a travesty to give it anything less. I loved it.

This is a really sweet story about Owen, a crew member who is close to losing his seat to a younger team mate, and the boy he meets online playing video games. Loved the boys and their story.

This was a nice, short read. It contains some of my favourite romance tropes, e.g. enemies to friends to lovers and mistaken identity.

Love themes like this. The 2 MC's were really cute together and I like that they both like to play video games together <3

So cute!
Owen has an online pal Davis, and a real life enemy Elijah!
Guess how that worked out?
This is a really sweet and fun short!

WOW, the line between hate and love is mighty small. Loved it MJ, you write beautifully, as always!!!

Cute story about a couple of college guys who know and crush on each other through an interactive video game. Elija turns out to be someone else involved with Owen's college rowing team. I loved the game banter/flirting,but wanted more. I also wish this was a full- lenght book.

M.J. O'Shea has been writing romance since algebra class in sixth grade (when most of her stories starred her and Leonardo DiCaprio). When she's not writing, she loves listening to nearly all types of music, painting, reading great authors, and on those elusive sunny days in the Pacific Northwest, she loves driving on the freeway with her windows rolled down and her stereo on high.
