Warning: a kind of girlie bits because well, Eldon is turned into a female by the witch in order to be able to come to Prince's ball and dances with the Prince. So yes, there are female breasts, but don't worry Eldon stays as male in the end :).

I love fairy tales -- yes, I passed my 30th birthday a couple of years ago but I still love fairy tales and happy ever after. Anything with reference or reminders to those fairy tales I know as a kid, I can't avoid them (that is why I am enjoying ABC'...more

Once upon a time there was a boy named Cinder...He lived with his mean old aunt, and his two spoiled cousins. They made him clean for them, cook for them, and even dress them.

But Cinder was not bitter or unhappy, he found joy in the small things. One day at his favorite fishing spot he met a prince. The prince, Xavier was his name, became his friend. Xavier treated Cinder like someone important, and special they talked, laughed and it was the happiest Cinder had ever been. He was in love...But r...more

I was really looking forward to reading this one. I've found myself loving these m/m takes on fairy tales, and usually Marie Sexton is one of my favorite authors. But this book just did not work for me in so many ways.

Biggest: it just seems so wrong in this time when people are fighting so hard for equality--especially in a world where magical solutions to problems are not only possible, but actually happen--that Cinder would have to turn into a woman in order to get his happy ending. And I'm no...more

So just few quick comments. It's a MM (male-male) fairy tale, don't doubt it.
Yes, Cinder (the servant) will have to ask help to a witch, to be a woman and go to a ball... but he is always a man. Even for the quick (true, it's not long) part of the story he is a she, Cinder is always a man. His mind, and his desire for the prince is the same, as before he was bewitched.

It's easy to read, Marie Sexton writing is superb.
It's romantic.
It's a short and cute love story... I certainly recommend it to...more

Wow! I can't wait! Cinderfella, will the shoe fit?

4.5 stars

Finished reading the book and I got an answer to my question about the shoe, but NOT the answer I was expecting!!!

Putain, I LOVE this fairytale!

PS: My fav sentence in the book: "Appropriate is boring." You are Right On The Money, gorgeous!

A very cute, short story. The is an obvious retelling of Cinderella with some twists to make it M/M. Cinder is a nice young orphan whose relatives don't treat him well. Xavier is a rebel as a prince. He doesn't like the special treatment his title gives him and how everyone wants something from him for his title. The two are in a difficult situation when they fall for each other. How does a prince who needs a wife to become heir to the throne stay with the man he loves? Xavier is a smart man to...more

Heavy on fairy tale details, light on characterization

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

PROS:
- In most renditions of Cinderella, the servant is in disguise when the prince meets her/him and the prince doesn’t know Cinderella’s social standing. I like that Xavier knows the truth about Cinder’s status but still pursues a friendship with him.
- The witch (slash fairy godmother) is depicted well. There are some interesting details in the descriptions...more

Remember when you were a kid and your parents used to read fairy tales to put you to sleep at night? I don’t. Because I didn’t really like them. What can I say? I was a weird kid. Besides, I enjoyed playing in the dirt better than listening to silly stories about princes, castles and magic talking mirrors and by the end of the day I was so tired I didn’t go to sleep, I quite literally dropped to sleep.

There was one fairy tale I loved, though: Cinderella (I guess I wasn’t that weird after all)....more

Ooooohhhhhh this is ssssssoooooo sweet and it is a fantastic twist to Cinderfella. Eldon Cinder is treated like a slave by his aunt and 2 cousins, when he meets Prince Xavier in the woods they strike up a friendship and become good friends.

This was really well written and I loved the twist of the cousin being mistaken for the missing girl, ooohhh aaahhh, you know this would make a great Pantomime. This is sweet,...more

I loved this short little take on the cinderella fairtale.

Eldon Cinder was walking through the woods to fish one day when he happens upon a young man playing fetch with his large dog. They quickly become friends even after Eldon realizes that the man is the prince that everyone has been buzzing about.

Xavier is supposed to take a wife before his next birthday or forfeit his rights to be the Crown Prince and the his father's heir to the throne.

Cinder begins to fall for Xavier and he quickly beco...more

Probably not a good idea to read this slap bang in the middle of Ginn Hale's Rifter series. It didn't stand a chance in hell, really. Lol. But I wanted something sweet and light and Cinder certainly ticked those boxes.
The thing is though, I do like a little bit of depth even with the sweet 'n light stuff, and for me, this book really lacked in that department. I feel so much more could have been done to flesh out poor Cinder, to show just why and how the Prince fell in love with him, not the my...more

What a delightful twist on the Cinderella fairy tale. Marie Sexton’s Cinder is the re-telling of that old story, but this time Cinderella is a fella.

Eldon Cinder meets Prince Xavier while fishing. What is the Prince doing fishing, you ask? Trying to avoid the task of finding a wife. In the short time Eldon and Xavier spend together, they bond on so many levels, but in the end Xavier must fulfill his duties to his kingdom, so he has to leave his new friend. But Eldon cannot bear the thought of no...more

A short, sweet M/M take on Cinderella. Eldon Cinder's mother ran off with a knight, and when his parents were killed, he went to live with her twin sister, making him a servant in her home. When the prince comes to town to find a bride (to become heir to the kingdom), Cinder accidentally befriends him. The forest witch casts a spell on him so he may attend the ball as a woman and see Xavier one last time to say goodbye, and he runs off at midnight, taking the prince's heart with him and leaving...more

You know the recipe.

One part orphaned child (A very adorable young man named Cinder)
One part wicked stepmother (Or in this case, aunt)
Two parts nasty stepsisters (This time it's nasty twin cousins)
One cup O' hot and smexy prince(a royal prince named Xavier, not the pop star in purple lace)

Stir that all together with a dash of adorably over-sized puppy, two shakes of magic, lacy slippers and a fairy god-witch!

