This was interesting from a historical point of view as it was a source for what became the cult of Mary. It is apparently still considered "authentic" by the Eastern Orthodox Church. The story is of the birth and raising of Mary and the subsequent birth of Jesus. The author claims to be James, the step-brother of Jesus. This seems to be false, since the author is not particularly familiar with the customs of the Jews. One obvious flaw is that in the story Mary is raised as a vestal virgin in ...more

Charles Francis Horne (born January 12, 1870 in Jersey City, New Jersey - died September 13, 1942 in Annapolis, Maryland) was an American author of books. He wrote or edited more than one hundred books, mostly multi-volume history works. He was a Professor of English at City College of New York.