When you bake that at 350 degrees in an oven for the hour or so it takes to read it, yo...more

I liked the general idea of the book--you should know that I'm secretly a sucker for fairy tales, newly interpreted or original. ;)

One film that is and will always be one of my favourites (at least, when I'm in the mood for something girly and romantic, which, admittedly isn't all that often) is Ever After (A Cinderella Story) with Drew Barrymore.

So, understandably, I was quite curious about this CinderFella story...

It's unfortunately rather short and the plot lacks depth. The story is sweet an...more

Very original remake of the traditional Cinderella fairy tale. I liked both of the Eldon and Xavier and really appreciated the unique fairy godmother twist with the witch and the shoes. I was impressed with how well told the novella was. I didn't feel like it was too short or missing depth. I felt both Xavier and Eldon had distinct personalities that I was able to connect with and I couldn't help but like them both. The author even allowed the two time to get to know each other before the magica...more

I read the Goodreads preview for Cinder and immediately bought the ebook so I could find out what happened. This story sucked me in immediately, and even fighting with my computer for an hour afterwards didn't lessen my desire to get the ebook open and read as soon as was humanly possible.

It's only appropriate to warn that because I absolutely loved this "Cinderella" retelling, this review might be disorganized and/or somewhat incoherent due to my overwhelming joy when thinking about the story....more

Tale! Everybody love tale! Me, myself, considering myself as a Cinderella with the world outside as my evil cousins and one day a good witch will do her/his magic on me. And with that thoughts I endorse myself to face the cruelty of the world XDD (Enuf with the 'curcol')

Cinder is the male version of Cinderella and the story line remains the same with the original tale. Cinder meets the prince, bewitched, go to dance, midnight the spell wore off, Cinder run away, left 'her' shoe and the prince lo...more

I couldn't wait for this book to come out, and yet I was wary about girly bits I knew would appear in it. I wanted a gay Cinderella story with gay HEA, if you get my drift. Did I get it? Oh hell yeah!! And let me tell you this, once I started, I was hooked. Totally gone.

This story was simply adorable. It had everything a Cinderella based story should contain and so much more! There were cruel envious and spoiled cousins (one especially), a bad aunt, a good and helpful witch and of course an orph...more

Um... so I had a long reading-hiatus and ended up with this book on my phone.

What I like:
- Cinder & Xavier's friendship.

What I don't like:
- Cinder's voice is... hm, too bland? Like he has no problems in life and just happens to meet a guy he likes. I'd prefer more angst/tension in his home life, with his family, so that the payoff (HEA with Xavier) feels more satisfying.

Overall a light read, and I personally think it'd be better if they've been friends for much longer. Best friend for age...more

This is a very interesting adaptation of your regular Cinderella story. Because it is an adaptation you know how it will end but what made me like this book great were the twists that made me keep want to keep reading.

The only thing that made me give this book a 3 star rating was the manner in which it was resolved. I guess what you would call the major plot twist. How "magic" was used to get our couple their HEA just did not make me completely happy. Something did not feel completely kosher for...more

This book was a very sweet and imaginative twist on the traditional fairytale, which I enjoyed reading and at the same time wished it could be longer. I will not dwell on the positive features of the story, since these have been very well covered by other reviewers. I would only like to point out an aspect that, in my opinion, undermined the romantic relationship between the protagonists and made it appear less credible.

The friends-to-lovers approach was an inspired choice, giving depth to Eldon...more

It doesn't really work for me for several reasons.

- The author tried hard to put twist on the well-known story that the characters are there merely to fulfil the new story. I didn't care about Eldon or Xavier as much as 'what twist that will come.'
- The parts with Jocelyn are too long that we don't get much of E/X romance.
- The reason of Cinder didn't try to convince Xavier is too weak. As a result, the story feels to drag for no reasoson.

My favorite new interpretation fairy tales are s...more

"Appropriate is boring."

This story was absolutely adorable! The relationship between Eldon and Xavier was super sweet. The sex not at all explicit but perfectly fits with the style of the story. Yes, it is a gay fairy tale inspired by Cinderella and the first half of the story follows the tale that we all already know. But then there's a twist! And I really liked how Xavier worked everything out in the end. See, Milton really was a good tracker after all. So cute!

Yes, Eldon does end up with some...more

Once upon a time, there was a young man named Eldon Cinder who went to live with his Aunt Cecile and her two daughters, Jessalyn and Penelope, after he was orphaned at the tender age of ten. Although Aunt Cecile and Eldon’s cousins were his only family, they didn’t treat him as such. To them, he was nothing more than a mere servant. So Eldon grew up tending to the bidding of the three women but he never complained, not even when every day was the same as the next. Until one morning he went fishi...more

Cinder by Marie Sexton recounts a childhood fairy tale with a twist. Eldon Cinder has the role of the harried young Cinderella, while Xavier is the Prince desperately in search of a bride. The two young men find themselves caught in a dilemma: the Prince must marry or become a pauper.

How Sexton works out the challenges of this story that everyone knows is entertaining. The story has all the elements expected in a Cinderella tale, namely a stepmother and stepsisters, witchery and magic, as well a...more

I thought this was a fun, sweet, enjoyable read. I didn't give it the 5 stars that all of my friends did because I get the niggling suspicion that I've read this story before. Not that it detracted from my enjoyment of the story, but that's why I can't give it 5 stars. I would also say the length is another reason it didn't quite get 5 stars for me. As a full length novel with more development between the characters, I think this could've hit 5 stars easily for me.

Eldon Cinder lives with his ste...more

Marie Sexton lives in Colorado. She’s a fan of just about anything that involves muscular young men piling on top of each other. In particular, she loves the Denver Broncos and enjoys going to the games with her husband. Her imaginary friends often tag along.
